The running mate of Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 Presidential election, Babagana Kingibe, has preached unity, commitment to democratic principles.

This comes as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the 1993 June 12 election.

Mr. Kingibe noted that Nigeria can discover the true essence of June 12.

.“We redefined Nigeria through the ballot box. It is possible to rediscover the unifying essence of June 12.

He stated this on Tuesday during a Special National Honours Investiture in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He questioned why the principles of democracy cannot be created today as it was about 25 years ago.

“If we could create the values of unity, civility and commitment to democratic principles 25 years ago, why can we not do so today”.

Mr Kingibe joined the Social Democratic Party in 1989, during the conduct of elections for national executive positions in the party.

He was sponsored by the People’s Front faction of SDP as the party’s chairman and was involved in the organization of party’s gubernatorial and presidential primaries in 1991 and 1992 respectively.

However, after the cancellations of presidential elections in 1992 in which Shehu Yaradua was a candidate, Kingibe put himself forward as a presidential candidate.
