Torres describes scoring ‘all-important’ goal

It was as if Fernando Torres read the minds of manager Roberto Di Matteo concerning the solution to finding a suitable replacement for the Spaniard upfront as he braced up  against the Gunners, stunning the London club with what will pass as his fifth goal of the season after 20 minutes into the local derby during the weekend.

Torres said It was important because it gave Chelsea the time to settle into the game and he was very happy for his goal and country man Juan Mata’s goal.

Gunners’ player Gervinho equalised for Arsenal shortly before half-time before another Spaniard Juan Mata scored the winning goal for the Blues in the 53rd minute.

Arsenal has been criticised though for not knowing how to deal with its set pieces while in the game against Chelsea as it became a constant threat to the backline of Arsenal with Koscielny taking the fault for Torres’ ‘all-important’ opener.

According to Fernando Torres “It was a one-against-one against Koscielny and he wasn’t facing the ball, so I could touch the ball before he could put the ball away.”

The 28-year-old was delighted to keep the Blues top of the Premier League with victory.

Podolski can be kept quiet – Marko Marin

One of new Chelsea signings for the 2012/2013 season Marko Marin boasted that Chelsea will have no problem keeping his German rival Lukas Podolski under control as both clubs will be meeting for a London Derby.

Podolski who has been in a tremendous form will be a huge threat to the Blues’ hopes of winning Saturday’s London derby against Arsenal.

After a slow start, Podolski has bagged three goals in his last four Gunners games.

Attacking midfielder Marin, 23, said: “At the beginning it was a bit new for him, but now he is doing very well.“He has scored a few goals and he is playing well.

“Will Lukas be a threat? I think we have a very good defence. Our right-back Branislav Ivanovic will do very well.“It will be very hard for Lukas to play against him. I am not sure that Arsenal has played against a good team like us.

“I am confident that we can keep Podolski quiet.“There are two German players that we will be playing against, with Per Mertesacker also playing for Arsenal.

“I have not spoken to Lukas. We know each other from the national team, of course, but we are not really friends. “I hope I’m in the team, but the important thing is that we win and keep our position in the Premier League.”

Marin finally made his Blues debut in the 6-0 Capital One Cup rout of Wolves after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury. He said: “I did it in a training session, but I feel good now and I can forget all that and look to the future.

“I just want to play for as long as possible, for as many games as I can. I am nearly 100 per cent fit again, so I hope to play.” Meanwhile, full-back Ryan Bertrand aims to build on his success after scoring in Tuesday night’s romp.

The 23-year-old has played a part in all but two games this season and forced his way into the England reckoning.

He said: “The year just keeps getting better for me so as long as I can keep it going, I should be able to do good things.

“We want to keep it going and hopefully repeat the success we had last year.”

Esteban Granero ready for Chelsea in weekend derby

Esteban Granero said he cant wait to make his home debut for QPR in this weekend’s derby clash with Chelsea.

Rangers face a tough task against the in-form Premier League leaders, who have made a brilliant start to their campaign.

And the midfielder, recently signed from Real Madrid, says he is well aware that local pride will be at stake when Roberto Di Matteo’s side visit Loftus Road.

“Chelsea is one of the great teams and also our neighbours. QPR supporters are very excited by this game and expect a good game,” he said.

“It’s a great game for our supporters against our neighbours. It’s not just about three points – it’s more important than that.

“The supporters of QPR are looking forward to this game and so am I – my first game at Loftus Road.”

New-look Rangers have drawn at Norwich and lost at Manchester City since being thumped 5-0 at home by Swansea on the opening day of the season.

But Granero insisted: “At first it’s normal to take time to get to know each other as we have a lot of new players. We will have a good season.

“We have only one point but it’s not the way it’s going to be. This season is going to be great – I can see it.”

City beats United to get lifeline, back in control

The much talked about local derby between the two Manchester clubs; Manchester City and Manchester United ended minutes ago with Manchester City smiling  as victors as Manchester United sleepily lost to their arch rivals putting City back on top.

By this, the English Premier League title race which is already nosing towards the end of the season might be claimed by Manchester city as they are now in control of the table, occupying the number one spot with 83 points, same point shared with United but a goal difference of 8 points and the turnaround of events boiled down to the great move made by Vincent Kompany and it sure made the difference tonight.

A David Silva’s corner sets Vincent Kompany to rise higher above all other players with so much strength mustered to head the ball into the right direction to the astonishment of United defenders towards the end of the first half.

A definitely bewildered United after the goal by Kompany had from the beginning of the match approached the derby with a defensive mind set in a bid to frustrate Manchester City who played host to the Red Devils at Etihad Stadium.

Going into the second half United came out of their shells but it was too late as Manchester City stood grounds so hard not to concede or get complacent bearing in mind the consequence of a draw or lose on home ground to United with two games remaining for the season to end and a winner of the league to be crowned.

It would be recalled Manchester City already lost hope over the EPL title thereby conceding the title to Manchester United as he declared them most favourite the season to lift the title because according to him would have two easy games after playing Etihad Stadium while his own club will embark on two tough games after playing host to United.

However, this derby which ended in favour of Manchester City can be capped a remarkable comeback for the Manchester club after falling at Emirates Stadium to Arsenal and the defeat left them eight points behind their fierce local foe at the top of the table.

A tough and gripping two weeks of the English Premier League is being expected because nothing right now can be predictable as both teams go into their last two games of the season to decide who will be crowned.
