Elections: How National Peace Committee Was Formed – Bishop Kukah

The committee has been a major player in efforts to ensure that elections in the country are free, fair, and peaceful.

Bishop Kukah also narrated the story of how the National Peace Committee (NPC) was formed in 2014.



The committee has been a major player in efforts to ensure that elections in the country are free, fair, and peaceful.

Since 2014, the NPC, Chaired by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has convinced political parties and contestants in top elections to sign peace accords committing to uphold certain tenets during elections.

“Kofi Annan said he would like a National Peace Committee to be set up in Nigeria to avert the possible violence that would arise from the Nigerian elections.

“I was quite taken aback because I didn’t know how Kofi Annah had known about me. I was then saddled with the responsibility of convening a cross-section of Nigerians with enough reputation to be able to lend their moral voices to ensure that Nigerian elections will be free and fair, and that was how the Peace Committee came about,” Kukah said.

However, Bishop Kukah says the committee’s origins is often mixed up.
