5,000 PDP Members Dump Party In Niger State

Niger State, PDP MembersBarely two weeks after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had its local government congress nationwide, over 5,000 members have dumped the party owing to discrepancies in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

Lamenting the level of favouritism and godfatherism experienced during the congress, the leader of the group, Dr. Jibrin Datti Balarebe, said that the process was manipulated by the party leadership to favour prefered candidates.

Balarebe said during a press briefing in Minna that the recent development in the party particularly masterminded by the outgone LGA Chairman, Shehu Aliyu Paiko, is capable of destroying the party both at local and state level.

While disclosing that they started as a pressure group, Balarebe said “During the last congress of the PDP in Chanchaga LGA, the attitude of those at the helm of affairs showed that the party has not learnt from its previous mistakes which led to the failure of the party to win the 2015 general elections.

“In view of this, we, over 5,000 in number have decided to leave the party because we cannot be part of continued failure when we have all that it takes to succeed and win elections come 2019.

“Before this decision, all efforts to see that these anomalies are corrected failed despite the intervention of the State Exco and other party leaders under the leadership of former Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Kure.”

He further disclosed that the group has not decided whether to join any other party at the moment.

He said, “Doors are opened for dialogue and subsequent resolution in as much as we vehemently reject the outcome of the congress which was heavily manipulated by some individuals.”

Balarebe warned that out of the over 7,000 members in Chanchaga, 5,000 have dumped the PDP and the same action would be replicated in the remaining 24 LGAs.

“We don’t sympathise with the PDP anymore, if we have to consider reconciliation, they must nullify the LGA congress,” he said.

PDP Holds Ward Congresses Across States, Rivers Exercise Marred

PDPThe People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has held ward congresses across most states of the nation.

The exercise was held towards identifying and accrediting delegates who will determine who picks party’s ticket at the different congresses.

In Bayelsa State, President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife were not left out in the process as they travelled to their ward to partake in the exercise.

In Edo State, PDP members joined their counterparts in other states to elect Ad Hoc delegates who would represent the various wards at the party’s primaries scheduled to hold within the month.

The exercise which took place simultaneously in all political wards of the state was in line with the directive of the national leadership of the party.

At the end of the exercise, three delegates were either elected or adopted as consensus candidates from each ward of the state.

The situation in Rivers State was slightly different from some other states, as factions of the party have shown displeasure with the manner in which the exercise was conducted.

The grievance of the faction is that most delegates were shut out of the exercise. Some of them, they claimed, are governorship aspirants.

The aggrieved faction, while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, asked the national arm of the PDP to wade in the matter to avoid further division in the party.

President Jonathan has called on party members to elect leaders of proven quality that would serve the people diligently, urging the delegates not to allow themselves to be used and influenced by politicians with bad and ulterior motives.

2015 Elections: Wait for your turn, Tukur tells opposition parties

If the saying of the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is anything to go by, then the opposition political parties would have to work very hard, to establish firm grip at the Federal level.

PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur told journalists in Abuja that his party is not done yet with providing leadership at the national level.

He also speaks about the party’s plans for 2015 and to make this claim a reality, the national chairman took a giant stride as he decided to re-engineer the wheel of progress of the leading party in Nigeria and part of his reform was to appeal to aggrieved members of the party who defected to other political parties to return as he promised prospective returnees a special arrangement by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP that will assign special roles to them in the party’s reform agenda.

He said the party has been leading the country since 1999 and it is not ready to relinquish power to any opposition party for now so he advised that the party should remain indivisible and indissoluble as he pleaded to members who are aggrieved and left the party for opposition parties to re-join the ruling party so as to be part of the re-building process of Nigeria as all hands are needed to do so.

The party chairman said he accepted to lead the party not to acquire fame or fortune, but to give back to Nigeria much of what the country had offered him.

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur who spoke to newsmen at his Abuja residence during the occasion of his 77th birthday, called on party members and the Nigerian people to support the transformation agenda of the Jonathan administration.

He said the PDP would soon engage its founding fathers, elders and other stakeholders in the task of rebuilding the party through reconciliation, based on equity and justice.

The PDP chair ruled out automatic tickets for members in the 2015 general elections, insisting that merit, record of performance and credibility of political office seekers would be the yardstick for determining access to power at all levels.

The National Chairman also promised that PDP will reclaim the states it lost in previous polls in the 2015 general elections.
