Sheriff’s Faction Presents Jimoh Ibrahim As Ondo PDP Governorship Candidate

The primary election which lasted over two hours was preceded by an all-night congress among over 800 delegates at the Premier Hotel, Mokola in Ibadan, the Oyo State’s capital in Nigeria’s southwest zone.

The electoral committee, headed by Mr Ahmed Gulak, hinted that the congress was moved out of Akure, the Ondo State capital for security reasons.

After three other aspirants had stepped down for Mr Ibrahim, he polled 502 votes to emerge the winner with his only co-contestant, Mr Olusola Ebiseni, scoring 41 votes while 17 votes were voided.

In his acceptance address, the factional flag bearer promised to defend the mandate by creating jobs and making Ondo State an industrial hub.

The National Vice Chairman and Southwest Chairman, Mr Makanjuola Ogundipe, the PDP Chairman in Ondo State, Mr Popoye Biyi and the Southwest Secretary, Mr Otemolu Adepegba, were among party dignitaries present at the primaries.

Prior to Ibrahim’s emergence, the Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP had presented a former Attorney General of Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, as the flag bearer in the coming governorship poll.

Jegede Wins Ondo PDP Governorship Primaries

A former Attorney General of Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, has emerged the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Mr Jegede was declared winner by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the PDP at the primaries held in Akure, the Ondo State capital in southwest Nigeria.

The former Commissioner for Justice polled 760 votes to defeat his opponent, Mr Saka Lawal who scored 22 votes.

The election was conducted on Monday by the Chairman of the PDP Electoral Committee and Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Seriake Dickson.

It was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security personnel, journalists and various election observers.

Not less than 840 delegates from 203 wards in Ondo State participated in the election.

Ondo Voters Registration: Residents Request For Extension

Nigerian voters registration in OndoResidents of Akure, Ondo State capital, have requested for an extension of the voters registration exercise ahead of the governorship election in the state.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Olusegun Agbaje, said the request for more time had been communicated to the National Headquarters although he felt it was uncalled for.

Agbaje also appealed to politicians to abide by the rules of voting in their various primaries.

Chieftains of the two major political parties in the state – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party – denied any wrong doing in the voter registration exercise and blamed the electoral body.

The APC’s Director of Publicity, Steve Otaloro, also claimed violence marred the exercise at some centres.

Both representatives believe that INEC’s biometric methods of capture should fish out those with multiple registration.

The five-day voters’ registration ended on Sunday June 26 and over 110,000 people across the state were registered in the exercise.

Gov. Mimiko Swears In New Ondo LG Chairmen

OndoOndo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has urged the newly elected local government‎ chairmen in the state to employ team dynamics and good human management in their administration.

The Governor stated this while delivering his address at the swearing-in ceremony for the 18 chairmen in Akure, the State Capital.

Governor Mimiko informed the audience that his administration decided to dissolve the existing local government administration he met in 2009 because it was constituted illegally.

He advised the new chairmen to work together with the career officers, the councillors and traditional rulers‎ in their councils.

Mimiko also advised them to embrace exemplary leadership, transparency and accountability and equally maintain peace and security of their people.

The Chairman of Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Prof. Olugbenga Ige, had earlier in the day, presented Certificates of Return to the chairmen at the commission’s office in Akure.

The swearing-in ceremony held at the International Culture and Eve‎nts Centre, Akure, top government officials including members of the state cabinet, legislators, as well as traditional rulers, relatives and friends of the chairmen witnessed the occasion.

PDP Wins All 18 LG Chairmanship Seats In Ondo

pdpThe Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has announced the final results of Sunday’s local government elections in the state.

Announcing the results at the ODIEC office in Akure, the Chairman, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, announced that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all the 18 chairmanship positions.

He added that the PDP also won 202 councillorship seats out of the 203 seats available, while the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) won the remaining one seat.

He described the conduct of the election as peaceful and the results very impressive.

The APC, which is the major opposition party in the state, ‎has since decided to boycott the elections, which held on Saturday, April 23, 2016.

This was after the Federal Court of Appeal ‎in Akure, the Ondo State capital struck out the case filed by the party to stop the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission from conducting the local government election.

The Appeal Court held that the Federal High Court does not have the jurisdiction over matters involving the conduct of local government elections.

Appeal Court Strikes Out APC’s Suit Against Ondo LG Elections

LG ElectionsThe Federal Court of Appeal ‎in Akure, the Ondo State capital has struck out the case filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state stopping the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission from conducting local government election in the state.

The presiding judge, Justice Folashade Olubanjo, quoting copiously from several sections of the Nigerian Constitution and previously decided cases at the Supreme Court, said that the Federal High Court does not have the jurisdiction over matters involving the conduct of local government elections.

She added that it would amount to judicial pettiness to make pronouncement on the suit when issues on the dissolution of the ‎former councils were still pending before the Supreme Court.

Ondo Flags Off Immunization Campaign Against Measles

MeaslesThe Ondo State Government has flagged off the 2016 campaign against Measles, a childhood killer disease.

The 3-day immunization exercise is targeted at children from the age of 9 months to 5 years.

The flag off ceremony was held at the premises of the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, the state capital.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, gave the assurance that all eligible children in the state would be immunized against measles.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju,‎ urged the gathering to be aware and as well spread the good news that measles is preventable, treatable and curable.

He also gave the assurance that deaths by measles can be reduced by 79%.

A Director at the Ondo State Primary‎ Health Care Development Board, Dr. Yetunde Olagbuji, expressed the readiness of health workers in all the 18 Local Government Areas in the state for the 3-day exercise.

The exercise organised by Ondo State Government, is to complement the National Immunization Schedule‎ by the Federal Ministry of Health.

DPR Monitors Sale Of Fuel In Ondo, Ekiti States

dprThe Akure office of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) covering Ondo and Ekiti States have tracked 15 filling stations in Ondo State and 14 in Ekiti State that were selling petrol above the official price and auctioned the product at the official rate of 87 Naira per litre for customers.

The operation which started in Akure, Ondo State Capital, continued to Ikere- Ekiti in Ekiti State where the team of officials of the DPR, led by the Operatios Controller of DPR in Ondo/Ekiti States, Wale Oseni.

Members of the public in both states had been complaining about the fuel marketers who either hoard, inflate the price or selling for as high as 140 Naira per litre.

Two stations were sealed in Ikere and Ado-Ekiti for hoarding the product, while none was sealed in Akure.

Filling stations such as NNPC, Oando, Forte and Master Energy, who were selling at inflated prices, were monitored to sell at the official price in Akure.

FG Vows To Flush Out Persons Causing Infrastructural Setback

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, made the statement on Wednesday while addressing a gathering at a public function in Akure, the Ondo State Capital.

According to Mr Lawal, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, lamented that Nigeria was currently grappling with the challenge of substandard and abandoned projects.

He called for the support of credible financial institutions in the implementation of such projects.

Also at the gathering was the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. He also emphasised that “the ongoing global economic recession demands the support of professionals in governments projects’ implementation at minimal costs”.

He added that his administration had set a high standard in provision of developmental projects in all sectors of the state’s economy in order to improve the quality of life of the citizenry.

A foremost lawyer and educationist, Mr Afe Babalola, also expressed sadness that Nigeria was facing lots of challenges such as terrorism and unemployment together with decay in core infrastructure.

He pointed out that the problem on ground was the inability to translate blueprint and action plan into practical, transparent and effective results.

Ondo State Gets Adolescent And Youth Friendly Health Centre

ondo gov. wifeThe Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko, has reiterated her support and that of her husband’s administration to the welfare of adolescents and youths in the state.

Mrs. Mimiko made this promise at the official launching and commissioning of a newly completed Adolescent and Youth Friendly Hea‎lth Centre in Akure, Ondo State Capital.

The health facility, which is located at the premises of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, is an initiative of the state government to guarantee qualitative health care services to all young people in the State.

The centre is planned to offer integrated services in four core areas namely: clinical preventive services, community-based outreaches, treatment and curative services, as well as referral services.

The Governor’s wife emphasized the importance of the well being of the younger generation, as the youths and adolescents constitute about 30 per cent of the state’s population, adding that they hold the peace and joy of parents and the entire society.

While addressing the gathering, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, said the health facility is a well-being clinic, as it is meant to serve people who are not sick, but want to remain in good health.

He urged all parents and guardians to pay adequate attention to the young ones, in order to prevent them from engaging in anti-social behaviours that can have adverse effects on their well-being.

Ondo Task Force Tackles Fake Drugs Sales

drugs in ondoMembers of the Ondo State Task Force against Counterfeit and Substandard Drugs have launched actions against the sale and consumption of fake and counterfeit drugs in the State.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, who led the team to some pharmacies and patent medicine stores in Akure, the State Capital, said the government was out to ensure that all the drugs sold in the state were of standard quality.

The team visited pharmacies and patent medicine stores in the city with a Truscan Machine to test the quality and originality of the drugs being sold to the members of the public.

The team visited the pharmacy of the State Specialist Hospital, where all the drugs tested passed, indicating they were of standard quality.

The test was carried out on antimalarial, antibiotics and analgesics.

Dr. Adeyanju explained that the operators of pharmacies visited that had drugs that failed the test had been directed to remove the drugs from stock. According to him, further tests would be carried out on them.

He warned that any pharmacy or patent medicine store found selling illicit drugs would be arrested and their premises shut.

On his part, the State Coordinator of the National Agency for Foods Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Wole Ojo, noted that “any drug that fails the test will be mopped up and destroyed by the agency”, adding that those selling such drugs will be surcharged.

According to him, the crusade has started in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of the State and it would be taken to all the towns and ‎villages across the state.

One of the stores visited for inspection was shut down by NAFDAC for selling injection equipment without due authorisation.

Gunmen Abduct CAN Executive Member

GunmanGunmen suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted the Executive Secretary of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN),  Mr Michael Adewunmi, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

His black Toyota Lexus SUV in which he was abducted was found abandoned with the four doors opened.

The kidnappers were also said to have taken away his Ipad and mobile phones.

The victim’s vehicle, with number plate “ONDO ANG 149 AA”, was reportedly discovered by men of the Ondo State Police Command and taken to the Ijapo Police Station in Akure.

Reports gathered revealed that the abductors were yet to make any contact with the family of the victim.

When reached on the telephone for comments, the spokesman for the State Police Command, Mr Wole Ogodo, said the Command had commenced investigations on the matter and would soon rescue the victim.
