A man in his 90s is suspected of stabbing to death two elderly residents of a nursing home in Belgium, local mayor Koenraad Degroote said Friday.

Another resident is fighting for their life in hospital after the attack in Dentergem, western Belgium, the municipality chief told AFP.

The victims were all at least 90 years old, he said. The suspected assailant was also a resident and in his 90s, Degroote added.

The local prosecutor’s office confirmed to AFP that an individual had been arrested after two people were killed and that another was in hospital.

The mayor and prosecutor’s office did not give more details but said they were awaiting information from an investigating judge.
