Johnny Is An Experience About A Guy That Left Me – Yemi Alade

Yemi AladeNigerian pop music sensation, Yemi Alade, believes that the success of her hit single, ‘Johnny’ should not be traced to having done anything special asides pouring out her heart in the song.

Appearing as Ebuka’s guest on Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television, she recalled the fact that since her debut, all the songs she had released have never been the same style, and Johnny was just another one of such tracks off her nature as a “music chameleon”.

In a religious tone, she aligned with her pastor, “do not for once think that it’s the work that you’re putting in that is making you as big as you are; it’s God’s gift.

“God chooses the time he wants to visit and I think God just decided to visit me as at the time I was releasing Johnny”, she said.

She said that the song was a product of her personal experience in the hands of a particular Johnny whose list of girls was longer than what the song could accommodate.

Ebuka, as usual, would not let Yemi off without a question about her relationship with men, but Miss Alade begged to keep her personal life out of the media. Attempts to make her open up were smartly beaten by her and on her relationship with actor, Alex Ekubo, she said, “Alex played the role of Johnny in my video; he’s an outstanding young guy and we are cool.”

Her response to stories making the rounds that she and Alex Ekubo attended the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards together as a couple in order to start a rumour to push their careers; “This is the first time I’m hearing that but we are friends and we just decided why don’t we go out together and we went out together. It’s no biggie.”

Yemi also shared her views about the Nigerian entertainment industry and the criticism that there were no genres anymore with everybody sounding alike. She admitted that indeed Nigerian artistes were beginning to sound the same way but this might just mean that Nigerian music was beginning to have its own sound and identity.

The pretty songstress referred to her music as Afropolitan, coined by her to describe the variation of the popular Afropop, Afro-hiphop, and other names by which Nigerian music has been described; all of which she said were inspired by the global recognition Fela’s Afrobeat got.

While saying that the success of the hit song ‘Johnny’ gives her the confidence that it is her turn, she referred to Waje and Tiwa Savage as those whose music have remained original and have been sources of inspiration to her, despite the seemingly shallow trend in the music industry.

Yemi promised to continue the story of that real Johnny in another song.

Reviewing 2013: It’s Been A Year Of Endorsements In Entertainment – Areh

The CEO of Wildflower PR, Omah Areh, has rated the Nigerian entertainment industry to have done very well during the year 2013.

Areh was a guest on the last edition of Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television for the year, where she did a review of happenings during the year.

According to her, Nigerian musicians took their acts to the next level in 2013, considering how many of them had tours in foreign countries, most especially in Europe and North America.

Citing examples like P-Square, Iyanya, Flavour, Davido and many others, she said that the most notable part of this is not that they performed abroad, but that many of their concert tickets sold out, with massive crowds coming to watch them.

She also noted that the industry is now taken more seriously by Corporate Nigeria, as brands are appreciating the fact that there are a lot of things to be part of in the industry.

With telecom companies leading the pack, she commended the involvement of many local businesses in the industry; she said “It was a year of endorsements”. Afeez Oyetoro, popularly called Saka and his highly celebrated switch between two giant telecom brands was cited as example of the fact that brands have really taken the industry serious.

She added that at a point it looked like there were no more artistes without an endorsement deal. The artistes are now seen as brands themselves and companies are happy to identify with them as ambassadors.

She noted that the implication of this development is that more of these artistes now have better funds to invest in their careers and this has added to the quality of work being churned out from Nigeria.

“There are also more concerts” according to her, with singer, Dare’s ‘Love Like A Movie’ concert among the most eye catching in 2013.

She also noted that, beautiful actress, Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, being named by TIME Magazine among the world’s Top 100 influential people shows how much the entertainment industry grew in 2013.

There were expressions of hope that someday, concerts in Nigeria would be even greater with arenas fully packed with everyone standing.

On the gloomy side, the many deaths of Nigerian entertainers put a dent on Areh’s many reasons to celebrate the industry, especially with many of them being young people. Fatai Rolling Dollar, Justus Esiri, Goldie Havie, were among those mentioned with singer, Goldie’s drawing a lot of attention becasue she passed on at a time when she was just gaining prominence.

The industry also saw many weddings in 2013 but there were many crashed marriages too according to Areh. However she thinks that is nothing to frown about.

She advised that the art of peeping into people’s private lives is catching on in Nigeria because people find it amusing to see the privacy of their celebrities. She therefore expects that more Nigerian stars would take a cue from the likes of American superstar, Beyoncé (who shot a documentary of herself) and embrace the global trend of celebrity reality shows in 2014.

I Compete Only With Men In Nigeria’s Music Industry – Tiwa Savage

Nigeria’s RnB diva, Tiwa Savage has thrown down the gauntlet against her female peers in the music industry as she deems none of them a threat.

When asked on this week’s edition of Rubbin’ Minds, who she considered the biggest threat to Tiwa Savage amongst the female vocalists, she replied, “none actually.”

“In my head the people I compete against are the male artistes” she affirmed, adding that “for me I look at the bigger picture fortunately.”

“I look at people like Wizkid, Iyanya, Tuface, D’banj, Ice Prince. They are getting MOBOs, BET awards, MTVs, so I’m like I’m coming for you guys” she stated.

She traced the immense success of male artistes to the typical male dominance in Nigeria as seen across diverse profession and this; she is willing to take on.

She however gave kudos to other female artistes saying “we are working harder to close the gap.”
