Dignitaries Storm Ile-Ife As 51st Ooni Gets Staff Of Office

OoniNigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has asked the new Ooni of Ife, His Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi to work for the unity of Yorubas both within Nigeria and in diaspora.

Vice President Osinbajo offered the advice to the paramount ruler on Monday at the official presentation of staff of office to the 51st Ooni of Ife.

The traditional monarch’s inauguration ceremony, which held in Ile Ife, Osun State, was witnessed by traditional rulers as well as political and tribal leaders.

“As we celebrate and experience the pump and pageantry of the cult of Ooni and the expression in songs and dance of the ancient folklore of the proud people of this cradle of Yoruba civilization, we are reminded of the weightier matter of the great responsibility that has to be on His Royal Majesty, the new Ooni,” Professor Osinbajo said.

Past and present governors of Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos; leaders of the APC, captains of industries, traditional rulers from the southwest states, the Sultan of Sokoto, Dein of Agbor and the Obong of Calabar amongst others were not left out of the ceremony.

The Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, said, “Kingship appointment is not an ordinary one and by our culture and tradition, the King rules on behalf of the gods.

“He is therefore accountable not just to men but also to the gods as well, for good governance and sustenance of the legacies of the past 50 kings before him.”

Other dignitaries also took turns to deliver their goodwill messages laden with calls for peace, unity and responsibility for the youths, and the Ooni himself in his speech assured well-wishers that he was aware of the responsibilities bestowed on him.

“If we have leadership there will be followership, the two go hand in hand. You cannot be king over animals nor plants, it has to be human beings,” he said.

Inauguration Of New Ooni Begins

OoniAn inter-religious service has held at the Ile Oodua in Ile Ife, Osun State to usher in the commencement of the inauguration of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II (The second) as the 51st Ooni Of Ife.

Christians, Muslims as well as traditional believers all gathered in front of the palace to offer prayers for the successful reign ‎of the Ooni and for the peace and progress of the Yoruba race.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola, at the inter-religious programme, said that the seat of the Ooni holds a very significant position in the history of the Yoruba ethnic group, as such it must play the role of unifying all.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the Osun State Government, Moshood ‎ Adeoti, stated that the Yoruba people were expectant that the new Ooni would promote peace, unity, development and oneness of the Yoruba people across the world.

The Governor and all the clerics urged all Nigerians to pray for traditional rulers as they are the custodians of culture and peace.

Buhari Congratulates New Ooni Of IfeNigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has congratulated Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi on his emergence as the 51st Ooni of Ife and successor to the late Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari rejoiced with Prince Adeyeye on his nomination as Ooni by the kingmakers of Ife after a keenly contested, but peaceful selection process and confirmation on Tuesday by Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State.

As he prepares to begin the rites of ascension to the revered throne of his great ancestors, President Buhari urged the Ooni-designate to commit himself to carrying all his subjects along to a new era of peace, stability and progress in Ife, Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole.

The President called on Prince Adeyeye to be prepared to put his new position as Ooni and principal custodian of the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Yorubas to good use in the service of his people and country.

President Buhari also urged the Ooni-designate to dedicate himself to building on and surpassing the worthy legacies of his much-acclaimed predecessor, Oba Sijuwade and working with government and other traditional rulers across the country to foster greater harmony, peaceful co-existence and faster socio-economic development of his people and all Nigerians.

As Prince Adeyeye ascends to the grand throne of the Ooni of Ife, the President prayed that God Almighty would grant him the immense wisdom and courage he would require to oversee further progress and greater prosperity for his people.

He wished the new Ooni a long and highly successful reign in the service of his people and country.
