Burundi’s public security ministry has accused a prominent opposition MP of planning the assassination of President Pierre Nkurunziza and other top officials, in an address on state television.

The authorities announced the arrest of a “commando unit” over the alleged plot to murder the president, his two deputies and the parliament speaker, in the televised statement late Thursday.

The spokesman for the public security ministry, Pierre Nkurikiye, accused Pierre-Celestin Ndikumana, of the Amizero y’Abarundi (Burundians’ Hope) coalition, of being behind the plan.

Three alleged members of the commando unit were paraded on television during the address, including a man who was a domestic worker at Ndukimana’s home for a few months in 2015.

“The details (of the plot) are on this piece of paper written by the criminal you have just seen (the domestic worker) while he was in the car of honourable Pierre-Celestin Ndikumana, who dictated it to him,” said the spokesman.

Nkurikiye said the former domestic worker had confessed to being recruited by Ndikumana to carry out the assassinations, and also confessed to trying to kill a married couple of ruling party lawmakers at the beginning of October.

Parliamentary sources said that a procedure to lift Ndikumana’s immunity would be launched soon, while Nkurikiye said a probe would seek to find others involved in the alleged plot.

Ndikumana told AFP the accusations were a “crude setup aimed at intimidating me and keeping me quiet”.

Burundi has been locked in a crisis since President Pierre Nkurunziza in April 2015 announced he would seek a controversial third term in office, sparking civil unrest that has left 1,200 dead and over 400,000 displaced.

Amizero y’Abarundi, led by former Hutu rebel Agathon Rwasa, is considered the main rival to Nkurunziza’s ruling CnDD-FDD, and local NGOs, as well as the United Nations, have condemned a crackdown on their supporters.

“We live in this country and we know things that have been happening in Rivers State since 2015. The level of violence in that state has been incomparable to any other.

“Yes, there are security challenges all over the country, but you know that some things are peculiar about Rivers State.

So, if a Governor continues to talks about an assassination, perhaps he is using his own standard to judge other people, but if he is accusing the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, he should forget it,” Adesina said.

Governor Wike had earlier raised an alarm of alleged plans to assassinate him in a crowded environment.

The governor alleges that, according to security reports available to him, the said killing is to be blamed on an accidental discharge.

He first raised the alarm during a church service in rivers state on Sunday and repeated the same claim on Monday on Channels Television Breakfast Programme, Sunrise Daily.

“I want to repeat what I said that the Federal Government is plotting to assassinate me, and that assassination will be carried out in a crowd and then it will be seen as if its an accidental discharge,” Wike said on Monday.

Bahrain Sentences Six To Death For ‘Assassination Plot’

Ogun Govt Seeks Legislative Support On Revised Laws

Bahrain’s top military court sentenced six men to death on Monday after convicting them of charges including plotting to assassinate the Gulf state’s armed forces chief, state media reported.

It was the first official mention of any plot against the life of Field Marshal Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, who is a member of the ruling family, but the Bahrain News Agency gave no further details of when or where it was alleged to have taken place.

Tiny but strategic Bahrain has been gripped by unrest for years as its Sunni royal family has resisted demands from its Shiite majority for a constitutional monarchy with an elected prime minister.

A judicial source told AFP that all six of those sentenced to death on Monday were Shiites.

BNA said that one of them was a serving soldier before his arrest and that all six were also stripped of their citizenship.

The court sentenced seven other defendants to seven-year jail terms and deprived them too of their citizenship. Five men were acquitted.

Only 10 of the defendants are in custody, BNA said. The other eight are on the run — either inside Bahrain or in Iran or Iraq.

Since crushing Shiite-led street protests in 2011, Bahraini authorities have cracked down on all dissent, banning both religious and secular opposition parties and jailing hundreds.

Human rights watchdogs say that counter-terrorism legislation has been abused to prosecute many peaceful opposition figures.

The United States has criticised Bahrain for its human rights record but the kingdom holds a strategic position just across the Gulf from Iran and provides the home base for the US Fifth Fleet.

Police Open Investigation Into Assassination Of Benue Governor’s Aide

Tavershima Adyorough

The Benue State Police Command has opened an investigation into the assassination of Mr Tavershima Adyorough, the Principal Special Assistant to Governor Samuel Ortom on Knowledge Economy and Investment.

Mr Adyorough had been shot and killed by gunmen in the early hours of Sunday at his BIPC Nyiman residence in Makurdi, the Benue State capital. His wife was also shot during the attack but she is being treated at a hospital.

While the police have yet to establish the motive for the attack, the killing is believed to be an assassination.

“I have visited the scene also and what I have seen there is nothing more than what you tried to say, assassination for now,” the state Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, told Channels Television.

“We suspect so because nothing was removed and nobody was touched other than his wife who tried to defend him and got shot also.”

In the course of the investigation, the police would be looking to determine the motive for the attack and those behind it.

“Investigation has commenced. We need to know the motive for his death, why would he be killed since it is not robbery, and if it is a robbery, we will also find out,” Makama said.

“We have to identify what motive it is and in this case, it is an intelligence-led investigation.”

The police are also hopeful of piecing together relevant information from an analysis of Adyorough’s phones.

“We are analysing his phones for relevant information for the time being. His daughter was in the house as well in her own room while the mother is still at the intensive care, so she has to talk to us by the time she stabilised. The doctor has also confirmed to me that she is stable,” Makama added.

Meanwhile, Governor Ortom has condemned the killing and called on the police to swiftly investigate the murder and ensure that those responsible for the attack are caught and prosecuted.

His Chief Press Secretary, Mr Terver Akase, said the governor is “deeply saddened” by the incident as Adyorough was one of his most trusted aides – “a man who whenever he was given an assignment did his assignment diligently and selflessly”.

Adyorough is also believed to have anchored the state economic team.
