Secondus Leads PDP Govs To Visit Ortom

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Uche Secondus, on Wednesday, led some PDP governors on a visit to Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.

The PDP governors include Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State; Darius Ishaku of Taraba; and Dickson Seriake of Bayelsa on the visit.

Some lawmakers including Ben Murray-Bruce were also part of the team that visited the governor.

The PDP governors during the visit reassured Ortom of the support of the party.

Secondus noted that the visit to Governor Ortom was necessary due ‘his political travail’ since he defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.

Governor Ortom last week announced his defection from the APC to PDP. Few days after, APC lawmakers in the Benue State House of Assembly served him with an impeachment notice.

Ortom has since described this as

PDP National Chairman Appoints Amori As Political Adviser

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus has appointed Senator Ighoyota Amori as Political Adviser.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the appointment takes effect from January 2018.

Senator Amori, who represented Delta Central in the Senate had served as Political Adviser two past governors of Delta State as well as Special Adviser on Reconciliation and Conflict Management to two past National Chairmen of the PDP, the latest being the immediate past National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

He has over the years distinguished himself as a patriot and statesman who is fervently committed to the stability of not only the PDP but also the nation at large.

He is therefore expected to bring to bear his wealth of experience and goodwill in building a strong front for the task ahead.

Kaduna PDP Divided Over Markafi, Sheriff

PDP Leadership: Appeal Court Reserves Judgement In Makarfi, Sheriff CaseThere seems to be a crack in the Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its members in the state seem to be divided on who to support between the National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, and Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee.

Members of the state working committee have unanimously thrown their support behind Senator Makarfi and described the Court of Appeal judgement that reinstated Senator Sheriff as a ‘miscarriage of justice’.

The committee gave the disapproval alongside other stakeholders of the party during a meeting held at the PDP secretariat in Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria.

Kaduna State PDP Chairman and a former Minister of Aviation, Hassan Hyat, told reporters that pending the outcome of the Supreme Court judgement, members in the state will pitch their tent with the Makarfi led committee.

“We support the position of the PDP stakeholders at the national level that the national convention of the party held in Port Harcourt on the 21st of May, 2016 actually dissolved the then National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee of the party, and replaced the National Working Committee with a 7-member National Caretaker Committee under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Makarfi as chairman and Senator Ben Obi as secretary to run the party and organise an elective national convention as soon as practicable.

“We stand by the judgement of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt which endorsed the decision of the 21st May, 2016 National Convention.

“We also view the split decision of the two justices of the Court of Appeal that sat in Port Harcourt on 17th February, 2017 which nullified the decision of the national convention of 21st May, 2017 and reinstated the Senator Sheriff National Working Committee as a miscarriage of justice and a complete negation of our party constitution”, Hyat said.

However, some members loyal to Senator Sheriff have come out openly to distance themselves from the position of the party executive in Kaduna State, saying they were not part of it.

The group, led by Senator Musa Bello, said the judgment of the Appeal Court must be respected by every member of the party, hence they are solidly behind Sheriff.

Sheriff Meets Jonathan On PDP Unity

pdpThe National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to seek how to unite the party.

After the meeting held on Monday behind closed doors in Abuja, Dr. Jonathan and Senator Sheriff told reporters that the current leadership crisis in the PDP would soon be settled.

PDP Will Become Stronger

The former president said “the ability of resolving these differences is what makes us human beings and what makes us leaders. I’ve met with sheriff and leaders of the party.

“I’ll meet with others and at the end of the day, PDP will become stronger so that we will be able to do what is expected of us as a political party”.

On his part, Senator Sheriff declared that there is only one party, and that they are working hard in ensuring that the party is united once again.

“There’s only one PDP and there is only one national chairman; so we are putting everything together to make sure the party is united.

“We are not fighting with anybody; it is not time to join issue with people; we need everybody to come back,” said the former Borno State Governor.

It is the second time in one week that leaders of the party are meeting with the former president on how to resolve the leadership crisis in the PDP.

Dr. Jonathan had hosted the leadership and Strategy Review Committee of the PDP at his home in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The visit was to inform the former president of the issues surrounding the party’s leadership and winning elections convincingly under the current leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Dr. Jonathan expressed belief that the loss of power at the centre was only temporary, insisting that the PDP would do better in the next general elections.

Ali Modu Sheriff Annuls Plateau State PDP Congress

Ali Modu Sheriff, PDP, PlateauThe former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has nullified the party’s congress in Plateau State.

The embattled PDP Chairman made the annulment when aggrieved members of the party visited him to ask for a fresh congress to elect a chairman in Plateau State.

The delegation led by a former member of the House of Representatives from the state, Mr Bitrus Kaze, alleged that the congress which was conducted in April was not credible.

In his response, Senator Sheriff told the gathering that a new committee would be inaugurated to conduct a fresh congress that would elect principal officers for the PDP in Plateau State.

In a related development, he had on Thursday set up another committee to conduct primaries for three PDP governorship candidates in Edo State, who have bought forms from his faction.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had sent the party their guidelines for the primaries, expressing preparedness to meet up with all the requirements set by the INEC for the September election.

Cripple The PDP
In a swift reaction to this, the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee condemned the move by Senator Sheriff, after Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu had emerged winner of the party’s primaries held on Monday.

MakarfiThey accused him of working with the enemies of the PDP to completely cripple the party in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The committee insisted that the Edo primary election and all the processes leading to it thereof, were properly conducted, monitored and observed by the INEC.

The emergence of the two factions of the PDP is a fall out of the party’s Governors Forum meeting where some leaders of the party removed Senator Sheriff and set up a caretaker committee.

However, the embattled Chairman told reporters when he was refused entrance into the PDP National Secretariat that he remained the chairman of the party until 2018.

PDP Governors Insist Modu Sheriff Is Not Party Chairman

PDP-GovernorsArising from a meeting on Thursday, the PDP Governors Forum has insisted that it would not recognise Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman of the party.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP had commenced series of meetings aimed at resolving the internal crisis that threatens the unity of the party.

One of such talk sessions is that comprising the governors and Board of Trustee members held at the Ondo State governors lodge in Abuja, after supporters of the anti and pro Ali Modu Sheriff group besieged the party’s secretariat.

They also explained why they withdrew their support for Senator Sheriff at the aborted Port Harcourt convention after giving him the assurance that he had their support.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, who was once a vocal supporter of Mr Sheriff’s ambition of becoming the party’s substantive chairman, told Channels Television that they were against “anything that will make Sheriff turn such an opportunity into telling us that he wants to become President of Nigeria”.

“After caretaker, we intend to make sure we support you to be substantive chairman and you’re promising people everywhere that they should come and be your vice president, I cant be part of it,” he said.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, also told journalists that the crisis in the party is fueled by forces outside the party.

For a record second time, the gate of the National Secretariat of the PDP was locked down after supporters of the two contending parties to the leadership of the party surrounded the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sen. Walid jubril, after receiving the key, said that the secretariat would remain locked until the issues are resolved.

The decision of the BOT Chairman to lock down the national secretariat was not enough to calm the protesters, as angry protesters forced their way into the premises just moments later.

Stakeholders Meet To Resolve PDP Crisis

Anambra PDPThe National Assembly caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and state governors of the party are meeting in Abuja to address the latest developments in the party.

The meeting is expected to look at ways of resolving the tussle for leadership in the PDP.

The Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the party had accused the party’s former National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, of working in connivance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy the PDP.Ali Modu Sheriff

Spokesperson for the Caretaker Committee, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, told journalists at a press conference in Abuja that the party intelligence reports confirmed that the embattled Chairman of the party was working for the APC to disorganise the PDP ahead of the Edo State elections.

In a swift reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to Ali-Modu Sheriff, Mr Inuwa Bwala, described the accusations as baseless, saying that time would tell who was being sponsored by forces outside the PDP with the sole objective of destroying the party.

The APC on the flip side also described the allegation as baseless, saying the PDP was suffering from its past misdeeds.

PDP BoT, Mantu Group Endorse Caretaker Committee

PDP BoTThe Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  has endorsed the caretaker committee set up by the party’s convention last Saturday in the Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt.

Also, another faction of the party, known as the concerned stakeholders group, which held a parallel convention in Abuja same day, has teamed up with the PDP caretaker committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Both the BOT and the factional group, led by Ibrahim Mantu, made this known at the end of their peace meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

They also directed their members to withdraw pending cases from the courts and set up a committee to meet former acting National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff.

Thursday’s meeting followed counter court orders which restrained the factional leaders, Senators Sheriff and Markafi from assuming the mantle of leadership of the party.

In one case, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt granted an interim injunction restraining Senator Sheriff and former secretary, Professor Adewale Oladipo from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

But in a counter ruling, a Federal High Court in Lagos declared as invalid, the Makarfi-led caretaker committee constituted to take over the affairs of the PDP.

Reports say that the meeting has been convened to put a halt to the crisis that the party is presently facing.

After briefly inter-facing with both parties, Ali Modu Sheriff, Ahmed Makarfi and Ben Obi were asked to excuse the BoT.

Thursday’s meeting comes after counter court orders restrained the parallel leaders from assuming the mantle of leadership of the party.

In one case, a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt granted an interim injunction restraining the immediate past National Chairman and National Secretary of the PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff and Professor Adewale Oladipo, from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

Anambra PDP Raises Alarm Over Non-Conduct Of Ward Congress

Anambra PDPThe leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has called for a fresh conduct of the ward congress.

This comes as no congress was held anywhere in the 326 wards of the state as scheduled.

Addressing reporters at the PDP secretariat in Awka, the State Chairman of the party, Mr Ejike Oguebego, said that members of the party were mobilised and waited for the congress committee led by Mr Ladi Edun, for a proper conduct of the ward congress but to no avail.

He joined other members of the state executive council to condemn the conduct of the congress by the committee chairman and his team, who he said failed in their duty to carry out the assignment entrusted into their hands with no justifiable reason.

Mr Oguebego called for a fresh election to afford the party members choose their ward executives.

The party’s legal adviser, Mr Chuks Okoye, cited the provisions of the party guideline for the conduct of congresses, which stipulates that the congress committee must present themselves to the appropriate executive of the state who will assist in providing venues for the ward congress.

He insisted that the unavailability of the congress committee nullified the entire exercise.

Mr Okoye added that some of the embittered committee members had already submitted a petition to the PDP National Chairman, informing him of the situation

Members of the party say they are waiting to hear from the national secretariat to act immediately and restore confidence in the minds of the party faithful through the conduct of a credible and proper ward congress.

PDP’s Former Ministers Demand Credible Zoning Arrangement

pdpFormer ministers in the PDP are warning the leadership of the party to adhere to the wishes of its members in the zoning and other arrangements leading up to the convention.

This comes ahead of the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in May.

Addressing journalists after a meeting that lasted for about five hours in Abuja, the Chairman of the forum, Mr Tanimu Turaki, expressed concerns over arrangements for the convention including the zoning arrangements.

He warned that if the convention is not conducted credibly and zoning arrangements done to reflect the wishes of members, the party could head for serious crisis.

“We considered extensively and reaffirmed our earlier position regarding the leadership of the party on the principle that while the minority will have their say, the majority will quite understandably have their way.

“The forum reiterates its stand that the party’s leadership should conduct transparent and credible congresses and national convention.

“We have also recognized serious concerns over the arrangements and (are) unequivocal that should the convention not produce officers of the party that reflect the will of the people, it will portend continued disaster for the party in popular national elections,” he said.

On the issue of the reported zoning of the national chairmanship of the party to the northeast, he said that members of the forum who are also in the PDP Zoning Committee have revealed that no position has been zoned to any geopolitical zone yet.

PDP Governors, BoT Support Sheriff’s Leadership

PDPThere appears to be a new twist in the crisis rocking the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has switched lanes and expressed support for the newly appointed National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

Similarly, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, addressed reporters on Tuesday after a closed door meeting of some of the party’s leaders.

Governor Mimiko explained that the PDP remains united despite conflicting reports that emerged over the last three days.

He insisted that Ali Modu Sheriff remains the party’s National Chairman until a national convention is held within a few weeks.

This is coming after former Ministers of the PDP had in a meeting, rejected Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the Chairman of Nigeria’s front line opposition party.

The meeting is sequel to series of controversies that have trailed the emergence of the new PDP National Chairman who resumed office on Monday.
