The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said it granted licenses to interested electricity-generating companies to produce 719 megawatts of alternative energy in the first quarter of 2025.
NERC in its Q1 report noted that it issued 55 licences, permits and certifications in 2025/Q1.
The breakdown of the licences, permits and certifications issued includes four off-grid generation licences with a total nameplate capacity of 66.49MW, one new electricity trading licence, four Independent Electricity Distribution Network (IEDN) licences and two licences for embedded generation.
Other licenses issued include 16 captive generation permits with a gross capacity of 952.64MW, seven permits for mini-grids, 13 certifications for Meter Service Providers and eight permits for Meter Asset Providers.
The report also said a total of 187,194 meters were installed in the quarter under review, representing an increase of 0.41% compared to the 186,431meters installed in 2024/Q4.
The new installations increased the net end-user metering rate across all the DisCos by 0.41pp from 46.57% (2024/Q4) to 46.98% (2025/Q1).

During the quarter, 148,713 meters (79.44% of the total installations) were installed under the MAP framework, 36,787 meters were installed under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), 1,074 meters were installed under the DisCo Financed framework, and 620 meters were installed under the Vendor Financed framework.
