Professor Urges Federal Government To Engage Youths Creatively

Professor, Federal government, youths, As part of efforts to address the challenges of unemployment and increasing internal insecurity Nigeria‎ is faced with, Professor Oculi has advised the Federal Government to device ways to creatively engage the nation’s youths.

This was according to a Professor of Political Economy from Uganda, Professor Okello Oculi, while delivering a lecture at the Institute of Security Studies in Abuja.

He said the increasing number of youths engaged in road side hawking are potential tools in the hands of aggrieved politicians.

He therefore opined that engaging them more creatively would enhance productive ventures that would further increase the nation’s wealth.

On the sidelines, Mr Oculi advised the Federal Government to aggressively promote the culture of patronizing ‘made in Nigeria’ goods, as a means of reviving the manufacturing sector and also creating massive employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.

Economic Recession

In the face of the current economic recession, the nation has seen an increase in criminal activities over the last couple of months, as a number of youths in the society, have been engaged in various vices as a means of sustaining themselves.

With various experts, political as well as economic leaders, throwing up various suggestions on how to reflate Nigeria’s economy, the nation hopes to overcome the situation in short while.

nigerian economy

In a conference that recently took place in Abuja, a lack of political will, to develop the manufacturing sector of the economy, was one of the major reasons
pointed out for the recession.

Prior to that, many leaders have continuously harped on the need for the government to explore the manufacturing as well as private sectors.

While some have said that the recession may linger over the next couple of years, if the captains of the economic team fail to re-evaluate Nigeria’s economic policies, the IMF on the other hand, predicts that Nigeria could be out of recession by 2017

This analysis which was contained in the October issue of the World Economic Outlook released by the IMF, gave the government as well as Nigerians a ray of hope while working towards national development.

Namdaz Insists Abuse Of House Rules Prompted Jibrin’s Suspension

Jibrin, Namdaz, Spokesman for the House Of Representatives, Abdulrazak Namdaz, has insisted that the former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, went against the House rules.

He made this position known on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, while justifying Jibrin’s suspension from the House for 180 sitting days.

Addressing the issue, Honourable Namdaz described the decision of the House as fair, saying that the time frame of the decision was not limited.

He explained that the committee had enough time to decide the fate of Jibrin and so were not rushed to do their job, as the embattled lawmaker also did not show up to defend the allegations he made against the House of Reps.

According to him, Abdulmumin Jibrin “made petitions outside the House and it appeared as if he had more confidence in external institutions, which is why he did not approach the House when he felt aggrieved”.

“We have said it repeatedly that we have rules and if you have grievances, you have a right to express them”.

Mr Namdaz explained that Jibrin was given enough time to defend his case and despite being invited to present his case, he did not show up.

He said Jibrin wrote a letter to the chairman of the committee investigating the matter, stating conditions for his appearance, and that until the allegations were made public, he wasn’t appearing before the committee.

The spokesman stated that “the House is not concerned with specific allegations made by Jibrin, rather, it is concerned with the fact that Jibrin made those accusations to outside bodies rather than reporting his grievances to the internal bodies”.

In reaction to this, critics have accused the House of playing the roles of a judge by suspending Jibrin, while ignoring the basic issues which are centered on criminal activities.

The spokesman insisted: “Jibrin only submitted petitions to the EFCC and ICPC, so there has been no basis upon which the House can conduct any investigation against criminal cases.

“Now that he took the case outside, are we going to collect the petitions from the EFCC, to investigate our leaders?”

Reporting Caesar to Caesar

Goerge Eke, Jibrin, NamdazProviding a different perspective, legal practitioner, George Eke said that although the “National Assembly has its own rules as to how members conduct themselves”, the propriety of the case was an issue.

“Jibrin had exposed a number of awkward happenings in the National Assembly, however the concern for them is not on the content of his accusations, rather on the embarrassment this has caused to the image of the House.

“Is there no time when the National Assembly would worry about the allegations made by Jibrin, who said they had fraudulently padded the budget?

“In any case, we don’t expect Jibrin to report the individuals to the National Assembly, as that would be a case of reporting Ceaser to Ceaser,” he added.

Honourable Jibrin on the hand, claims that the decision to suspend him contravenes the law, since there was a case in a court on the issue.

The former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, however awaits hearing of the suit he filed against the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara by a court in Abuja on October 21.

Invasion Of My Office Was To Enable Dogara Destroy Evidence – Jibrin

JibrinEmbattled Kano federal lawmaker, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has alleged that the sealing of his office was part of a plan to enable Speaker Yakubu Dogara destroy evidences of corruption allegations levelled against him.

Jibrin made this allegation in a statement on Friday, in reaction to the decision of the House to seal his office as it started implementing the resolution to suspend Abdulmumin Jibrin for 180 sitting days.

“As you may all be aware, the Sergeant-At-Arm of the National Assembly stormed and sealed my office on the instruction of Speaker Dogara yesterday.

“The office was purportedly sealed as a consequence of my illegal suspension but the truth was to enable the Speaker lay hands (on) and destroy evidence.

“The media witnessed the volumes of 2016 budget documents and 53 files that were carted away from my office and handed to Speaker Dogara. I have exercised extreme caution and refused to touch any document in my office since the crisis started.

“I have raised alarm that Dogara wants to destroy evidence but the good news is that we have more than enough already in case of prosecution.Jibrin Office, Budget Padding

“The whole country watched for two months as Speaker Dogara was accorded all the time he needed to lobby around, clear his desk and now destroy evidence.

“Nigerians must all rise up and demand that Speaker Yakubu Dogara produce all the 2016 budget documents and 53 files carted away from my office,” he said.

The office of the former Chairman of House of Reps Committee on Appropriation within the legislative chambers was on Thursday sealed and the locks changed by officials of the House while other officials took an inventory of items found in the office.

Jibrin was suspended on Wednesday, September 28 for breaching the practices and precedents of the House and was directed to tender a formal apology before his resumption of legislative duties.

Representative Jibrin had accused them of padding the 2016 budget, a claim for which he had submitted some documents he claimed were evidences to four Federal Government’s agencies against the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara and 11 others.

But Jibrin has since described his suspension as inconsequential and part of plans to persecute him for standing against acts of corruption by the leadership of the House and some members.

Vulnerable and Humiliated

In his latest reaction to the sealing of his office, he further lamented: “I was not even allowed to take away my personal belongings.

“Hon Jibrin must be dealt with and disgraced by all means. Speaker Dogara is playing God. I have become vulnerable in the face of frequent threats to my life and some of the security personnel attached to me were suddenly withdrawn.

“Here we are talking about the fight against corruption. Today, I am being humiliated and my crime is simply exposing corruption in high places. Who will want to take such risk in future? I have said repeatedly that this episode is a defining moment for the fight against corruption in Nigeria

“I wish to plead to the general public that we should concentrate on the grievous allegations I have raised rather than unfairly attacking me the messenger.

“The fact that I am raising corruption allegations does not confer on me any immunity from being investigated if allegations are raised against me.

“I have not stopped any of the 359 members of the House from signing corruption petition against me but none has done so because there is nothing!

“Only faceless and discredited individuals and groups are used to divert attention by spreading allegations that all turned out false.”

Day In Court

Meanwhile, a court in Abuja will on October 21 hear a suit filed by the former
chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee, Mr Abdulmumin Jibrin, against the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara.Abdulmumuni-Jibrin-and-Yakubu-Dogara

Mr Jibrin had filed a suit against Mr Dogara after the House passed a resolution, barring him from being part of 180 sitting days.

He claims that the decision to suspend him contravenes the law, since there was a case in a court on the issue.

The suspension was issues on Wednesday after the lawmaker failed to appear before the House Ethics Committee to defend allegations he made against Dogara and some other principle officers of the House.
