Ogun Govt. Cavasses For Inclusion In Non-Oil RevenueThe Ogun State government has advocated the need for the Federal Government to enlist the state among the beneficiaries of the non-oil revenue of the nation, giving its huge contribution to the sector.

The State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Bimbo Ashiru, made the request at a town hall meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector in Abeokuta, the state capital.

He noted that the request became imperative as the state had now become the leading mining exploration state in the federation.

He said: “Nigeria produced about 43 million tons of solid minerals in 2016, out of which Ogun state contributed the highest tons among the 36 states and the FCT.

“The figure represents 37.65% of the total tons of solid minerals produced in the country for year 2016.

According to him, this status should qualify the state to benefit from 13% derivation formula accruable from the federation account, noting that diversifying the economy through the development of solid mineral was essential to overcome the challenges associated with the drop in oil revenue.

He further explained that the meeting was to interact with all relevant stakeholders in the sector in order to exchange ideas on the best way to maximize the state’s potentials.

In his speech, the Chairman of Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), Mr Dapo Egbeyemi, commended the state for leveraging on its vast available solid mineral deposits to earn more revenue.

Oshiomhole Drops Abdul Oroh As Commissioner In Edo

Adams Oshiomhole, Edo, Abdul OrohThe Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has relieved Abdul Oroh of his appointment as the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in the southern Nigerian state.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Peter Okhiria, on Monday stated that Oroh’s removal was in the public’s interest and with immediate effect.

The Governor consequently approved the appointment of Mr Kerry Emokpare as the Commissioner-designate for Commerce and Industry in Edo State.

The statement said that Governor Oshiomhole thanked the former Commissioner for his invaluable services to the state and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Mr Oroh had been serving as a commissioner since Governor Oshiomhole’s first tenure in the ministries of agriculture, information, culture and tourism, as well as commerce and industry.

Ogun State MAN Urges CBN To Reduce Interest Rates On Loans

Treasury bills-nigeriaMembers of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, (MAN) in Ogun State, South West Nigeria have appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to urgently compel banks across the country to reduce the 25% interest on loans and overdrafts.

The association made the call in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital during the 6th quarterly meeting of the body with the state government where issues affecting business operatives in the state are addressed to improve the business environment in the state.

This was in the wake of the downward review of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 13% to 11%.

Addressing the gathering, the State Commissioner  for Commerce and Industry, Mr Bimbo Ashiru, appealed to members of the association to support the ongoing effort by states and federal government towards translating the country from importing to exporting dependent economy to stimulate economic recovery and development.

They also asked the state government to urgently address the challenges of basic  infrastructure and security.

Ehingbeti2014: Commissioner Highlights Importance of Power To Tourism

commissioner olusolaThe Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Olusola Oworo has said that power is the main enabler for economic development for any state and Nigeria as a whole.

She disclosed that Lagos State has embarked on three power plants and two others are being worked on at the moment.

In terms of Commerce and Industry, she mentioned that the Lekki Free Trade Zone would be used as a tourism sight but stated that one of the main challenges was power.

She added that investors had been seeking to invest in the resort center but power remained one of the factors affecting the investment because power can only be generated in a limited quantity following the current regulation.

Speaking on Channels Television programme, Business Morning , which held live from the venue of the Lagos Economic Summit tagged ‘Ehingbeti 2014’, the Commissioner revealed plans for the Lekki Free Trade Zone, stating that her industry was putting a 24megawatts plant but would be doing this in two phases, starting with 12megawatt plant which would be powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

She also mentioned that there were key infrastructural projects coming up along the Lekki axis such as the Deep Sea Port, refinery and petrol-chemical plant, proposed international airports.

The Commissioner advocated the need for natural gas to get to the Lekki axis to help in powering these key infrastructure development projects, noting that one of the essence of the summit was to look at how to get natural gas to Lekki.

She also revealed that Lagos State was working on having three enterprise zones because of the SMEs, as Ikorodu, Lekki and Badagry would be provided with power and would be metered.

Ogun To Launch Haulage Stickers To Address Multiple Taxation

Ogun state government is taking steps to eliminate multiple taxation with the launch of state haulage stickers by the state’s Ministry of commerce and industry.

Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Bimbo Ashiru, while launching the stickers at the state secretariat, said the move became necessary in order to stop leakages, corruption and eliminate multiple taxation in the system.

He noted that the stickers will address the trouble of multiple taxation and checks by diverse agencies in the state.

The exercise designed for corporate organizations, associations and individuals is expected to take effect by the first of July.

Ogun Signs MoU With Chinese Company To Build Monorail

The Ogun State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on light rail mass transit with the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) that will link major cities in the state as well as boost its economy.

While signing the MoU in his Oke-Mosan Office in Abeokuta, the state Governor; Mr Ibikunle Amosun said this became necessary in order to reposition the state for economic development and prosperity.

The Governor stated that it was imperative to boost transportation in the state since the state population is projected to rise significantly over the next couple of years.

While signing the MOU in his office, the state governor, Mr Ibikunle Amosun, noted that there could be no development without infrastructure.

“We have been doing our best on roads but it is high time we paid attention to rail as well. We are starting the mass transit within Abeokuta metropolis. This will be extended to all our major towns including the Ado-Odo/Ota axis up to the areas bordering Lagos,” he said.

Amosun noted that it was imperative to boost transportation in the state in anticipation of significant rise in population over the next couple of years.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of China Civil Engineering Construction Company, Mr. Cao Bao Gang, lauded the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration for its vision, pointing out that “the project on completion will enhance the transportation system and contribute to the economic development of the Gateway State.’’

He assured the governor that quality would be the firm’s watchword in the implementation of the contract.

“The project will provide jobs for residents and help the unskilled ones to gain adequate knowledge through training and involvement in the whole process.”

The signing of the MOU was witnessed by government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu.
