Don’t Be Distracted By 'Partisan Leaders', APC Tells Buhari, NASS

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly not to be distracted by those it described as partisan leaders in the country.

It made the call on Wednesday in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in reaction to the outrage sparked by the murder of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti.

The party, however, condoled with the nonagenarian over the loss of his daughter who was killed by gunmen last week in Ondo State.

According to the statement, it said losing a loved one is never easy to come to terms with, particularly in such unfortunate circumstance.

“We join the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and all peace-loving Nigerians in extending condolences to the family of the late Funke Olakunrin on the sad and painful loss,” the APC said.

Olakunrin’s murder has been widely condemned by prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo who wrote an open letter to the President, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which called for a state of emergency on security.

In its reaction, the APC said it “is disturbed by recent reckless and provocative statements ascribed to some leaders and interests in the country.”

“Inciting actions and rhetorics are counterproductive and dangerous particularly in a multi-ethnic country such as ours.

“Terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, and other crimes must be condemned by all. There is nothing like an Isoko, Gwari or Awori robber because criminality has no tribe in the eyes of the law.

“We must remind ourselves that many of the recorded genocides all over the world started through unchecked prejudices and systematic profiling of racial, political and cultural groups. God forbid our dear country descends into such savagery,” the ruling party said.

According to the statement, the party condemns the notion of a Nigeria where any ethnic group is unwelcome in any part of the country.

It insisted that every Nigerian must be free to live and work in safety anywhere in the country, while the leaders have an important duty to be temperate in their language and actions.

The APC asked Nigerians to be wary of partisan individuals, saying many of them formerly occupied elective positions but failed to tackle many of the criminalities in the country.

“We must be wary of these leaders who now play to the gallery to incite, spread hate and intolerance in the country. Their interventions are not patriotic but in pursuance of their political and selfish interests.

“The APC urges the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the National Assembly, our religious, traditional, political leaders and indeed all well-meaning Nigerians not to be distracted by these unpatriotic antics,” it said.

The party added, “We may not agree on some issues in our national life, but we must continue to explore all peaceful and legitimate avenues to tackle our challenges and find amicable common ground to our disputation.

“Finally, we also call on relevant security agencies to intensify ongoing effort to rid the country of crime, particularly the violent type.”

Olakunrin’s Murder: Killing Of Innocent Nigerians Is Terrorism, Says Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the murder of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere’s National Leader, Reuben Fasoranti.

Jonathan, during a condolence visit to Fasoranti at his Ondo State residence on Tuesday, said Olakunrin’s death was painful and an act of terrorism.

He described the killing of innocent Nigerians as an act of terrorism, noted that the rate was becoming worrisome.

“Every generation of human being faces problems and that generation must find ways of solving that problem,” the former president said.

He added, “Every government faces some unique problems. Insecurity has been with us immediately after the civil war.

“That was the first time we experienced armed robbery in Lagos. From armed robbery, it graduated to kidnapping.”

The former president called for the setting up of a separate government agency that will handle the security challenges facing Nigeria.

He traced the history of criminal activities in Nigeria, saying, “The first major kidnapping was described as commercial kidnapping because some money exchanged hands. This happened in 2006 when I was governor of Bayelsa State.

“From commercial kidnapping, it moved to terrorism in the North and now some kind of terrorist attacks are all over the country when people will just come out of the road and spray bullets on innocent people. That is a terrorist attack.

“You have no reason to attack somebody you don’t even know, that is terrorism.”

According to him, every generation and government usually face various challenges which would need to be tackled with diverse approaches.

He called for collaboration between the Federal and the state governments to address the incessant killings in the country.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has condemned the recent killings across the country, saying it’s time for the government to rise up to its responsibilities and bring an end to insecurity.

The monarch who spoke to Channels Television on the sideline of an event in Omuo Ekiti on Sunday also objected to some claims that the security situation in the country is exaggerated.

He stressed the need to halt the ugly trend, insisting that the Yoruba people will strongly protect their territory and flush out “external aggressors”.

“We in Yoruba land, we are prepared to defend our environment and send away all the bad residents. We call them men of the underworld because in the past they like to operate in the night but now they even come out during the day,” he said.

“Enough is enough, we’ll come together, make ourselves one, and protect our territory very well, I repeat, very very well.”

In the same tone, a member of the House of Representatives Femi Bamisile, who hosted some stakeholders at the event said: “For us, we are going to secure our own territory without a doubt. We must start from home before we start going out.

Another Federal lawmaker, Shina Abiola-Peller believes vigilante groups will help out in the naughty security situation.

“I believe we need the vigilante as a primary source of information for our security system, and I’ll propose a bill towards that effect. We need a database for vigilante in the 8,692 wards in Nigeria.

“They are locals and they know the terrain more,” he said.

It said, “ARG shares in this colossal loss and condole with the bereaved family, especially Pa Fasoranti and Mrs Olakunrin’s nucleus family.

“This loss is a burden too heavy and a steep price to pay for steadfastly serving this nation and our people.”

The group blamed the death on “savage herdsmen” and warned that whatever the plot they have against Yorubaland, “it will consume the perpetrators and their collaborators”.

It challenged the governors in the south-west and the socio-political leadership to rise up in defence of the people in the region.

ARG said, “It would now seem that the central government and its clinging to central policing has failed woefully in providing Nigerians the needed security.

“Our governors must realise that they shall be held responsible, individually and collectively, should they fail to prioritise and support one another in securing their people. The time to act is now.”

The group described Mrs Olakunrin as the latest victim of what it called the nation’s wobbling and ineffective unitary governance structure.

It, therefore, demanded that the issues of kidnap, rape, and killing that “emanate daily from Yoruba land” be stopped by whatever mean possible.

ARG asked that the ‘Unitary Constitution’ be replaced with a truly Federal Constitution and called on the south-west governors to rise to the challenge.

“They can count on the support of our people in their bid to drive out these senseless criminals from our land,” it said.

The group explained that this would ensure that Mrs Olakunrin and all others killed by suspected herdsmen do not die in vain.
