Countries must phase out fossil fuels at their own pace, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said at the COP30 climate summit on Wednesday, where he had called for a “roadmap” away from oil, gas, and coal just days earlier.
“That’s why we brought up the issue of the roadmap,” he told reporters in Belem.
“Because we need to show society that we want this without imposing anything on anyone, without setting deadlines for each country to decide what it can do within its own time, within its own possibilities.”
