The Leadership of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has launched an investigation into the killing of Senatorial candidate of the Action Alliance in Imo North senatorial district Ndubuisi Emenike.
Mr Ndubisi was killed by an NSCDC official attached to the VIP during the victory party held for Miriam Onuoha winner of the just concluded Okigwe North Federal Constituency election.
Briefing newsmen in Owerri the Imo state capital, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) Abdullahi Mohamadu who spoke through the Imo state commandant Raji Ibrahim described the incident as a very unfortunate one.
He said the agency has commenced a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the true course of the action.
The Commandant General further noted that the NSCDC does not accept accidental discharge as a genuine reason for killing anyone, adding that even though it was reported that the NSCDC official was clearing the road when his rifle was hit by another person and the bullet went out to hit Emenike, it still does not stop a full investigation and due punishment if found culpable.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased and indigenes of Imo state, the State Commandant said a query has already been issued to the officer even while in detention.
According to the returning officer, some gunmen gained access into the collation centre and carted away with all the electoral materials, including all the ballot papers and result sheets.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) candidate in the Imo North Senatorial District, Ndubuisi Emenike, has been killed.
Emenike was said to have been shot dead by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Sunday.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Imo, Orlando Ikeokwu, told reporters that the politician was killed during a celebration party held in honour of the winner of the Okigwe North Federal Constituency supplementary election, Miriam Onuoha.
Onuoha contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun, has distributed about 150 laptops and printers to people of his constituency in Osogbo.
The items are for those who graduated from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training programme, to help enhance their skills in ICT.
He affirmed that without productive engagement of about 45million Nigerians, the country’s economy will remain stagnant .
The programme tagged: “ICT Training Programme on Desktop Publishing, National Information Technology and Development Agency”, was held for youths of Olorunda, Osogbo and Orolu Federal Constituency.
According to the lawmaker, “Development of any nation largely predicates on the level of growth in its ICT.
“With nature of composition of the Nigerian nation-state, which is heterogeneous in content, more Nigerians need to acquire more skills and be productively engaged.
“Development encompasses growth in ICT, we need a knowledge based society to make our economy strong and viably sustainable.
“An individual who is educated with skills has the hope of a better future, and at the long run contributes immensely to the economy.
“I put up the programme to make every participant create an independent national economy, not in theory but in practical.
“By the scientific education acquired through the training, they would be able to contribute successfully to the construction of an independent national economy by the shortest possible route.
“With acquisition of this knowledge, I believe this has opened the way for the development of our national economy and set as the central task, the preparation of material and technical conditions to equip all sectors of the people’s economy with modern techniques.
“Knowledge is what is lacking in Nigeria, that makes life so difficult for many Nigerians, and you know, acquisition of knowledge is not limited to the four walls of classroom, you learn squarely”, Hon. Yusuf said.
The lawmaker who described ICT knowledge in any given society as inevitable, argued that any society that lacks it would be in perpetual retrogression in terms of self-reliance.
The Deputy Speaker, however, charged all and sundry not to regard learning of computer as something mysterious but master it to transform their immediate environments.
He stated that everyone must be brought up to be computer literate so they could become wizards and grow into invincible revolutionaries to overcome every difficulty and break through every bottleneck, fearing nothing technologically.
The lawmaker, therefore, charged youths in the country to be dynamic and computer literate, to be able to fit in to the current technological world of rapid development.
The Nasarawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has flagged off its campaign for Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency bye election.
This is following the demise of the lawmaker representing the area who was a member of the party.
The party also presented to its members the flag bearer, Jaafaru Mohammed, who emerged victorious in the just concluded primary elections.
During the flagging off and presentation in Nasarawa Local Government Area, the Deputy Governor, Mr Silas Agara, expressed optimism that the party would win the bye election scheduled to hold on Saturday, May 28.
The Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not support any candidate who will not embark on meaningful programmes that would improve the lives of the people.
The Governor made the statement while launching the second phase of the Strategic Constituency Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation Programme initiated by the House member representing Bursari, Geidam and Yunusari Federal Constituency, Bukar Goni.
While urging others to emulate the initiator of the programme, Gaidam said: “The electorates who brought us to these offices must not be neglected as they are responsible for the current offices we are presently holding and we must reciprocate this gesture with meaningful projects that will improve their lives.
“Most of the political office holders are busy enjoying themselves in Abuja and other major cities, forgetting the electorates who brought them to power, and the APC will not tolerate that,” Gaidam said.
He appreciated the efforts of the initiator who he said “have complemented the efforts of his administration in reducing youth unemployment and restiveness in the state.”
The governor also urged the recently sworn in Local Government chairmen in the state to provide water to all communities in their areas, stressing that they should as a matter of concern attend to the education needs of their people.
He revealed that 36,000 university graduates in the state were employed by his administration while 6,572 diploma holders had also been placed on monthly allowances all with the aim of reducing joblessness among the youths.
The initiator of the programme, Bukar Goni, said that Geidam Local Government Area would be allocated 22 tricycles; while Bursari and Yunusari would be allocated 20 each. Geidam was allocated 33 motorcycles while Bursari and Yunusari would get 30 each. He called on the youths to make the best use of the programme in improving their well-being.
The latest provision of the tricycles and motorcycles to youth of his constituency by the lawmaker was the second in six months.
