Traditional Rulers Join Anambra State’s Economic Diversification Drive

The Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers say they are determined to contribute their quota in efforts to break the bounds of mono-economy and shift focus to a broadly creative, self-generating and diversified economy in the state.

The monarchs are optimistic that the step taken by the Council would enable them meet the varied needs of their various communities and that of the entire state population.

It was a decision made at their fifth annual seminar held at their Secretariat Complex within the Government House in Awka, the Anambra State capital in southeast Nigeria.

The theme of the discourse was “Diversification of the Nigerian Economy; a Sine Qua Non for Sustainable Socio-Economic Stability and Growth”.

Mechanised And Commercial Agriculture

Addressing the assembly, Governor Willie Obiano, represented by his deputy, Nkem Okeke, proposed industrialisation and agriculture, as the solution to the challenges of depreciating currency, dwindling national Gross Domestic Product and the sharp rise in the suffering of Nigerians.

Mr Okeke, who commended the organisers for their choice of the theme, highlighted the efforts of the government in agriculture.

He reiterated the commitment of the government to pursuing mechanised and commercial agriculture, saying that huge investment has been made in establishing industrial farms in over five communities in the state.

In their various remarks, the former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife; as well as the Chairman of the Council and Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, urged the people of the state to develop interest in agriculture and investment.

The Obi of Onitsha further called for conscious effort to be made by all traditional rulers of the 179 communities, to ensure that their subjects key into the vision of the state government in the area of agriculture and industrialisation.

Governor Obiano Commissions BOI Office In Awka

obiano has commissioned a boi office in awkaThe Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, in furtherance to the existing partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI), has commissioned its state office in Awka, Anambra State Capital.

The new bank building is sited along Zik Avenue, Old Road, Awka.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Obiano said the enabling environment in the state presently, in terms of security, road infrastructure and adequate measures and proper policies that help reduce cost of business operation support business growth and development.

While addressing the people, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Rasheed Olaoluwa, recalled how the journey of partnership with Anambra State Government started in 2006 and how it had increasing impact on the people in the areas of wealth and job creation.

He commended Governor Obiano for sustaining and enhancing the partnership through creating adequate enabling environment in the state since assumption of office.

Mr Olaoluwa said that the bank would complement the effort by improving the quality of its service delivery on industrial development in the state.

In response, Governor Willie Obiano said the state was blessed with resourceful, industrious and entrepreneurial characters.

He stressed that the support his administration was providing to Small and Medium Scale Business would ensure that the ingenuity of the Anambra people was brought to the fore.

He added that his administration, since inception, had put in place measures and policies that would help smooth business operation, promising many more to come.

Anambra State First Lady Empowers 200 Physically Challenged

wife of the Anambra state governor, ebele obianoThe wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Ebele Obiano, has distributed prosthetic limbs and empowering items to 200 physically challenged persons in the state.

During the fitting of the limbs at the Women Development Center, Awka, Anambra State capital, Mrs Obiano said the gesture was to enable them earn a better living.

The Governor’s wife sponsored the programme through her pet project, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ).

The first phase of the programme was held in December last year, with 300 physically challenged persons benefiting.

The women in the state appreciated the effort of Mrs Obiano, which they said uplifted the living condition of the physically challenged in the state.

Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, in his remark, commended the state governor for efforts in reviving the hope of the down trodden in the state.

In addition to the artificial limbs, the beneficiaries were also given computers, laptops, and grinding machines among other empowerment items.

Mrs Obiano also asked graduates with disabilities, who finished in the last six years, to submit their personal details to her office through their respective local government chairmen for employment.

According to her, the state government is set to give jobs to 1,000 physically challenged persons.

Obiano Receives Thailand Delegation On Investment Mission

Willie-Obiano-AnambraAnambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, in an investment partnership with the Royal Kingdom of Thailand has declared open a four day Thailand Investment Summit in Awka, the state capital.

A deal towards effective harnessing of abundant resources in the state to create employment in various sectors is expected to be struck, at the summit.

Governor Willie Obiano during the reception of the Thailand delegation noted that the effective security network already in place makes the state a viable and fertile ground for investment.

The delegation from Thailand led by the Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Chudi Okafor, alongside the Thailand Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Chailete Limsomboon, were received at the Governor’s Lodge at Amawbia, where the Governor brainstormed with them to draw a road map towards finding a permanent solution to the challenge of unemployment through wealth creation with natural resources in the state.

From there, the entire entourage moved over to a choice location in Awka where Governor Willie Obiano, declared a four day investment summit open.

In his opening speech, the Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand said that the visit of the Thai delegation was a confirmation that Governor Obiano’s drive to reposition the economy of the state was attracting a global attention which would yield more benefits.

For the Thai Ambassador to Nigeria, the two countries with over 50 years of diplomatic and economic relations have exchanged over one billion dollars and 700 million dollars annually in international trade with Nigeria benefitting more and noted that the summit was a good initiative for deeper business understanding and cooperation among the people of the state and Thailand.

Governor Willie Obiano, declaring the four day summit open said his administration has concrete vision and mission on how to turn the state into an investment destination in the country and observed that a stronger collaboration with Thailand people would help provide a permanent solution to the challenge of unemployment.

The partnership deal was sealed with a presentation of souvenirs to the Thai Ambassador to Nigeria as well as his Nigerian counterpart.

It is a partnership which would not only strengthen business ties but open a greater window of communication between the two countries while providing a structured approach towards attracting more investments to Anambra State.

APC Inaugurates New Exco In Anambra State

apcThe All Progressive Congress (APC) has inaugurated its State and Local executive members in Anambra and Imo States.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Awka the capital of Anambra State, a Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone and leader of the party in the  state, Chris Ngige asked party members to be confident as members of the opposition party who have the mandate of setting the State on the right path, as they go into the election year of 2015.

Senator Ngige took time to prepare the party faithful ahead of the 2015 general elections while also keeping them abreast with national events in the areas of impeachment and terrorism as it concerns the party.

Senator Chris Ngige, who was received by party members in the State House of Assembly and other State executive members, told them that they had converged to ratify the mandate given to their members at Ekwueme Square on May 14 to pilot the affairs of the party at the State level alongside those elected at the local government congresses towards winning elections in the forthcoming 2015 General elections.

Also, in attendance at the ceremony was the  National Auditor of the party, Mr George Muoghalu,who reminded the party members that being in opposition party meant being strong and bold in checking the excesses of the party in power as well as guarding against electoral fraud.

The oath of office was administered to the 35 member State executive body by the Southeast National Vice Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Eneukwu, who outlined his expectations from the newly inaugurated State officers ahead of the 2015 election.

The 20 local government Chairmen of the party were sworn in by the State Chairman, Mr Emeka Ibe, while the remaining local government of Orumba South where there were issues and election not yet concluded would be concluded later.

Other matters raised at the occasion included the issue of terrorism where the party leadership absolved themselves of the accusations supposedly leveled against them by the opposition party.

Senator Ngige,  however,  reacted on the new wave of impeachment affecting more of the APC Governors and said they were uncalled for.
