Netflix Announces ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Sequel

With “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” tied for best picture and many acting races too close to call, this Sunday’s Oscars promise to be highly unpredictable.

Streaming giant Netflix announced on Friday it would release a sequel to “Kpop Demon Hunters”, its most popular film of all time and a two-time Oscar nominee.

The animated film, about a K-pop girl group descended from demon slayers, is the latest Korean tale to enjoy global recognition.

“KPOP DEMON HUNTERS will return for a sequel written and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans,” Netflix posted on X.

The film is nominated for two Academy Awards this Sunday: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Its hit track “Golden”, which dominated music charts worldwide, also won Best Song Written for Visual Media, becoming the first K-pop song to win a Grammy.

Korean-Canadian director and writer Maggie Kang, who created the original and will also be in charge of the sequel, previously said that she wanted to “portray Korean culture authentically”.

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said, according to Netflix.

An official release date has, however, not been announced.

Launched in June last year, the film followed the critical success of other works exploring Korean and diasporic experiences, such as “Parasite”, “Squid Game” and “Pachinko”.

The animated musical urban-fantasy film was produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix and became the most-watched original film in Netflix history, accumulating over 500 million views worldwide.

The story follows a world-famous K-pop girl group called HUNTR/X who secretly fight demons. Using music and dance, they protect the Honmoon, a magical barrier that keeps the demon king Gwi-Ma away from humanity.

The group has three members. Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho) is the leader and main singer who hides the secret that she is half-demon. Mira (voiced by May Hong) is the main dancer and a rebellious member of a rich family. Zoey (voiced by Ji-young Yoo) is the Korean-American rapper, lyricist, and youngest member.

Their enemies are the Saja Boys, a demonic boy band sent by Gwi-Ma to steal fans and weaken the Honmoon. Their leader, Jinu (voiced by Ahn Hyo-seop), later forms an unexpected connection with Rumi.

The movie’s soundtrack, created with a score by Marcelo Zarvos, became very popular worldwide. The song Golden, sung by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200.

The soundtrack also made history when four songs, “Golden,” “Your Idol,” “Soda Pop,” and “How It’s Done,” all appeared in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
