Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya has received a $5,000 donation from Goldman Sachs for his fundraiser, which he hopes will set a new world record for the longest chess marathon.

Onakoya, who is also the founder of Chess in Slums Africa and The Gift of Chess, partnered with U.S. chess master Shawn Martinez in Times Square, New York, aiming to surpass the current record of 56 hours and 9 minutes with a 58-hour chess session.

The fundraiser’s goal is to collect $1 million to provide underprivileged African children with access to basic education. The Gift of Chess announced the significant contribution from Goldman Sachs on social media, stating, “Huge news… We just received $5,000 from Goldman Sachs.”

Onakoya’s efforts have raised over $62,000 so far. His chess matches are live-streamed on platforms like Tittify and Twitch, attracting more than 500 viewers simultaneously. Remarkably, the 29-year-old has remained unbeaten in over 180 games.

Support has poured in from millions of Nigerians, both at home, abroad and in New York City, as they continue to encourage Onakoya’s pursuit. However, the final duration of his record attempt may extend beyond 58 hours due to mandatory 5-minute breaks every hour and a location interruption that necessitated moving his setup.
