Four days after what many described as historic presidential and National Assembly polls, the verdict is in from every part of the country. 

 


Before the exercise, expectations were sky-high in Africa’s most populous nation as millions of citizens elected the country’s next president and lawmakers.

In all, 94 million citizens registered for the election; No fewer than 87.2 million of them have collected their permanent voter cards (PVCs) and were eligible to vote.

08:40 am: Buhari congratulates former Lagos State Governor

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the winner of the just concluded presidential election, Bola Tinubu, saying that he is the best man for the job.

“I congratulate His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said.

05:13 am: Tinubu gives acceptance speech, extends hands to opponents

In his acceptance speech, the former Lagos State Governor described his declaration as “a shining moment” in his life. 

“I am profoundly humbled to serve as the 16th President of our beloved country. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and an affirmation of our democratic existence,” he added.

The former Lagos State Governor and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) thanked all those who participated in the February 25 election with particular mention of ‘Articulated’, ‘Obidients’, ‘Batified’ and ‘Kwankwasiyya’ supporters.

“I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team up together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country and we must build together,” he said.


04:10 am: Tinubu wins!

 

The INEC Chairman and Chief Collation Officer, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, declares APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, the winner of the 2023 presidential election.

He polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who scored 6,984,520.

The next stage is the summary of results by the states, to be followed by the declaration of results.


01:03 am: Imo is the final state.

There are 2,419,922 registered voters in the state, 485,150 of whom are accredited.

There were 477,957 total votes cast, comprising 467,380 valid votes and 10,577 void votes. Polls were cancelled in 194 polling units, affecting 35,542 registered voters with 33,897 PVCs collected.

The reason given for the cancellation is insecurity.


12:43 am: Rivers state is next.

The Niger Delta state has 3,537,190 registered voters and 695,055 accredited voters.

A total of 523,651 votes are valid, whereas 30,293 are void. The total votes cast are 553,944. The number of polling units affected by cancellations is 121 with 55,314 registered voters and 51,763 of them have collected PVCs.

Reasons for cancellation include BVAS malfunction and violence.


12:33 am: Results for Borno State.

The total number of registered voters in the state is 2,513,281 while that of accredited voters stand at 499,543.

Valid votes amount to 465287 and void votes, 32,658, making 497,945 votes cast. Polls were cancelled in 12 polling units with 15,508 voters. PVCs collected in the PUs equal 13,825.

Reasons given for the cancellation are over-voting and BVAS failure.


12:24 am: The collation officer for Benue, Prof. Abdulaziz, takes centre stage for presentation of results.

Registered voters in the state are given as 2,022,374, while accredited voters amount to 521,442.

Total votes cast in the state is 517,818, including 18,460 void votes and 499,358 valid votes.

According to the officer, elections were cancelled in nine polling units under four LGAs with 8,228 registered voters, 7,209 of whom have collected PVCs. The reason given for the cancellation is over-voting


12:22 am: It’s Wednesday, March 1, 2023 and the National Collation Centre is back in session.

The INEC Chairman takes his seat, while the Head of the Commonwealth Observer Mission, Thabo Mbeki, is around with his team. 


10:21 pm: National collation adjourned until 11 pm.


10:11 pm: Presentation of results for Anambra State follows.

The state has 2,656,437 registered voters and 628,590 accredited voters.

The number of valid votes are 613,861, while void votes is 10,751. The total number of votes cast is 624,612.

Elections were cancelled in 45 polling units with 25,368 registered voters and 25,027 PVCs collected.


10:03 pm: Up next is Ebonyi with Prof. Charles Igwe as collation officer.

The number of registered voters is 1,597,646 and accredited voters are 337,887.

09:51 pm: Delta State is next.

Prof. Abraham is the collation officer. The state has 667,149 accredited voters and 3,221,697 registered voters.

A total of 615,341 valid votes were recorded with 39,309 void votes, adding up to 654,650 total votes cast.

Polls were cancelled in 11 wards with 29 polling units and 15,701 registered voters, 13,051 of whom had collected PVCs.


09:43 pm: Results are presented for Cross River.

The state has 1,766,465 registered voters and 444,880 of them were accredited. The results by the leading parties are as follows:

NNPP – 1,644

PDP – 95,425

The number of total votes cast is 441,576, including 416,968 total valid votes and 24,608 void votes.

The collation officer, Prof. Akpofure, notes that cancellation happened in four wards and eight polling units with 3,175 registered voters. Of that number, 2,675 have collected PVCs.

Over-voting was the reason for the cancellation

Governor Samuel Ortom deeply appreciates Benue people across party lines for the peaceful conduct of the February 25, 2023, presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Governor says despite the pre-election apprehensions, voters in the 23 local government areas of the state went out to exercise their civic responsibility and no major breach of peace has been recorded in any part of the state. He commends the resilience of those who were able to vote during the elections despite the current economic situation in the country.

He garnered 80,239 votes to defeat his closet rival Peter Obi of the LP who polled 3,829. The PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar scored 368.

04:25 pm: INEC resumes results collation, apologises for the delay! 

The INEC Chairman says results are coming in 17 states altogether and is expecting more. 

The IPAC Chairman is in the hall and he is raising observations before the INEC Chairman could call the first collation officer.

He asked that the process continues, contrary to the position of the PDP, LP and a few others, who had earlier staged a walkout.

He says the position of IPAC is not because they are happy with the whole development, but because they believe that this process must be concluded. 

The National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Dan Nwanyanwu who is also the presidential candidate of the party is on the same page with the Chairman of IPAC

His views are that the country must not be pulled down because of the hitches experienced. But he notes that there were no problems with the B-VAS.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have demanded a fresh election, saying the February 25 presidential election has been “irretrievably compromised”. LP National, Julius Abure; the PDP chairman, Iyorchia Ayu; as well as their ADC counterpart, Ralph Nwosu, made this known at a joint press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

01:07 pm: [2023 Elections] Obi Records Landslide Victory In Imo

 

The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has won the presidential election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State on Saturday.

According to the result announced by INEC in Imo State, Obi polled 352,904 votes to defeat his closest challengers, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).


01:02 pm: PDP Wins All Three Kaduna Senatorial Seats

PDP candidate and a former Member of the House of Representatives Sunday Katung won the Kaduna South Senatorial District election.

In the Kaduna North Senatorial District,  the PDP candidate,  Khalid Ibrahim-Mustapha emerged as the winner after polling 250,026 votes.

Lawal Usman of the PDP also won the Kaduna Central senatorial seat. He scored a total of 250,066 votes to defeat his closest rival Muhammad Abdullahi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who got  182,035 votes.


12:56 pm: [Elections]: Senate Calls For Calm

The Senate is urging all political actors, leaders, and all Nigerians to remain calm, and law-abiding and allow the process of collation and announcement of the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Upper Chamber made this call at the resumption of legislative proceedings on Tuesday. The appeal by the Upper Chamber follows a point of order by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe on the need for calm and abiding with the rule of law on the election process in the just concluded exercise.


12:30 pm: ADC Reps Member Retains Yagba Federal Constituency Of Kogi State

The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Leke Abejide has won the House of Representatives election in the Yagba federal constituency of Kogi state.

Abejide won in all three local government areas in the federal constituency (Mopamuro, Yagba West and Yagba East) respectively. The results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation officer, Dr. Okpanachi Stephen, on Sunday in Isanlu, headquarters of the Federal Constituency.

“Hon. Abejide polled 23271 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Folorunsho Olafemi who got 10426 votes,” he said.

The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the race, Hon. Tolorunjuwon Faniyi got 6421 votes to come a distant third.

12:06 pm: INEC Adjourns National Collation To 2 pm

The exercise was earlier scheduled for 11 am, but he says only about 5 states are ready, and the Commission wants at least ten states to present their results on the go. The Commission is hoping that more states that are on their way will be at the National Collation Centre before the new time.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called into question the credibility of last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, accusing security personnel, electoral staff, and state governors of undermining the process.

“I’ve not been impressed by the very disappointing outing on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” Falana said during an exclusive interview with Channels Television

“Nigerians’ had been assured they were going to have a credible election – a peaceful election – whereby votes would count. Regrettably, there was a free rein of thuggery; thugs took over in many places. 

“There was a compromise on the part of the security forces. There was a compromise on the part of some INEC chiefs. There was impunity on the part of some governors.”

Senator Adamu Aliero has been declared the winner of the Kebbi Central Senatorial District election at the expense of Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.

Announcing the result in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State capital, the Returning Officer Professor Abbas Yusuf Bazata declared the PDP Senator Adamu Aliero as the winner having scored 126,588 votes against Governor Bagudu the Chairman Progressives Governors’ Forum who scored 92,389 votes.

11:00 am: [2023 Elections] Obi Wins Massively In Abuja, Sweeps Four Area Councils

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has made some massive wins in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, taking four out of the six Area Councils. 

Obi who had been in an early lead since Sunday took Bwari, Kuje, Gwagwalada, and AMAC with a good number of votes. In the final collation, the LP  Candidate polled a total of 281,717 votes beating the APC who polled 90,912 votes.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has won the presidential election in Zamfara State

The APC candidate polled 298,396 followed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 193,978. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) got 4,044 votes while Labour Party (LP) Scored 1,660

The Collation Officer for the Zamfara State Presidential Election Professor Kashim Shehu of the Federal University of Birnin Kebbi while announcing the results early hours of Tuesday in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital noted that APC’s Tinubu won 12 out of 14 Local Government Areas in the state while PDP’s Atiku Abubakar won two.

Professor Shehu declared that votes in 167 polling units were cancelled due to overvoting, insecurity and disruptions by thugs.

Bello Elrufai, the eldest Son of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has won the House of Representatives seat for Kaduna North Federal Constituency

Bello who contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the incumbent member representing the federal constituency, Samaila Suleiman.

10: 02 pm: Governor Ishaku Fails In Senatorial Bid

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku has lost his election bid for Taraba South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

The PDP candidate lost to his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart in the district, David Jimkuta. Channels Television reports that the APC candidate polled 85,415 to defeat Governor who raked in 45,708 votes. The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Michael Magaji came third with 4,133.

08:59 pm: INEC Declares Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency Inconclusive

The Returning Officer for Gummi/Bukkuyum federal legislative seat, Professor Kabiru Abdullahi, has declared the result of the Federal constituency as inconclusive.

The election was contested between the serving member of the Federal House of Representatives Sulaiman Gummi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Ahmad Usman Gummi of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The candidate of the All Progressive Congress scored 13,789 votes, while that of the People’s Democratic Party garnered a total of 12,397 votes for Bukkuyum.

As for Gummi Local government, the All Progressive Congress scored 21,022 votes while the People’s Democratic Party scored 22,413 votes. A total of 4,738 votes were declared as cancelled votes by the presiding officer during the collation.

The results of eight polling units are awaited as fresh elections would be conducted in the polling units to determine the winner.

This warranted the INEC returning officer, Prof. Kabiru Abdullahi not to declare the result; hence there are eight (8) polling units where the election was cancelled due to serious irregularities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is awaiting to announce another date for the re-run election in the eight polling units declared earlier.

Ex-Governor Yarima’s Son Wins Reps Seat

Meanwhile, the son of a former Governor of Zamfara State Ahmad Yarima, Abba has been declared the winner of the Bakura/Maradun Federal constituency of the state.

Abba Yarima polled 55,273 votes to defeat his closest rival from PDP, Ahmed Bakura who got 17,559 to win the Federal legislative seat

20:55 pm:  INEC Declares Yobe South Senatorial Election Inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the senatorial elections held in Yobe South district as inconclusive resulting from the cancellation of votes in unit 003, Manawachi Primary School in Fika Local Government Area of the state.

The INEC Returning Officer for the zone, Professor Saidu Abdulkadir Shettima, explained the decision became necessary for the fact that the total number of votes cast exceeded the number of votes accredited in the polling unit.

According to him, INEC will fix a new date for the rerun where only the affected parties, APC and PDP will participate.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has called for calm in the aftermath of reported violence in some parts of the state following Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

The governor, who commended residents of the state for voting during the exercise, said there is calm in the commercial nerve centre but called for its sustenance.

07:16 pm: Senate Deputy Minority Leader Retains Seat

Senator Shu’aibu Isa Lau has been declared the winner in the just concluded Taraba North Senatorial zone seat. Comprising Jalingo, Lau, Karim- Lamido, Zing, Yorro and Ardo-Kola Federal Constituency.

Declaring the result, the returning officer for Taraba North Senatorial District election, Professor Chibiya Paul DVC Admin, Federal University, Wukari said the candidate returned elected with a total number of seventy-four thousand six hundred and forty-five votes to defeat his opponent Sani Abubakar Danladi who scored sixty-one thousand eight hundred and seventy-eight votes.

The incumbent Senator, Isa Lau is also the present Senate Deputy Minority Leader in the National Assembly.

05: 56 pm: Tinubu’s Campaign DG Lalong Loses Senatorial Bid 

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong who is also the Director General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has lost the bid to clinch the Plateau South Senatorial District slot.

He lost to Rtd AVM Bali Ninkap Napoleon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the National Assembly elections conducted on Saturday.

Ned Nwoko has been declared the winner of the 2023 Delta North senatorial election.

The Returning Officer for the exercise, Dr. Mrs Josephine Anene-Okeakwa declared him the winner on Monday.  Mr Nwoko of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) scored 92,514 votes, to defeat Ken Kanma of the Labour Party (LP), who polled 86,121 votes.

05:07 pm: APC’s Bassey Ends Essien Ayi’s 24-Year Reps Reign

The Deputy Speaker of Cross River House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey has won the Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency election.

He scored a total of 23,885 votes to defeat the Labour Party candidate who had 16,448 votes and the PDP candidate, Hon. Essien Ayi, who got 14, 448 votes.

The Deputy Speaker has ended the 24 years reign of Hon. Essien Ayi in the House of Reps.


04:25 pm: Reps Minority Leader Elumelu Loses Seat To LP’s Ngozi Okolie

Ndudi Elumelu lost his bid for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency to the Labour Party (LP)’s Mr Ngozi Okolie.

Mr Okolie won Saturday’s National Assembly election in the Federal Constituency and was declared the winner by the Returning Officer for the Federal Constituency, Prof Kenneth Abaraibe, at the INEC collation Centre in the Oshimili South Local Government Secretariat, Asaba. 


04:15 pm: Thugs disrupt collation in Jos North

Security operatives’ intervention prevented some thugs from gaining access to Jos North Local Government Secretariat where collation exercise for the presidential, the Senate and the House of Representatives results are ongoing.

The returning officers and all-party agents are still waiting for votes from Naraguta B which is yet to arrive when the thugs descended on the venue.

The timely intervention of reinforced personnel of Operation Safe Haven complimented by the police personnel was able to calm down the situation even as they waited for results from the polling ward.

Mister Titus Zam was an appointee of Governor Samuel Ortom in his first tenure in Benue from 2015 to 2018, where he served as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs before he resigned from the Ortom administration on loyalty grounds.


12: 34 pm: Tinubu Beats Atiku, Obi in Oyo State 

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC), Bola Tinubu, has defeated Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party in Saturday’s presidential election in Oyo State.

According to results announced by the collation officer, Prof. Olusola Babatunde on Monday, Tinubu polled 449,884 to win the state, Atiku polled 182,977, Obi polled 99,110, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party polled 4,095 to come fourth.


2:30 pm: PDP Wins Kaduna North Senatorial Seat

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Khalid Ibrahim-Mustapha as the winner of the Kaduna North Senatorial District election.

Announcing the result on Monday, the INEC Returning Officer for the election, Saleh Ado of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, says the PDP candidate polled a total of 250,026 votes to defeat his closest rival, the incumbent senator, Suleiman Abdu- Kwari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 190,008 votes.

He said that Usman Bawa of NNPP scored 28,511 to come third, while Sidi Ibrahim Bamalli of the Labour Party polled 28,418 votes to clinch the fourth position.

11:53 am: Enugu Gov Ugwuanyi Loses Senate Bid To LP’s Ezea

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has lost his bid to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Ugwuanyi was defeated by Okechukwu Ezea of the Labour Party in the election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday. While Ezea scored 104,948 votes to emerge the winner, Ugwuanyi came second with 46,948 votes.


11:35 am:  LP’s Peter Obi Defeat Bola Tinubu In Lagos State

Obi polled 582,454 votes to trounce the former Lagos State governor who scored 572,606 votes.

Lagos is the base of who was governor of the state from 1999 to 2007. Obi also defeated Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Two persons have died in an attack on the campaign office of a House of Representatives candidate of the NNPP in Kano State.

Police say a group of suspected thugs set the office ablaze with two unidentified persons in a stationary vehicle inside the building burnt to death.

The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi is leading his APC counterpart, Bola Tinubu, with over 1,000 votes in 17 LGAs in Lagos State.

As of 07:30 am on Monday, Obi has polled 448,878 while Tinubu scored 447,187.


07:50 am: Akpabio Wins Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial Election

INEC in the early hours of Monday declared APC’s Senator Godswill Akpabio as the winner of the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial election.

The returning officer for the senatorial district, Professor Anthony Udoh, said the former Minister Niger Delta Affairs satisfied all conditions to be declared the winner, having polled 115,401 valid votes.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, has lost the Nasarawa West senatorial seat to the SDP candidate, Ahmed Wadada.

Adamu could not deliver the APC candidate, Shehu Tukur, to replace him at the red chambers.

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar has won the presidential election in President Muhammadu Buhari’s state, Katsina.

Abubakar secured a total of 489,045 to edge out the All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu who polled 482,283 votes and other candidates.
