Nigerian Govs Hold Closed-Door Meeting Amid Planned Protest

Governors from the 36 states of the federation on Wednesday night gathered in Abuja, the nation’s capital, for a crucial meeting weeks after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local government areas in the country.

Under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), they met at the NGF Secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Those physicially present at the venue are Governors Lawal Dauda (Zamfara), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Alex Otti (Abia).

The governors of Enugu, Peter Mbah and Borno States, Babagana Zulum, sent their deputies to represent them.

The agenda of the meeting was not made public and they did not brief the media after the meeting ended early Thursday.

However, the governors at their last meeting, promised to give Nigerian workers a fair minimum wage, and this was the first public meeting of the forum since President Bola Tinubu approved a N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the country.

As a forum, the governors were expected to deliberate on the planned nationwide protest against bad governance by youths scheduled to hold in August.
