Brazil right-back Dani Alves was ruled out of the World Cup on Friday after suffering a knee injury playing for French champions Paris Saint-Germain, the Brazilian football federation (CBF) said.

“All possibilities for his recovery being exhausted, it will be impossible to select Daniel Alves… for the World Cup,” said the CBF in a statement.

The 35-year-old suffered the injury playing in Tuesday’s French Cup final against Les Herbiers, coming off four minutes from the end as PSG beat the minnows 2-0.

The World Cup, where Brazil are aiming for a sixth title, starts in Russia on June 14.

Brazilian legend and three-time World Cup-winner Pele tweeted: “I am so sad to hear this. Footballers hate missing games but I know first-hand that missing #WorldCup games is the worst feeling.”

The injury to Alves is the second major blow for Brazil who are still sweating on the recovery from foot surgery of star striker Neymar who hasn’t played since March.

Alves has played 107 times for Brazil since making his debut in 2006 and looked a certain starter for Tite’s team at the World Cup finals in Russia where Brazil are grouped with Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia.

Tite is due to name his squad on Monday.

PSG coach Unai Emery said he sympathised with Alves missing what would have been his last World Cup.

“The doctors have studied what is best for Dani Alves. I am really sorry for him,” said Emery.

Alves, a former Barcelona and Juventus star, has won 38 trophies in his career — a new record secured by PSG’s French Cup triumph on Tuesday.

In his 17-year career, he won his first trophy with boyhood club Esporte Clube de Bahia followed by five at Sevilla, 23 with Barcelona, two at Juventus and four so far at PSG.

For Brazil, Alves has secured three winner’s medals.

Worryingly for Tite, there is no outstanding natural replacement for Alves in the right-back slot.

Fagner, who plays for Corinthians, is currently injured and will be visited by team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar — the surgeon who operated on Neymar — on Sunday.

Manchester City’s Danilo has been criticised for his displays this season.

Neymar, 26, for whom PSG paid a world record 222 million euros ($263 million) last summer, is expected to be fit for the World Cup.

“We need him in the national side too,” said clubmate and compatriot Marquinhos.

“The most important thing is that he’s happy and well looked after.”

Lasmar, meanwhile, told Folha, a Sao Paulo newspaper, that the goal is to have Neymar “100 percent fit for the start of training camp” in Brazil on May 21.

Man U Confirm Ibrahimovic Out With ‘Significant’ Knee injury

MourinhoManchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered significant knee ligament damage in the Europa League clash between the Red Devils and Anderlecht, the club confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

“Detailed investigations on the injuries sustained by Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Thursday’s Europa League match have confirmed significant knee ligament damage in both players that requires specialist opinions over the coming days,” United said.

Reports in the British press suggest the Swede could be out for as long as nine months, but the club did not provide details of how long he and defender Rojo would be sidelined.

“Estimations of time to full recovery will only be possible once definitive treatment plans have been decided after these consultations,” the statement noted.

Ibrahimovic, United’s top scorer for the season with 28 goals, had landed badly during the game and is expected to miss the rest of the season and the chance to add to his legend at age 35.

The outspoken striker is approaching the end of his one-year contract with United and there have been talks of a renewal as well as links to a transfer to the US.

A lot could change with the injury.

Beside the injuries which pose a major threat to Jose Mourinho’s quest for a top four finish in the Premier League and Europa League glory for his side, Thursday’s clash was tragic for football fans in Nigeria.

Many fans who were watching the United-Anderlecht clash at a viewing centre in Calabar were electrocuted when a high-tension wire fell on the roof of the building.

United have since send their condolences to the families of the victim, while President Muhammadu Buhari said he was shocked and saddened by the tragedy.

United will take on Spanish side Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-finals on May 4 and 11, thanks to the costly victory.

Everton: Koeman Says Bolasie Could Be Out Until 2018

Everton, Ronald Koeman, Yannick BolasieEverton Manager, Ronald Koeman, says Yannick Bolasie may be out for a year with a knee injury.

Koeman, who made the announcement on Wednesday, described the winger’s injury as a big disappointment.

“It will be around 11-12 months before he is back. That is a big disappointment but he will come back,” the Dutchman said.

Bolasie hurt his right knee during the Toffees’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 4, 2016.

The 27 years old is due to have a second operation (on his anterior cruciate ligament) in the coming weeks.

Rooney Injured, To Miss England vs. Spain Friendly

Wayne Rooney Injured, To Miss England vs. Spain FriendlyLiverpool midfielder, Jordan Henderson will captain England against Spain on Tuesday, with Wayne Rooney injured.

Wayne Rooney and left back Ryan Bertrand are injury doubts for the year-ending friendly as they were the only players absent from training on the eve of the meeting with Spain at Wembley.

Having started the previous game – a 0-0 draw away to Slovenia – on the bench, forward Rooney returned to lead the side in Friday’s World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

He then missed training with a knee injury on Monday and later pulled out of the squad.

“Both are being assessed. They had minor issues this morning, so we’ll have a look at them as the game goes on,” said interim manager, Gareth Southgate, on Monday.

“Obviously, they weren’t able to train, so they must be a doubt, but until we look at them we won’t know for sure.”

Henderson, 26, captained England in their 0-0 draw in Slovenia in October when Rooney was dropped to the bench.

“I don’t think we can have just one captain,” Southgate said.

“We have several leaders. Too much responsibility has been on Wayne – we need to share that. Once you have a team of those leaders you can have a lot of success.”

Tottenham striker, Harry Kane will also not feature against Spain, having been released from the squad over the weekend as he recovers from injury.

The 23-year-old damaged an ankle against Sunderland on 18 September and only returned for 73 minutes of action against Arsenal on 6 November before joining up with the England squad.

He was an unused substitute for the 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley.

Victoria Azarenka Ruled Out Of Wimbledon

Victoria Azarenka, Wimbledon, serena williamsTwo-time grand slam champion Victoria Azarenka has been ruled out of Wimbledon with a knee injury.

The 26-year-old was seeded sixth for the tournament which begins on Monday.

The two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist has not played since retiring from her first-round match against Italian Karin Knapp at last month’s French Open.

The Belarusian’s withdrawal means five-time champion Venus Williams will move up into the top eight seeds.

Azarenka, who won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, has been plagued by foot injuries in recent years.

Meanwhile, world number one, Serena Williams says she is looking forward to playing in this year’s Wimbledon championships, describing the event as special.

Serena, who has been confirmed as the top seed in the women’s singles is aiming to win her 22nd grand slam title.

She has also been speaking on the Rio 2016 Olympics and the dreaded Zika virus that has led to the withdrawals of some high profile athletes.

Chelsea Ready For Stoke Clash – Mourinho

chelseaChelsea Manager, Jose Mourinho, on Friday said that none of his players have returned from their international duty with injury, adding that those who have fitness problems have recovered.

The Chelsea boss made known the clean bill of health for his squad at his pre-match media conference.

According to, Mourinho told journalists that Diego Costa who came off in the last league game at Hull City, due to a hamstring injury, will be available for tomorrow’s match against Stoke, adding that a decision is yet to be made on whether the striker will begin the game or be on the bench.

“Diego trained yesterday and today with the group and he is not injured,” Mourinho said.

“I don’t know if I start with him or not because after a muscular injury and then just two days with the group, I need to analyse the situation with him and make a decision.

“His injury was the same as before, hamstring, and he dedicated himself to that with no days off for him or the medical department, working morning and afternoon. We did all the tests and scans to confirm the situation two days ago and at the moment the muscle is fine, but football is more than that, you need confidence, you need to believe you are free to express yourself at the maximum intensity and that is our doubt at the moment. Let’s see in the next 24 hours.

“All the season he works on prevention to make the muscle stronger and at the same time elastic and flexible, recovering well with no big accumulation of fatigue. Myself and the medical department always believe that an operation is the last resort for every injury – so we try always to train and recover to compensate the little problems. I don’t believe we will ever go to the surgery option.”

Speaking about John Mikel Obi, he said the Midfielder is in full training again, following minor knee surgery, but will not be considered for the game.

“Mikel is fine and working all week with the group but he is very tired so he is not selected, but he is not injured,” the manager said, explaining that rehabilitation training differs significantly from training for match action.

The Manager added, “He is tired because he was injured for a month, he had surgery and he was not working with the group, so after four sessions with the group he needs time to adapt and needs time to be in condition.”

The Nigerian’s tiredness is different, Mourinho told the conference, from that attributed to Eden Hazard, following his international action. There is no doubt the Belgian will be ready for action tomorrow.

“Eden was tired because he played two games in three days and he played in Israel. He traveled and he didn’t sleep as he arrived in Belgium at 5 or 6 in the morning. He is tired because he played and we think that he can recover in these couple of days and he starts the game tomorrow.”

“That is football for a player who is important for club and national team. He is a player that I want to play every time and his coach for his country wants to play him every time. He is player who plays with the ball, he creates and dribbles and plays with lots of intensity so it is not a surprise he can be a bit tired – but I believe in him, I believe in the team and I believe in his ambition to play and his desire to play and help the team to reach the season’s objective, so I start with him.”

Speaking on the game against Stoke city the Chelsea boss said,”Everybody knows the way Stoke play but they are difficult opponents and that is why they have no problem staying in the Premier League. They have a manager who is there a couple of years and has a new contract and the same players and they are very stable. Everyone knows the way they play but it is difficult for everyone.”

Mourinho added that the team needs six victories and one draw from nine remaining matches.
