British actor, Idris Elba, has won for his roles in a detective drama ‘Luther’ and for his supporting role as an African warlord in ‘Beasts of No Nation’ at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
The film, about the Boston Globe’s investigation of paedophile Catholic priests, won for best film cast.
But many of the main awards in Los Angeles were won by actors of diverse backgrounds, with industry magazine, Variety, noting that “diversity reigns”.
The awards came amid controversy over a lack of diversity among Oscar nominees.
The female prison series, ‘Orange Is The New Black’ won the ensemble award for a comedy series, and its star Uzo Aduba for best comedy actress in a television series.
The series has earned praise for its diverse cast and willingness to address race issues. Accepting the cast award, actress Laura Prepon referred to her cast mates, saying: “This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity.”
The three main acting awards were given to films with mainly white casts, Spotlight, The Revenant and Room, all of which are among the Oscar favourites.
Other main winners of the SAG Awards include:
Brie Larson (Room) – Best film actress Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) – Best film actor Queen Latifah (Bessie) – Outstanding performance by an actress in a TV miniseries or movie Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) – Best actor in a television drama series Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) – Best actress in a television drama series Downton Abbey – Best television drama ensemble.

Liverpool FC Captain, Steven Gerrard, is to have a scan on a hamstring injury as Liverpool wait to find out the extent of the problem.
The midfielder was seen limping off with an injury during a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
Prior to this, Major League Soccer club, LA Galaxy, had confirmed that Steven Gerrard would be joining it in July on an 18-month deal.
Steven Gerrard, while expressing his excitement said “I’m very excited to begin the next chapter of my career in the United States with LA Galaxy.
“The Galaxy are the most successful club in Major League Soccer history and I am looking forward to competing for more championships in the years to come,” Gerrard told the MLS club’s official website.
Gerrard who is, to date, the only footballer ever to have scored a goal in an FA Cup Final, a League Cup Final, a UEFA Cup Final and a Champions League Final, told the Liverpool Echo, that he would have agreed to continue his long Liverpool career, had the club offered him a new contract.
Meanwhile, the English club has expressed hope that Gerrard would still be able to play his usually key roles in the team’s quest for a good finish in the Premier League before his impending move to the U.S.
Liverpool Assistant Manager, Colin Pascoe, said of the injury, “Unfortunately, he felt his hamstring towards the end of the game and he is having a scan this morning and we are just waiting for results to come back.
“Hopefully the scans won’t show too much but as we’ve not got the results I can’t say too much.”
Gerrard would also be hoping that the injury is a minor one as he had declared his desire to give more to his boyhood club before departure.
“I am committed to helping the LA Galaxy compete for trophies and to having an impact in Los Angeles and I will give my all for the club.
“In the meantime, I will continue to give everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this season before joining up with the Galaxy,” said Gerrard.
The former England captain had spent his entire career at Liverpool, making nearly 700 appearances and winning the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
The 34-year-old midfielder would join a growing list of high-profile former Premier League players to cross the Atlantic in the latter stages of their careers, most notably David Beckham.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool striker, Robbie Keane, will be a teammate of Gerrard at the Galaxy while former Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard had signed for New York City FC, although he is still in England on loan at Manchester City.

Singer Chris Brown’s probation was revoked on Thursday when a judge found he should not have left Los Angeles County to perform in San Jose without the court’s permission, but the entertainer was allowed to remain free at least until March.
The “Turn Up the Music” singer was ordered to return for a probation violation hearing on March 20, Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, said in an email.
Brown, 25, appeared in court with his girlfriend, model Karrueche Tran, after performing at a club last weekend in San Jose in Northern California where police said five people were shot and wounded. Under the terms of his probation, Brown was not allowed to leave Los Angeles County.
Brown’s attorney Mark Geragos said in court that his office had mistakenly informed the singer he could go to Northern California without the judge’s permission.
But Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Brandlin said Brown was responsible for following the terms of his probation and Brandlin ordered that it be revoked, but allowed the R&B singer to remain free at least until the upcoming hearing.
The singer’s probation stems from his pleading guilty in 2009 to assaulting singer Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time, on the eve of the Grammy Awards.
In 2013, Judge Brandlin revoked Brown’s probation after he was accused of punching a man trying to get a picture of the singer in Washington, D.C., but he was not taken into custody in Los Angeles at that time because of good reports on his progress.

Nigerian music star, Davido won the Best International Act-Africa.
The night’s big winner was Beyonce. The pop superstar got three awards, including the 2014 FAN-demonium award, voted on by viewers. Pharrell Williams and August Alsina also had a happy night, taking home two awards apiece.
Nicki Minaj won for Best Female Hip Hop Star, and in her acceptance speech, she praised herself as a hip-hop star that doesn’t have someone writing for her, an apparent dig at Iggy Azalea. Drake beat out Jay Z for Best Male Hip Hop star.
12 Years a Slave was chosen as Best Movie, with the film’s stars, Lupita Nyong’o and Chiwetel Ejiofor, taking home acting awards. Lionel Richie was honored as the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
One memorable moment of the night was Kevin Hart interrupting presenter, Kerry Washington and referring to himself as “Oliver Pope,” a reference to Washington’s Scandal character, Olivia Pope.

R&B singer Chris Brown is entering rehab “to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior,” the singer’s representatives said on Tuesday, after Brown was arrested and charged with assault over the weekend.
Brown, 24, pleaded not guilty on Monday to misdemeanor assault after police reports said the singer and his bodyguard both punched a man in the face outside a Washington hotel, where Brown had a nightclub appearance.
“Chris Brown has elected to enter a rehab facility. His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point,” the singer’s representatives said in a statement, a day after Brown appeared in court.
Brown is due back in court on November 20, and if convicted, faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The Grammy-winning “Look at Me Now” singer has faced a string of legal troubles and has been on probation since 2009, when he assaulted pop singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend. His sentence included domestic violence counseling.
His probation was revoked over the summer after he was charged in a hit-and-run traffic accident in Los Angeles, but reinstated after the singer committed to another 1,000 hours of community service.
U.S. rapper Lil Wayne said on Friday he was fine and thanked fans for their concern after a reported seizure that led TMZ.com to claim he was in a medically induced coma and near death.
“I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love,” Wayne said in a Twitter message on his official account.
The 30-year-old rapper’s spokeswoman Sarah Cunningham said in an email that “Lil Wayne is recovering,” but did not specify what he was suffering from.
She was responding to a TMZ.com report citing unnamed sources which said Wayne was in critical condition, and near death, at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.
Rapper Mack Maine said in a Twitter posting earlier that Wayne was “alive and well. We watching the Syracuse (basketball) game…thanks for the prayers and concern.”
Maine said fans should not “believe the nonsense about comas and tubes to breathe.”
TMZ said the rapper was admitted to Cedars-Sinai for seizures and released on Wednesday. But the website said he was readmitted a few hours later after his bodyguard found him unconscious on the floor of his room. It said his mother was flying to Los Angeles on Friday to be at his bedside.
Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., has suffered several unexplained seizures in the past few months, including two in January while on a plane flight.
Wayne, a native of New Orleans, began rapping at the age of nine, when he became the youngest artist to be signed by Cash Money record label.
The “Got Money” rapper has released nine studio albums over a two decade career and has become one of the biggest names in rap music.
