Media star Toke Makinwa has opened up about her previous marriage, describing how she overcame public criticism and misunderstandings about her fortitude to leave.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the actress and businesswoman talked about the challenges of navigating a closely watched relationship while juggling personal issues that many people could not comprehend.

“People frequently underestimate survivors, believing their struggles were not serious only because they survived and went on with their lives.”

Instead of finding inspiration in their rehabilitation, she pointed out that society occasionally feels jealous of people who heal fully.

She said, “People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 minutes stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it.”

Toke stated that she eventually decided to leave because her marriage was already in the public eye, adding that she might have stayed longer if the connection had been private.

“The emotional intensity and scrutiny made the situation dangerous for my health.

“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she said.

Despite the difficulty of leaving a poisonous environment, she clarified that choosing to be herself rather than staying there was the only way to save her life and future.
