The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency is collaborating with the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) to end open defecation along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

A statement by the LASG Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab on X on Wednesday, said the joint media campaign particularly targets the median from OPIC Plaza to Otedola Bridge.

The initiative, he said aims to enhance public health and environmental sustainability by preventing the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases.

It is also to restore the aesthetic appeal of the vital corridor, known as a gateway to Lagos.

Dr Ajayi emphasised the importance of raising awareness among residents about the health risks associated with open defecation.

He highlighted the dangers of cholera and other waterborne diseases, especially during the rainy season when the risk of water contamination increases significantly.

To ensure the sustainability of the campaign’s impact, Dr Ajayi announced plans to involve relevant stakeholders in monitoring the area for violations.

“We will work with local governments, Environmental Health Officers, market women, and law enforcement agencies to police this environment and report any infractions for legal action,” he explained.
