The wife of Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris, has launched the disbursement of ₦100 million in grants to support people with disabilities in the state.

The support, organised by the Ministry for Special Duties, is part of activities marking this year’s International Day of People with Disabilities held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi.

Flagging off the disbursement, Hajiya Zainab urged beneficiaries to use the grants judiciously by investing in businesses to improve their livelihoods.

She further emphasized her husband’s commitment to ensuring every disabled child in the state receives a quality education, regardless of their disability.

The Chairman of the Kebbi State Persons with Disability Rights Commission, Alhaji Anas Malami Gwandu, expressed gratitude to Governor Idris for prioritizing the welfare of persons with disabilities, including the blind, deaf, lepers, and those with paralysis.

He emphasised the importance of education for all children with disabilities and advised beneficiaries to comply with regulations discouraging street begging.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of Abdulhakim Abubakar, a wheelchair user and third-year student of Education Chemistry at Federal University Birnin Kebbi. Abdulhakim, who previously received a motorcycle and an offer of automatic employment as a teacher from the Governor, was celebrated as a symbol of “ability in disability.”
