The Recording Academy has announced a sweeping set of rule changes and five new award categories ahead of the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 7, 2027.
The updates, which affect artist eligibility, voting procedures and award classifications, are aimed at ensuring the Grammy Awards continue to reflect the evolving global music landscape while broadening recognition for creators across genres and disciplines.
In a statement, the Academy said the changes emerged from its annual review process involving music creators and industry professionals within its membership.
Among the most significant revisions is an update to the Best New Artist category. Artists can now be submitted for consideration up to four times during their careers, up from the previous limit of three.

According to the Academy, the category guidelines have been refined to provide greater clarity around an artist’s impact during the eligibility period while offering more flexibility as career development patterns continue to evolve.
The Academy has also introduced five new categories, bringing the total number of Grammy categories to 100.
One of the additions, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, will recognise recordings in genres such as K-pop, J-pop and C-pop that feature significant use of Asian languages.
In the R&B field, a new category, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, has been created to honour collaborative recordings. Consequently, the existing category has been renamed Best R&B Solo Performance to distinguish solo works from group efforts.
Other new categories include Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, which celebrates recordings rooted in classic pop traditions; Best Traditional Folk Album, which recognises traditional folk projects; and Best Latin Song, a songwriting award for newly written Spanish-language compositions.
The Academy also announced changes to its voting process through a new optional initiative known as Ballot Plus. Under the programme, eligible voting members with verified professional credits may vote in up to 15 peer-related categories, an increase from the current limit of 10.
Members who opt into the programme will be required to submit professional credits for verification before receiving expanded voting access.
Album eligibility requirements have also been revised. Projects will now need to contain at least 66 per cent newly recorded material to qualify for Grammy consideration, down from the previous threshold of 75 per cent.
In another notable change, songwriters and composers of new material on winning albums in most genre categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and achievement certificates, placing them on equal footing with producers and engineers who already receive such recognition.
The Academy said the latest reforms are part of its effort to ensure the Grammy Awards evolve alongside the music industry while recognising a wider range of genres, contributors and creative achievements around the world.
