It Is Time For Igbos To Become Nigeria’s President – Ohaneze Youth Council

The Youth Council of the Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization Ohanaeze Ndigbo says it is time a Nigerian of Igbo extraction becomes president of Nigeria.

Addressing a press conference in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital, the general secretary of the council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike advised Igbos to united ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The group also urged Igbo youths to reject any attempt by anyone or political party to be used as an agent of thuggery to unleash mayhem for political gains, stressing that it is only fair that this next president comes from the Southeast.

Ohaneze youths while urging leaders in the southeast region to unite irrespective of party differences, the group urged the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone the 2023 presidency to the Southeast for equity and fairness.

“It is the turn of Ndigbon to become Nigeria’s President. If by greed it is denied, we will have a rethink.

“We want the two major political parties in Nigeria, the PDP and APC should give their Presidential ticket for the 2023 election to Ndigbo, it is our turn.”

The Ohaneze Youths also condemned in strong terms the killing of farmers in Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists.

The group sympathized with the people of Borno state and urged the Federal Government to rejig the security architecture in the country to tackle insecurity in the country.

Atiku’s Endorsement: Keyamo Challenges Afenifere, Ohaneze, Others To ‘Popularity Contest’

Festus Keyamo, SAN, has said that the Leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, and a faction of Afenifere that recently endorsed Atiku Abubakar, are persons who the masses do not listen to anymore.

The official spokesperson of the APC Presidential Campaign, made this statement while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Keyamo said, “There is nothing that is as fraudulent as known PDP members and sympathizers putting on the apparel of socio-political groups and endorsing their own political parties”.

He further noted that “President Buhari is an unusual leader, who has managed to navigate his way through these middlemen and he has reached the people directly in this country”.

The Senior Advocate went on to challenge the socio-political groups to a popularity contest in states where President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to hold his presidential campaign.

He said, “I want to challenge the so-called groups now, we are still on our campaign rally, let them call a rally the same day we arrive their region, I am challenging them openly, I am challenging the faction of Afenifere, we have not gone to Lagos, we have not gone to Ekiti, the day we are arriving Lagos, I am challenging Afenifere to call a rally of Yoruba people at another venue in Lagos and let us see the turn out”.

The challenge was also thrown to the other socio-political groups including the Middle Belt Forum.

“I am challenging the Middle Belt forum, we have not gone to Benue, we have not gone to other places; to know how connected you are with your people, I challenge you to call a rally the same day we are arriving the middle belt and let us see the turn out at your rally and our rally” Keyamo challenged.

The lawyer argued that the leader of these regions, do not have the ears of the people again.

He said, “The people don’t listen to them again, these are people who have over time represented their own interest and of course they are in tune with the philosophy of Atiku Abubakar who says that he will enrich his own friends. So like bees are attracted to honey, these people are attracted to Atiku Abubakar who wants to enrich his friends”.

Keyamo opined that the endorsement of Atiku Abubakar by the Leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta forum, the Middle Belt Forum, and a faction of Afenifere, is inconsequential.

General Elections: Ohanaeze Ndigbo Endorses Atiku For Presidency

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has endorsed  Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Ohaneze Communique

In its collective search for a polity that is just, egalitarian and inclusive, the Ime Obi Ohaneze Ndi Igbo met today Thursday 24 January, 2019 at the Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, to further deliberate on the future of Ndigbo in the chequred history of a beleaguered country.

After a critical and dispassionate appraisal of the issues and the visible fault lines in our polity, including the analysis of the election manifestos of the various contesting parties, especially with regards to the restructuring of the federation and continued relevance of our people in the Nigerian geopolitical space, the meeting resolved as follows:

That Ohaneze remains the apex socio-cultural organization that works for the interest of the Igbo in and outside Nigeria. It attempts to aggregate the views of all other Igbo platforms;

Ohaneze notes particularly that a major political party (PDP) by the nomination of our son Peter Obi as the Vice presidential candidate has given Ndigbo an opportunity for inclusivity. Ndigbo must seize the moment;

That the presidential candidate of PDP Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made an avowed commitment to restructuring of the federation and reconfirmed same during his recent visit to the United States in his meetings high-level US officials;

In consideration of the above and other relevant existential factors pertaining to the treatment of the Igbo in our polity, the Ime Obi Ohaneze, therefore, hereby ratify the decision reached at the Ohaneze National Executive Committee (NEC)meeting held in Enugu on Tuesday 22 January, 2019, to adopt the Atiku Abubakar/ Peter Obi ticket in the 2019 presidential election. Ime Obi therefore endorses and embraces fully, this ticket without equivocation, especially with regards to the position of Ndigbo at the AWKA Declaration which insisted on a complete restructuring of the Nigerian polity.

Ohaneze urges Ndigbo to see their PVCs as their most potent tool to ensure a restructured polity and for a better society;

The meeting further called on the international community to help to ensure a free and credible 2019 elections in Nigeria;

Finally, Ohaneze urges all Igbo to come out and vote and to protect their votes.

Anambra: Groups Reject Call For Poll Cancellation

Several individuals from the traditional institution in Anambra state as well as, political parties, youth organisations and some governorship candidates have rejected the call for the cancellation of the governorship election which was tagged ‘inconclusive’ by INEC.

Although the electoral umpire has said it would conduct a supplementary election in a bid to cover up lapses encountered in the first election, some groups as well as the PDP have called for the outright cancelation of the election.

They cited cases of financial inducement during the election and the non-conduct of the election in some wards in Idemili North as well as the issues of voters not finding their names in the register and as such were unable to cast their votes.

A former governor of Anambra state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who monitored the election highlighted both the good and the ugly side of the election and maintained that it would be senseless to cancel it.

From the traditional institution, the traditional rulers of Nteje (Rowland Odigbo) and Awka (Gibson Nwosu) stressed that the election was peaceful and saw no reason for the call for cancellation.

They said that those insisting on cancellation should seek redress in the appropriate quarters without disturbing the peace of the state.

Representatives of the Ohaneze and the Association of Town Union, Innocent Onwubuya, Chris Eluemuno and Chinelo Okechukwu condemned the idea in its entirety.

Members of the Coalition of accredited civil society group and state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, said that there won’t be total cancellation of the election.

Chairman, International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, a civil society group led by Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi expressed surprise at the sudden lack of boldness by INEC under the law to conduct the election.

He reminded INEC that it has no power to cancel the elections as only the Tribunal has such powers. He also warned that Anambra people will never participate in any fresh poll.
