The celebration featured colourful parades by different unions and a renewed call for unity and perseverance among workers

Workers across Niger State gathered in Minna on Thursday to commemorate the 2025 International Workers’ Day, using the event as a platform to demand better welfare, improved working conditions, and urgent pension reforms.

The celebration, which attracted civil servants, union leaders, and government officials, was marked by solidarity marches and speeches highlighting the challenges facing workers and retirees in the state.

Governor Umaru Bago, addressing the gathering, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers across all levels.

Bago specifically assured the crowd that prompt payment of gratuities and clearing of outstanding entitlements owed to pensioners remain a top priority.

“Our government is fully committed to the welfare of civil servants, both active and retired. We understand the sacrifices you make and we are determined to ensure that all outstanding gratuities are cleared without further delay,” Governor Bago said.

He also praised the contributions of the workforce to the development of Niger State, pledging to continue engaging with labour unions to address key issues affecting their members.

In separate remarks, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Niger State called on the government to institutionalize policies that would guarantee consistent and timely payment of pensions.

Speaking on behalf of both labour bodies, the TUC Chairman, Ibrahim Gana —who represented the NLC Chairman, Idris Lafene –  urged the state government to legislate a policy that would make pension payments a first-line charge from the state’s revenue allocation.

“This policy will ensure that retirees receive their entitlements at the same time as serving workers receive their salaries. It is a matter of justice, dignity, and respect for our senior citizens who have served the state diligently,” Gana said.

He also stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration between the government and labour to avoid industrial actions and promote productivity.
