MASSOB Members Stage Peaceful Procession To Mark Anniversary

MASSOB, BiafraMembers of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Abia State on Tuesday defied the rains as they marched in a peaceful procession through Umuahia and some local government areas.

The procession was to celebrate the 17th year anniversary of the group.

Men, women and retired soldiers who call themselves ‘Freedom fighters’ were seen carrying placards and singing songs hinting that they have reasons to celebrate.

Some of them who spoke to Channels Television disclosed that they would only believe in Nigeria as one nation if things would be done differently.

They condemned what they described as recent massive killings of their fellow southerners in the northern part of the country, inequality in governance, amongst many others.

According to Evans Okoronkwo and Kingsley Nwosu, the way the country is going has become a source of concern that indicates that it is not one nation as being portrayed to the world.

MASSOB Protest: Deputy Senate President Condemns South-east Killings

Ike-Ekweremadu-Senate-Deputy-president on MASSOB and south-east killingsThe Deputy Senate President, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned in strong terms, the reported killing of young men and women by security operatives in parts of the South-east Nigeria.

At Tuesday’s legislative proceedings at the Senate, Senator Ekweremadu raised a point of order drawing the attention of the Upper Chamber to the bloodbath in the South-East region of the country on Monday.

The Deputy President of the Senate further noted that the country had recorded so much bloodshed in various parts of the country in the past, urging security agencies to apply caution in quelling perceived disturbances in any part of Nigeria.

MASSOB Clash With Police

On Monday members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed with security operatives in some states in the south east.

Two police officials were reported killed, with some other persons injured.

Members of the groups also claimed that some of their members were killed.

Tension had started in Anambra State, as persons suspected to be members of MASSOB mounted road blocks and set bonfire in Nkpor and Onitsha causing the roads to be deserted.

According to the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, the suspected members of MASSOB gathered at a school in Nkpor with identifying flags emblazoned with the rising sun symbols and charms but with mission unknown.

Agitation For Biafra Republic

Also, in Asaba, the Delta State’s capital, several people were injured as a planned protest by members of MASSOB degenerated into a fight.

The MASSOB members had planned peaceful protests across south eastern states to mark 49 years of the agitation for Biafra Republic (1967 to 2016), on Monday.

The fight reportedly broke out when Police tried to disperse the protesters by firing teargas at them.

This action infuriated the protesters who allegedly reacted angrily and this degenerated into a larger fracas.

Two policemen died in the process.

The Police, however, arrested eight and wounded four members of MASSOB alleged to have been involved in the killing of the two policemen.

The arrests were made by the Delta State Police Command on Monday.

According to a statement signed by the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Muka, the members of the group attacked policemen and army patrol team at three locations at Cable Point and Abraka areas where they killed two policeman, injured two others and made away with one AK.47 rifle and one smoke gunner.

Police Sensitizes Stakeholders, Citizens On Security Awareness In Anambra

police obianoThe Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hassan Karma, says adequate deployment has been made in various border areas of the state following, the recent attack on Nimbo community in Enugu state which shares a common boundary with Anambra state at Ayamelum Local Government Area axis.

The Police Commissioner revealed this during a one day Security Awareness Dialogue organized by the office of the Secretary to the Anambra state government in conjunction with Anambra state Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka.

The seminar which targets security consciousness among citizens in the prevailing circumstance of the time afforded participants the opportunity to understand their role in the cause of effective maintenance of security which involves community vigilance and support for the law enforcement agencies.

Delivering his speech on the role of the Nigeria Police in Internal Security, the Anambra state Commissioner of Police stated that crime has gone nuclear with its lethal and sophisticated disposition and therefore should be prevented at all cost, just as the state has commenced proactive security of the borders of the state following the Fulani Herdsmen attack on Nimbo community of Enugu state.

The participants were also urged to assist the law enforcement agencies with useful information on criminals and their activities as well as participate actively in the security of their environment by also supporting the community-based vigilante groups for proper internal security operations that will lead to crime detection and prevention.

Anambra: Upsurge In Murder Cases Worry Police

Anambra-Police-MurderPolice have expressed worry over the upsurge of murder cases in Anambra State.

The Police Commissioner, Mr Hassan Karma, revealed this when the members of the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Police Affairs and Security paid him a visit.

While he lamented the poor manpower which was a total of 4,317 personnel, he stressed that cultism and high incidence of murder cases were most worrisome.

However, he happily announced that kidnapping and armed robbery have been seriously curbed with only five kidnap cases recorded since December 2015.

Mr Karma also added that the kidnap victims were rescued within three days while the suspects were apprehended.

He commended the legislators for recognising the contribution of the Police Command in ensuring safety of lives and property in the state.

With the law passed by the State Assembly on the penalty for kidnapping, the Police Commissioner said that Anambra State was no longer in the news for the wrong reasons as the security narrative of the state had changed for the better.

In his response, the Chairman of the Committee, Victor Okoye, assured the Police of maximum support and cooperation for effective service delivery.

The committee’s visit was to familiarise with the Police and ensure synergy in the area of proper enactment of laws to enhance and strengthen security operations in Anambra State.

Anambra Community Gets New Police Station, Patrol Van

AnambraThe Commissioner of Police in Anambra State has commissioned a permanent Police station and a Hilux Police Patrol Vehicle in Awgbu community of the state.

Addressing the residents, Mr Hassan Karma commended their initiative in contributing to the development, saying it was worthy of emulation by all and sundry.

He encouraged them to sustain the tempo of support for the Police and always report suspicious characters and movements in the community to ensure a safe and secured environment.

The Police Commissioner recalled that Anambra State was formerly regarded as an unsafe place to live in or do business due to the alarming rate of violence but the cooperation of the Police, other security agencies, the state government and the people of the state has helped to reduce the trend of crime.

He assured the people that the new Police station would assist the Divisional Police Headquarters while urging the Divisional Police Officer of Ajalli Division to take proper charge of the new police station.

The Local Government Chairman, Okey Enekwe, called for a new Police division to be created in the LGA to serve over five communities, as well as help in combating border clashes with the neighbouring Enugu State.

The President-General of the community, John Onwuka, also thanked the community for rallying to achieve the feat, stating that the communities must not return to the days when jungle justice was meted on the people by some elements in the traditional community police.


Anambra Police Dismiss Rumours Of Heavy Blockage At Onitsha Bridge Head

OnitshaThe Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, has dismissed rumours that the traffic gridlock at the bridge head axis of Onitsha is caused by military checkpoint.

The Police Commissioner said that despite the influx of people into the state, the security agencies have been doing their best to ensure the road is not congested.

He blamed the impatience among motorists and other road users for the traffic situation in the area.

Mr Karma also cautioned citizens against unnecessary exaggeration of situations or raising false alarm, saying this would not be beneficial to anybody.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have been in charge of directing traffic in and out of the state.

Obiano Gives Police Security Cars To Boost Security

Willie-ObianoThe Anambra State government has donated 25 advanced patrol vans and other tactical operation equipment for combating crime to the Police in the state.

Commissioning and test-driving the vehicles, Governor Willie Obiano said the latest security development was part of his commitment to eradicating crime in the Nigeria’s southeast commercial state.

“We have entered a new phase in the pursuit of security in Anambra State.

“These cars are modeled after the Rapid Response cars used by the police in the United States of America.

“The mere appearance of these cars gives a strong warning of the resolve of my administration to free our people from the fear of criminals for good,” Governor Obiano said.

Commending the Governor, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, said Anambra State had set a worthy pace in security management in Nigeria.

He expressed optimism that the development would enhance police visibility in every area of the state as well as counter any threat to individual or collective security and safety.

The Police boss urged other State Executives especially in the South-eastern region, to emulate the Governor Obiano administration’s strategy in tackling security challenges.

While the Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke, shared the security exploits of the current administration, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, gave an insight into what the advanced security cars could do in saving lives.

Senior police officers and other security agencies as well as government functionaries, traditional rulers, clergy and a large crowd of Anambra State citizens were all present at the security event.

Governor Willie Obiano also maintains that the latest security development in the state is a strong narrative of his commitment to ensure that crime and criminality becomes a thing of the past.

Gowon Dismisses Potential Biafran Threat

GowonMeanwhile, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has dismissed any potential threat to Nigeria’s unity as a result of the activities of some pro-Biafra group.

General Gowon, who noted that Nigerians have put behind them the ugly memories of the 1967 civil war, pointed out that those behind the protests were youths who have no idea what the war cost Nigerians.

The elder statesman was speaking in Lafia, the Nasarwa State capital shortly after a malaria eradication campaign visit to Governor Tanko Al-Makura.

He expressed confidence that the campaign was being driven by just a few people and that majority of the Igbo people do not share the view.

While admitting that they protesters had the right to express their feelings he stated “with Biafra it is finished”.

Police Warn Pro-Biafran Groups To Cease Operations

MASSOB and IPOB Demonstrate for BiaraPolice have warned two pro-Biafran groups in Anambra State to cease operations or face arrest.

The police said the warning was issued to check the rampage of the members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various parts of Anambra state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, issued the warning on Friday, insisting that the groups have been banned by the State government.

Narrating the activities of the group, Mr Karma said they had staged a protest and blocked the Federal Highway and also held a priest hostage and demanded prayers.

“The government has made it very clear that the activities of IPOB and MASSOB is banned in Anambra.

“Traditional rulers have come out and disassociated themselves from it. They said that they were alive and witnessed the Biafran war and know how it affected them. They said that today, we have a country, nobody should create problem for anyone at all,” Mr Karma, said, quoting the traditional rulers.

He stressed that no one should be allowed to hide under any guise to perpetrate crime in Anambra State.

“Anybody who insists on committing crime, whatever name the person has, will be definitely arrested. Our men are all out to see to the arrest and prosecution of such individuals,” the police commissioner said.

Police Arrest 43 MASSOB Members In Anambra

massobForty-three persons suspected to be members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) have been arrested by the State Joint Security Operations and paraded at the Headquarters of Anambra State Police Command in Awka.

The suspects who have been arrested in Nnewi and Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state are said to be on a mission to wreak havoc, but intelligence report filters helped the police.

Twenty-eight of them were arrested at Nnewi where they attacked a Police patrol team while 15 were nabbed at Okpoko, a territory that could be referred to as their stronghold.

Items found on them included MASSOB ID card, tellers used for payment into the group’s account and charms.

Some of the suspects who did not deny their involvement with the group, said they went for thanksgiving to mark the 16th year of existence of MASSOB.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to Anambra State Governor, Chikodi Anara, reiterated the readiness of the state to stamp out any form of criminal activity by any group that would hold the people of the state to ransom.

Though the suspects were arrested, they still maintained that they are a non-violent group that are only committed to the cause of the Igbo nation, maintaining that ‘no matter what happens, Biafra is like a sun that cannot go dim’.

However, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hassan Karma, said the Joint Security Operations will stop at nothing to ensure that the state is safe for its citizenry, while surveillance operations aimed at supporting what the state government wants to achieve for the state, in terms of security, will continue.

Anambra CP Declares Operation Raid On Criminal HideoutsThe Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr Hassan Karma, has announced ”Operation Raid” on all criminal hideouts and camps from August 20.

The police boss’ declaration is coming after his men arrested and recovered arms from suspected armed robbers, who made an attempt to rob unsuspecting members of the public before been caught in Ogidi in Idemili North and Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Areas of Anambra State, South-East Nigeria.

Mr Karma made the disclosure while addressing journalists at the State Police Headquarters in Awka, the state’s capital.

He said the state was at its best in terms of security, stating that the command would not relent in its efforts to suppress criminals, as well as maintain crime free status in Anambra State.

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner also decorated four of his men who were promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

While expressing gratitude to the Inspector General of Police for finding his men worthy of elevation, Karma charged the newly promoted officers to continue to show exemplary work attitude.

He also encouraged them to perform better in order to qualify for more promotion, cautioning that the command would not hesitate to discipline any of them found wanting.
