Megan Thee Stallion entered the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards as the top nominee with 12 nods; it was Kendrick Lamar who emerged as the show’s biggest winner, taking home eight awards.

The BET Hip Hop Awards, hosted by Fat Joe, saw the biggest names in hip-hop come together to celebrate the genre’s achievements over the past year.

Megan Thee Stallion, who recently released her self-titled album as an independent artist, was expected to sweep the awards. However, despite her 12 nominations, she left the ceremony empty-handed. Kendrick Lamar, on the other hand, had a stellar night, winning in every category he was nominated for, including Hip Hop Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. His victories were particularly notable given his recent public feud with Drake, who was also a major contender with eight nominations.

The night was filled with performances from some of hip-hop’s finest. 2 Chainz, GloRilla, Juicy J, Bossman Dlow, Trina, and Yung Miami all took to the stage, delivering high-energy sets that had the audience tapping their feet.

One of the most anticipated moments of the night was the presentation of the I AM Hip Hop Award to Travis Scott. Celebrating a decade since his breakthrough album, Days Before Rodeo, Scott was honoured for his significant contributions to hip-hop. His innovative approach to music and performance has left an indelible mark on the industry, making him a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.

In addition to the major awards, several other artists were recognised for their contributions to hip-hop. Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 won Hip Hop Album of the Year, while Sexyy Red was named Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist. 50 Cent took home the Hustler of the Year award, further cementing his status as a hip-hop mogul.

Despite the night’s many triumphs, not all nominees were fortunate. Nigerian artist Burna Boy, who was nominated for Best Live Performer, left the ceremony without any awards. Odumodublvck was also nominated in the Best International Flow category but did not secure a win. Their nominations, however, highlighted the growing influence of African artists in the global hip-hop scene.
