As the 2010s winds to a close streaming titan Spotify announced Tuesday that poppy rap sensation Drake is the most globally streamed artist of the decade with more than 28 billion streams.

British crooner Ed Sheeran, hip hop warbler Post Malone, pop royalty Ariana Grande and rap iconoclast Eminem rounded out the top five most-streamed artists between 2010 and 2019, Spotify said.

Global hit machine Sheeran’s “Shape of You” won the top spot for the most streamed track of the decade with more than 2.3 billion streams, according to the data on more than 248 million worldwide users’ listening habits.

Post Malone was 2019’s most-streamed artist with more than 6.5 billion, followed by Billie Eilish, whose haunting pop sound saw her win more than 6 billion streams.

Grande, Sheeran, and Latin trap innovator Bad Bunny formed the rest of the most-streamed class of artists of 2019.

“Senorita,” the sultry pop duet from real-life couple Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, was 2019’s most-streamed song, with more than one billion streams, closely trailed by Eilish’s smash “bad guy” that got more than 990 million streams.

Created in 2006, Spotify by 2010 was but a young start-up with less than a million paying subscribers — contrary to today’s 113 million.

The company’s rise to power — today counting 248 million monthly users, including paying and non-paying members — largely came on streaming’s growing dominance in the industry.

Fellow streaming giant YouTube has not published its top streamed videos of the decade — its top-viewed video remains the lilting Latin juggernaut “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee, with over 6.5 billion.

Ed Sheeran Marries Girlfriend In ‘Tiny Wedding’ – Report

Source: Ed-sheeran Instagram.

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has married his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in a “tiny winter wedding”, The Sun newspaper reported on Thursday.

“Ed got married a few days before Christmas. It was very quiet – just Ed’s oldest school pals, limited family and the priest,” an unnamed source told the tabloid.

The 28-year-old, one of the best-selling artists in the world, has known Seaborn since his childhood in Suffolk, eastern England.

They have reportedly been dating since 2015.

The Sun reported that there were only about 40 people at the ceremony at his estate in Suffolk.

“He wanted no fuss and he wanted it to be something entirely for them — a tiny winter wedding,” the source said.

However, the couple are said to be planning a “festival-style party” in the summer.

Sheeran announced his engagement on Instagram in January 2018, saying: “We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well.”

Sheeran’s record label did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

British folk-pop phenomenon Ed Sheeran on Monday was named the best-selling artist in the world in 2017 by the global recorded music industry group IFPI.

Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) was the best-selling album of last year and “Shape of You” was the best-selling single, London-based IFPI said in its announcement.

Sheeran is the fifth recipient of the Global Recording Artist of the Year Award after One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014), Adele (2015) and Drake (2016).

“The success Ed has achieved is astonishing and testament to his ability to write and perform songs that connect with a truly global fanbase,” IFPI chief executive Frances Moore said in a statement.

Drake came second in the ranking, followed by Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park and The Chainsmokers.

The ranking includes digital and physical album and single sales, as well as audio streaming.

Max Lousada, chief executive of Warner Music UK, said Sheeran’s “ability to tell stories and make people feel is what stands him out from the crowd”.

Sheeran lost out to grime star Stormzy at the Brit Awards in London last week but earlier this month took Best Pop Solo performance at the Grammies in New York for “Shape of You”.

Although Absent, Ed Sheeran Wins Two Pop Grammy Awards

English pop songwriter Ed Sheeran, one of the most successful artists of the past year, on Sunday won his third and fourth Grammys — both outside the major categories.

Sheeran won Best Pop Vocal Album for “Divide” and Best Pop Solo Performance for the album’s single “Shape of You,” a minimalist dance number about finding love in a bar.

He beat out fellow chart-toppers including pop superstar Lady Gaga, who was in the running for both awards.

Sheeran, 26, had been a favourite leading up to the nominations for the Grammys in light of his past recognition at the awards and his awesome commercial success, including his status as last year’s most streamed artist on Spotify.

But in a surprise seen as reflecting shifts in US pop culture, hip-hop for the first time dominated the major nominations, and Sheeran was left in the cold.

“Divide” generated a series of major hits for Sheeran including “Shape of You,” the rockier “Castle on the Hill” and the romantic ballad “Perfect.”

Sheeran was not present to pick up the awards.

Ed Sheeran Announces Engagement

Ed Sheeran has become engaged to his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, the British singer-songwriter announced Saturday.

“Got myself a fiance just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well,” he told his 18 million followers on Instagram.

Sheeran, 26, is one of the best-selling artists in the world and his latest album “Divide” smashed Spotify records, drawing 57 million listens on the first day of its release — nearly twice the previous highest.

Sheeran and Seaborn, who are childhood friends, have reportedly been dating since 2015.

“It’s awesome meeting famous people. But that’s not life. That’s not reality. One day this will end,” he told The Sunday Times newspaper last year.

“And I know the one person that’s going to remain constant is Cherry.”

After several years of playing on the street and in bars, Sheeran won breakthrough international success with his 2014 love ballad “Thinking Out Loud”.

Ed Sheeran’s latest best-selling album is up against four debut offerings at this year’s Brit Awards, including one by breakthrough pop star Dua Lipa, who also dominated Saturday’s nominations.

Singer-songwriter Sheeran, whose “Divide” was the fastest-selling album ever for a male solo artist in Britain, is nominated in the best solo artist and best album categories for the February 21 awards.

Meanwhile, Dua Lipa, 22, has five nominations including best British female solo artist, where she will battle it out against 2015 winner Paloma Faith, rapper-poet Kate Tempest, Jessie Ware and Laura Marling.

Dua Lipa is also among four artists whose first full-length studio albums have been nominated. Grime star Stormzy, singer Rag’N’Bone Man and rapper J Hus join her and Sheeran for the best album prize.

In the solo male category, Sheeran faces former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, Stormzy, London rapper Loyle Carner and Rag’N’Bone Man.

The best British band nominees are Gorillaz, London Grammar, Royal Blood, Wolf Alice and The xx.

Singer-songwriter Sampha, who won the Mercury Prize last year, competes with Dua Lipa and rappers J Hus, Loyle Carner and Dave in the British breakthrough act category.

In the international categories, Foo Fighters, Haim, The Killers, LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire are up for best group.

Taylor Swift, Lorde, Bjork, Pink and Alicia Keys are up for best international female, while Childish Gambino, Beck, DJ Khaled, Drake and Kendrick Lamar are up for best international male.

The Brit Awards were last year dominated by David Bowie, who won two posthumous awards for best solo artist and best album for “Blackstar”.

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape Of You’ Most Streamed Ever On Spotify

Ed Sheeran’s dance pop track “Shape of You” has become the most played song ever on Spotify, ending the 11-month reign of Drake’s “One Dance.”

The English songwriter’s easy-going song about looking for love at a bar has been heard 1.318 billion times on the world’s most popular streaming service as of Friday, a notch above “One Dance.”

“Shape of You” came out in January as one of the first songs on Sheeran’s chart-topping album “Divide.”

The album was the first by the ginger-haired guitarist since he was propelled to stardom by the ballad “Thinking Out Loud,” which remains Spotify’s sixth most streamed track ever.

“Shape of You” and “One Dance” share subtle similarities both incorporate the rhythms of dancehall, the Jamaican club music of the 1970s that has seen a revival through pop producers.

Sheeran brings in drum machine off-beats of dancehall underneath a minimalist, minor-key synthesized melody.

The dancehall influence is more obvious in “One Dance” as Drake, who came to prominence as a rapper, sings in a Jamaican patois and incorporates Afrobeat, with an appearance by Nigerian pop singer WizKid.

“One Dance” rose to the top of Spotify’s all-time list in October 2016 — despite Drake’s close association with rival streaming service Apple Music.

Two months later, “One Dance” became the first song to hit one billion streams on Spotify, a feat since matched by three other tracks.

U2, Ed Sheeran Cancel Concerts In Protest- Hit St Louis

ST LOUIS, MO – SEPTEMBER 16: Police arrest a demonstrator protesting the acquittal of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley on September 16, 2017 in St. Louis,Scott Olson/Getty Images/AFP

Rock giants U2 and pop star Ed Sheeran have called off concerts in St Louis, as the US city braced Sunday for a second day of protests over the acquittal of a former police officer in the shooting death of a black man.

The Irish rock band and entertainment firm Live Nation announced the Saturday show’s cancellation in a statement citing concerns about fans’ security.

“We have been informed by the St Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size,” they said.

“We cannot in good conscience risk our fans’ safety by proceeding with tonight’s concert. As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment.”

And Briton Sheeran announced he was pulling the plug on his show, set for a different St Louis venue Sunday, amid the protests.

A judge in the Missouri city Friday found a white former police officer, Jason Stockley, not guilty of murdering Anthony Lamar Smith, a suspected drug dealer, following a high-speed chase in 2011.

The case has drawn a lot of attention in St Louis, where racial tensions have been high since the 2014 killing of a black man in the city’s suburb of Ferguson by a white police officer.

Hundreds of people turned out for initially peaceful protests after the verdict, but the situation turned violent Friday night, leading police to break up the crowd with tear gas.

Ten officers were injured in the standoff with rock-throwing protesters, according to St. Louis police who made at least 23 arrests.

On Saturday, protesters gathered at a park and then marched through two St Louis shopping malls, chanting “the whole damn system is guilty as hell.”

“I can feel for and I understand what the family is going through, and I know everyone wants someone to blame, but I’m just not the guy,” Stockley told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Stockley, 36, shot Smith, 24, five times December 20, 2011 after a car chase that followed a suspected drug deal.

He was caught on an in-car camera video telling his partner, Brian Bianchi, “Going to kill this (expletive) don’t you know it.

Prosecutors brought first degree murder charges in 2016, alleging that Stockley’s comments to his partner showed premeditation and alleging he planted a gun in Smith’s car after the shooting.

On Friday, Judge Timothy Wilson acquitted Stockley, concluding there was no evidence he had planted the gun and that his video-taped comment lacked context because the portions before and after were inaudible.

Ed Sheeran Deletes Twitter Account After ‘Game Of Thrones’ Backlash

Music star Ed Sheeran deleted his Twitter account on Monday, a day after his cameo the new series of ‘Game of Thrones’ was derided by some on the social media platform.

Sheeran had a small role in the highly anticipated opening episode of the sex-and-swords series, playing a singing soldier singing who encounters Arya Stark, one of the programme’s central characters.

Sheeran’s appearance was branded “absolutely terrible”, by user @george_mckillop, while @gothita said that it had “ruined my life”.

Even business magazine Forbes published an online article saying that his appearance was “a mistake”.

The singer, whose “Divide” album topped the charts in the United States earlier in July, has been vocal about his dislike for the platform recently, telling Britain’s Sun newspaper that it was “nothing but people saying mean things”.
