The embattled leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah.

The witnesses according to his counsel will give evidence that will support a mitigation of his sentence.

He said the request is in the interest of the Niger Delta community given the implication a full sentence may have with regard to security as shown with the latest threat by a group claiming to be MEND.

The lawyer claimed the said witnesses are indeed willing and able to present a case for mitigation to the court.

A certain Comrade Azizi on behalf of MEND had earlier in the week issued a statement threatening to commence ”nuclear” attacks against Nigeria over the conviction of Mr Okah.

The group also threatened to attack South Africans in Nigeria.

The presiding Judge, Nels Claassen of the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, however insisted that Mr Okah’s Attorney must present evidence or facts to the court on Friday.

Mr Okah faces a life sentence for about 8 of the 13 counts of terrorism for the March and October 2010 bombings in Warri and Abuja in Nigeria.
