NPFL Match Day 2: Enyimba, Nasarawa and Akwa Matches Rescheduled

EnyimbaMatch Day 2 fixtures involving three clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have been rescheduled and will now be played on March 16, 2016.

The fixtures are Akwa United versus Ikorodu United, Enyimba International versus Shooting Stars and FC Ifeanyi Ubah vs Nasarawa United.

Chief Operating Officer of the League Management Company, Salihu Abubakar, explained that the Match Day 2 fixtures have been postponed because the clubs will be involved in continental competitions. Match Day 3 fixtures involving the three clubs will accordingly be played on March 23, 2016.

“The clubs were already not in the Match Day 3 fixtures due to their continental fixtures holding on the weekend of February 26-28 but we have received representations from officials of the three clubs pleading to be allowed to focus on their continental fixtures”, Abubakar explained.

Nasarawa United are already billed to leave for Dakar, Senegal on Tuesday for the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie against AS Academie Demonstration Foot. The first leg ended with the Lafia side in a narrow 2-1 win.

Enyimba International will host Vipers of Uganda in the second leg of the CAF Champions League after losing the first leg 1-0 in Kampala. The match will hold at the Adokie Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Akwa United will also play their second leg tie of the CAF Confederations Cup against Vita Club de Mokanda of Congo.

Abubakar said the adjustment in fixtures will not affect other clubs whose games will be played this Wednesday as previously scheduled.

Match Day 1 of the Nigeria Professional Football League recorded 17 goals, four away victories, three draws and three home wins.

Anambra Govt, UNDP Train Physically Challenged In Akwa

obianoThe Anambra State government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has held a re-training workshop for 30 physically Challenged Persons in Awka and has also provided them with empowerment items for self-reliance.

The workshop, which is on Millennium Development Goals Acceleration Framework, targets empowering an increased number of the physically challenged persons in the state to reduce poverty and unemployment among the less privileged and the physically challenged.

According to the Special Adviser to Anambra State Governor on Donor Agency, Mrs Nneka Onwudiwe, the initiative is in line with the vision of the State Governor, Willie Obiano, to ensure an all encompassing welfare development for every citizen irrespective of status.

For the organisers of the programme, the initiative was to ensure an all encompassing welfare impact on the citizens of the state in line with the vision of the State government.

The UNDP representative revealed that the empowerment would be accompanied with monitoring of the progress of the beneficiaries as well as providing opportunity for soft loans.

The beneficiaries were handed items of empowerment which they pledged to make judicious use of to ensure that their lives and that of their families were made better while living above poverty and beggarly life.

Obiano Flags Off Three Fly Over Bridges In Awka, Anambra State

Willie ObianoThe Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has flagged off the construction of three road-interchange and fly over bridges in the Awka axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The projects were awarded at the cost of 5billion naira with a completion period of one year to be constructed at Amawbia Junction, Kwata Junction and Aroma Junction.

He also performed the ground breaking ceremony for the three arms zone at Greenwood Layout, Isiagu, in the capital territory where the new government house, legislative headquarters and judiciary headquarters among other administrative blocks would be built.

The first road interchange and fly over bridge is located at Amawbia Junction in the capital territory along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The second road interchange and fly over bridge is at Kwata Junction and the Governor urged the people to give the contractors all the necessary support and cooperation to complete the project on record time.

The Governor said that the project was part of the plan to transform Awka into a modern and befitting capital territory such that when the new Awka capital territory master plan is fully implemented, the city would be a reference point in the country and in the world.

The Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area commended the effort of the Governor in his resolve to raise the standard of Awka Capital Territory and he gave assurance of their unflinching support to the present administration and its developmental blueprint.

All the projects flagged off were, according to the Governor, part of his resolve to transform Awka, as well as establish a new face of a functional government in Anambra State.

APGA Appoints Obi As Deputy National Leader

The Chairmen’s forum of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in its first ever National Executive Meeting which held in Awka, Anambra state, endorsed Mr. Peter Obi, the Governor of Anambra state, as its Deputy National Leader.

In the same meeting, chairmen of the party unanimously appointed Dr. Isa Arzuka Jega as the interim National Chairman.

The major objective of the forum was to discuss the process of restructuring and moving the party forward and it had all its 36 chairmen from all states of the federation in attendance.

In a communiqué issued by the forum, the executives of the party commended the leadership role of Anambra state governor, Mr. Peter Obi, and endorsing his position as its Deputy National Leader.

The communiqué also disclosed that the party’s National Convention will be held in Enugu in April.

In Februray 2012, chieftains of the party disassociated themselves from the merger talks with some opposition political parties in the country.

While addressing the chairmen for the first time, Mr. Obi took them down memory lane once again on the principles and ideals of the party, and on how he single-handedly financed the party, fought and won the 2003 governorship election, secured the second mandate 2010 and ensured that APGA is not dead and forgotten.

“My present concern and preoccupation would be to ensure the survival of the party through the conduct of a convention to usher in new party National Executive.” He stated.

Some of the members expressed satisfaction over the new dimension the party is taking.

The forum also resolved to readmit without pre-conditions all former members who express the desire to return to the party as well as grant clemency to all previously sanctioned members of the party.

Ritualists behead a 16 year-old groundnut seller in Anambra

Miss Nwanneka Odah a 16 year-old girl was on Wednesday beheaded by suspected ritual killers at Nawfia Njikoka local government area of Anambra State.

The 16 year-old girl was said to be selling groundnut along Nwafia in Akwa when three young men pretended to buy groundnut from her.

She was beheaded as soon as she bent down to sell to one of them. The suspected ritualist, used the machete to cut her head off.

An Okada man who was around the scene of the killing, rushing to the girl’s rescue, the men ran into the nearby bush.

A relation of the deceased, Mr. Friday Ogalagu described the situation as terrible, lamenting that he had never seen such a thing in his life.

“I was not there when it happened, but I was told that my cousin was stopped by three men who said they wanted to buy groundnuts. While two of them were on the road side, the third, who dressed like a mad man was standing closely.”

Ogalagu said that it was when people began to make inquiries about the parents of the girl that he was contacted.

According to Ogalagu who claimed to have been training the girl since childhood, the girl’s corpse had been deposited at the Amaku General Hospital in Awka, while the parents who live in Ebonyi had been contacted.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Raphael Uzoigwe, confirmed the incident, saying the matter had been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, for investigation.
