Fayose’s Accounts: PDP Hails Judiciary For ‘Curbing EFCC Impunity’

I Won't Join APC For Ekiti 2018 Poll, Fayose InsistsThe faction of the Mr Ahmed Makarfi Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has lauded Nigeria’s judiciary for curbing what it described as the ‘impunity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’ by unfreezing the accounts of Governor Ayodele Fayose in Zenith Bank PLC.

The party, which forecloses the possibility of changing its nomenclature ahead of the 2019 general elections, disclosed its readiness to enter into merger with other like-minded political associations in the country to be able to dislodge the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential poll.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday ordered the EFCC and the Zenith Bank to unfreeze Mr Fayose’s accounts, which had earlier been restricted for allegedly containing a lodgement of 2.99 billion Naira being part of the 4.9 billion Naira arms fund received from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

The party’s spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who spoke in Ise Ekiti during a scholarship scheme instituted by the Ex-Minister of State for Works, said but for Judiciary, those conferred with constitutional immunity would have allegedly been clamped into jail by the APC-led federal government, just in a bid to muzzle the opposition.

Adeyeye said: “We in the PDP family are particularly happy with the judgement, because it will help in curbing the reign of impunity under President Buhari’s government.

“The EFCC acted against Governor Fayose as if it was not a creation of the constitution. It acted lawlessly and as if individual’s rights to own an account as guaranteed by the 1999 constitution no longer exists.

“We really applaud the role of judiciary in the way it has been adjudicating on some political issues. But for their roles, the nation will by now be witnessing a full blown dictatorship”.

Mr Adeyeye aid that the PDP was well prepared to defeat the APC in the forthcoming 2019 elections, describing the party(PDP) as the strongest party in African continent.

The party’s spokesman accused the APC of destroying the fortunes of the country since President Buhari came on board in 2015 and plunged the people into unwarranted economic recession.

“The PDP is well prepared for the task ahead, particularly for 2019. We are not ruling out the possibility of merging with other political parties, because there could be merger which our party can be part of.

“As we speak now, the PDP remains the strongest party in Nigeria and Africa. We are now more united than ever.

“All the serving and former governors, members of the National Assembly, all the State chairmen of the party are now on one side. They are all supporting Alhaji Makarfi caretaker committee.

“The factional case pending in the court of Appeal will soon be
settled and the PDP will thereafter become a real united party that
can withstand any election. Only few ones are rebellious who allowed themselves to be used by the ruling government ,” he stated.

The PDP spokesman further predicted that there would soon be a huge implosion in APC that would consume the party, predicating this on the conflicting and like-minded political ideology of the members of the party.

“Half of the APC members are now aggrieved. They have been frustrated and if you see the kind of overtures they are making to us, you will be marveled,” he added.

OndoDecides: PDP Presents Early Observations In Conduct Of Election

ondo-election-ondodecidesThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has presented series of what it called ‘early observations’ from the conduct of the Ondo State governorship election.

The ruling party in the state claims that there are several irregularities and poor preparations on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as men and officers of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies.

A statement by the party’s spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, said that voters in several parts of the State had suffered several incidents of Card Reader failures.

“Despite the fact that INEC owns more than xxx units of Card Readers, in several locations there are no back up Card Readers. As such, many voters are already being deprived of the right to cast a vote for the candidate of their choice,” the statement read.

‘Plots To Rig’

Explaining further, the party claimed that the Polling Unit of Governor Olusegun Mimiko suffered Card Reader failure at his Polling Unit – Ward 7 Unit 20 Ondo West Local Government Area – that has prevented voters from casting their votes.

It said: “In Ward 2 of Akure South Local Government Area, Tunji Light-Ariyo, a known Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was recorded campaigning and canvassing for votes for the APC candidate – Mr Rotimi Akeredolu – at PUs 28, 29, and 30 in spite of the prohibition of such actions by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

“The recording of this event also clearly show several police officers and men of other security agencies standing by and doing nothing while this was going on,” the party further alleged.

According to the PDP the video shows that the policemen were providing security cover for him.

The party pointed out that the incidents were violations of the law and evidence of the plots to rig the elections in favour of Mr Akeredolu.

“We reiterate our earlier warnings that we will not stand by and watch anyone tamper with the democratic process and subvert the will of the Ondo people,” the PDP added.

Electorates in the state are voting in the governorship election to elect among 28 contestants a successor for incumbent Governor Mimiko.

The PDP and its candidate, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, had on Thursday called for the postponement of the election to enable their candidate prepare campaign for the election, but the INEC said it had made everything needed for the election ready and would go ahead with the election.

Linking Me With Niger Delta Avengers Is Devilish, Metuh Says

Metuh on Niger Delta Avengers relationship claimsThe embattled former spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olisa Metuh, has denied allegations that he has a relationship with the Niger Delta Avengers, a militant group in Nigeria’s southern region that has vandalised oil facilities of different companies in the oil rich region.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Metuh disassociated himself from the activities of the group, saying that the allegation was wicked, cruel and devilish.

He said his statement was in response to what he called false and misleading report circulating in a section of the media, heinously listing him as one of the sympathisers of the Niger-Delta Avengers.

“Ordinarily, I would not have responded to this given that I have since chosen to conduct my affairs with the decency and comportment of someone involved in a well-celebrated trial and with a severe spinal problem.

“I am also not unaware of the series of false reports against my person in the past few months.

“However, on this occasion I have chosen to respond, as this particularly borders on matters affecting national security.

“Indeed, I believe this is a wicked, cruel and devilish plot to link me with such activities and at this very time, especially as the claim is out rightly false.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I hereby state categorically that I do not have any relationship or association whatsoever either as a sympathiser or sponsor of any militant group, including the Avengers,” Mr Metuh stated.

He further stressed his decision not to be drawn into any controversy at this time, saying: “It is pertinent that I reiterate that my only preoccupation now remains matters concerning my health and extant court trial as I continue to conduct my affairs with dignity and single-mindedness”.

The former PDP spokesman also asked the Federal Government and security agencies to immediately investigate and arrest one Cynthia Whyte, who he claimed purportedly circulated the report.

“Ensure that you get to the root of this matter.

“This is a security issue and nobody should be allowed to play politics with it,” he stressed.

Mr Metuh is standing trial for on allegations of financial crimes preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Witness Confesses Receiving 25m Naira From Metuh

MetuhA seventh witness says that he received the sum of 25 million Naira from the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olisa Metuh, for image laundering.

Testifying in the case of criminal diversion of 400 million Naira preferred against Mr Metuh by the Federal Government, Mr Abah Dabo said that he received the said sum of money from the PDP Spokesman to manage the party and former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Dabo, who was also a former Political Adviser to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, told the court on Thursday that the money he received from Metuh on December 16, 2014 was meant for countering the negative publicity being received by President Jonathan and the PDP from the then opposition party.

He explained that he used part of the money given to him to pay for an office accommodation in Maitama district of Abuja and engaged some youths to manage a website known as ‘Whatsapp Naija’.

The witness revealed that he refunded the 25 million Naira to the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission when he read in the media that the money was part of the fund that Metuh received from the office of the National Security Adviser.

Under cross examination from the Defence lawyers, Ifedayo Adedipe and Ben Nwosu, the witness maintained that he did not know the source of funds from which the PDP spokesman paid him for his services, adding that he never asked Mr Metuh for his source of funding.

The lawyers stressed further that they were not bothered by the quality of evidence given by the seventh prosecution witness.

The court subsequently fixed February 9 for further hearing on the trial of the PDP spokesman.

Presidency Has No Hand In EFCC Affairs – Information Minister

EFCCThe Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has no hands in the way the EFCC carries out its functions.

Mr Mohammed disclosed this on Wednesday to State House correspondents in Abuja while responding to reactions trialling Mr Olisa Metuh’s arrest by the EFCC.

The Minister challenged the media to carry out investigations on such reports to authenticate whether such allegations are true or false.

“I think the first point to make is that this government is not micro-managing any of the anti-graft agencies. I know for a fact that they don’t contact the President or anybody before they do their job.

“I think the media also has to do more than they are doing right now, they should investigate these allegations and also make their independent judgment about it.

“Honestly, if the EFCC or ICPC says that they are able to trace certain amount of money to my account, I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to also ask for proof; do your investigation.

“I can assure you that this government, no functionary in government micromanages or directs the EFCC or ICPC on who to arrest and who not to arrest”, he said.

This is coming after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olisa Metuh, on Tuesday morning.

According to a statement, officials of the anti-graft agency told the opposition party spokesman that he was being invited on a friendly note to answer questions at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja.

The PDP subsequently released a statement, signed by its National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, that the arrest of Mr Metuh was part of a larger script by the government to ensure that the party’s wings were finally clipped.

The party said that it was not surprised by the arrest because according to them, it came after series of threats on the PDP spokesperson.

“The excesses of security agencies under this government, especially the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) and the EFCC, in abridging the human rights of PDP members have become worrisome and a threat to our democratic evolution,” the statement read.

PDP Reacts To Metuh’s Arrest

PDP National Secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo,

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised an alarm over the arrest of its spokesperson, Mr Olisa Metuh.

The party, in a statement by its National Secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo, said that the arrest of Mr Metuh, based on an intelligence the party claims it got, is part of a larger script by the government to ensure that PDP’s wings are finally clipped.

Professor Oladipo added that the effort was part of a mission of the APC-led government to install a dictatorial one-party state in the country.

The party, however, said that it is not surprised by Mr Metuh’s arrest because according to them, it came after series of threats on their party’s spokesperson.

The PDP then said that “the excesses of security agencies under this government, especially the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) and the EFCC, in abridging the human rights of PDP members have become worrisome and a threat to our democratic evolution.”

The party went further to say that it was “aware of top directives to break Chief Metuh and if possible poison him during his detention by the EFCC”.

The PDP alleged that Mr Metuh has, since his arrest at about 10AM on Tuesday morning, been kept incommunicado, with his lawyers denied access to him.

The opposition party alleged that the arrest of its spokesperson is the last straw that may break Nigeria’s democracy.

The party then forewarned the Federal Government and its agencies to save the nation’s democracy and release its National Publicity Secretary.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday arrested the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, but is yet to disclose the reasons behind the arrest.

Mr Metuh, had several days ago, released statements on alleged threat on him because of his “efforts at criticising the ruling party and the actions of the government”.

He said that on account of information available to him, he had cause to believe that the Federal Government was desperate and might have finalised plans to silence him.

EFCC Arrests PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh

metuhThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olisa Metuh.

A statement issued by the Special Assistant to Mr Metuh stated that he was arrested at his home by four officials of the EFCC on Tuesday morning at about 10:00AM and was taken away in an unmarked white Hiace bus.

The statement added that the officials told the opposition party spokesman that he was being invited on a friendly note to answer questions at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

A PDP official told Channels Television that efforts by Mr Metuh’s aides and lawyers to reach him has proved abortive since he was taken into custody.

Details regarding his arrest remains unclear as the EFCC is yet to disclose the reasons behind the invitation.

Mr Metuh, had several days ago, released statements on alleged threat on him because of his “efforts at criticising the ruling party and the actions of the government”.

He said that on account of information available to him, he had cause to believe that the Federal Government was desperate and might have finalised plans to silence him.

President Buhari Will Always Tell Nigerians The Truth – Adesina

BuhariThe Presidency says all attempts by PDP spokesman, Olisah Metuh and others to distract President Buhari from the job he has been elected to do will fail.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, was reacting to a statement credited to the PDP man, alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari is “demarketing Nigeria”.

Adesina said, “President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity, incorruptibility and plain-speaking which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership to that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration.

“The President will not, in the guise of “marketing” the country, refrain from telling Nigerians and the world, the emerging truths about the abject state in which years of plundering by a PDP leadership has left the Nigerian treasury and economy.

“President Buhari will not in the name of “marketing” or “attracting” investors, follow in the footsteps of the ousted PDP Administration and its discredited officials who shamelessly lied to Nigerians and the world about the buoyancy and vibrancy of an economy they had bled dry for personal gain, when it was very obvious to the discerning, that the Nigerian economy was headed for serious trouble.”

He accused Mr. Metuh of unjustly denigrating the President who continues to strive with all his might to alleviate and reverse the harm done to the nation by PDP, instead of showing remorsefulness and giving support for President Buhari’s efforts to revamp the national economy.

“Mr. Metuh’s antics are futile. President Buhari cannot be distracted by a broken record. If the PDP spokesman ever has serious matters to bring to our attention, we will be prepared to listen,” Mr Adesina concluded.

Stop Whining And Rebrand, APC Tells PDP

APCThe All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the communique issued by the PDP after its national caucus’ meeting, which ended close to midnight on Thursday.

The APC says the PDP statement on the so-called political developments in the nation is a rehash of the opposition party’s infantile whining which will not save it from going down unless it rebrands urgently.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the APC said that the PDP cannot continue to do things in its trademark old ways and expect a different result.

“It is time for the PDP to take a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and change everything that is ugly about the party, instead of wasting its energy and time on irrelevancies,” the party said, adding that the PDP was the architect of its own fall from power.

“The days of winning elections with the aid of slush funds, brigandage, deceit and rigging are gone forever, hence the PDP must return to the drawing board to fashion out decent and empirical ways of repackaging and selling itself to Nigerians, just like the opposition did when they decided to come together.

“Instead of a blanket and unsubstantiated accusation against the judiciary over the election petition tribunal rulings in Rivers and Akwa Ibom, the PDP would have shown itself to be a serious party if it had provided statistics on how many of the cases filed at the various election petition tribunals nationwide, after the 2015 elections, have so far been decided in favour of the PDP and the APC, so that Nigerians can see whether the PDP has not won any single petition or whether all the cases have been won by the APC.

”The PDP has forgotten that the same judiciary that it is wilfully castigating today had decided many election petitions in favour of the party and against the APC, whether at the Governorship, National Assembly or State Assembly levels, and the ruling party has not opted to bring the whole house crashing down on everyone just because of that.

”Going down the memory lane, when the PDP took itself to court in 2007 over the Governorship election in Rivers, the same judiciary that has now become an apparition to the PDP awarded the Governorship to a candidate who never even featured on the ballot because the party crookedly substituted his name. Then, the PDP did not see the judiciary as being used by the then PDP Administration, neither did the opposition castigate the judiciary,” it said.

APC admonished the PDP to engage in strategic thinking that could propel the party forward, rather than continue to be nostalgic about its past, as the 16 years of the PDP are nothing to celebrate.

Stating that President Muhammadu Buhari has brought sanity to governance in spite of the PDP’s attempts to distract him, the ruling party said that the PDP’s “ceaseless and ill-advised attack on the judiciary, the endless put-down of government agencies and the demonization of everyone but itself would fetch the party nothing but political grief”.

”Our parting word for the PDP; stop throwing juvenile tantrums against everyone, especially the judiciary. Stop wasting your energy on frivolous accusations. Learn how to communicate your thoughts to Nigerians in a more civilized way and put your shoulder to the wheel if you want to reincarnate as a force to be reckoned with in our country’s political firmament,” APC said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had criticised the recent tribunal judgment on Rivers State governorship election, accusing the Department for State Services of interference.

Shortly after the PDP national caucus’ meeting, the party’s spokesman, Mr Olisa Metuh, told reporters that there was serious cause for concern in the nation’s political environment, especially as it concerns the survival of the nation’s democracy.

He wondered why the tribunal was able to deliver a judgement within 24 hours “in a case that had nearly 100 witnesses, 1,000 pieces of documentary evidences and nine written addresses, each not less than 40 pages,” raising concerns about the judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal.

PDP Raises Issues Of Interference In Rivers Governorship Election Judgment

Olisa-MetuhThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the recent Tribunal judgment on Rivers State governorship election, accusing the Department for State Services of interference.

Shortly after the PDP national caucus’ meeting, which ended close to midnight on Thursday, the party’s spokesman, Mr Olisa Metuh, told reporters that there was serious cause for concern in the nation’s political environment, especially as it concerns the survival of the nation’s democracy.

He said that the National caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party carefully reviewed the political development in the nation’s polity before it came out with the resolution.

“For emphasis, the PDP and Nigerians wonder why it was necessary to interfere with the composition of the Rivers State Governorship Tribunal and to harass resident electoral commissioner severally to the extent that the Tribunal itself was able to deliver a judgement within 24 hours in a case that had nearly 100 witnesses, 1,000 pieces of documentary evidences and nine written addresses, each not less than 40 pages,” he said, raising concerns about the judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal.

“Pretentious War”

The spokesman for the PDP said that the outcome of the decision, “in view of a rather interesting history of the case”, indicated that the Nigerian people and the PDP were victims of the APC-led government.

Making comments about the walk out staged by the Senators of the PDP during the confirmation of the former Governor of Rivers State, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, on Thursay, Mr Metuh said it was a decision that showed the party’s stand against corruption.

“We salute the courage and unity of purpose of our Senators, especially as demonstrated in the Senate chambers today in their collective stand against impunity and corruption in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.”

He said that the action of the APC Senators during the confirmation plenary at the Senate had put a dent on the ruling party’s “pretentious war against corruption”.

Lagos PDP Raises Alarm, Alleges APC Plans To Rig Election

Lagos PDPThe Lagos State chapter of PDP has raised an alarm that the APC has devised plans to rig the Lagos governorship election and even resort to violence if not declared winner of the election.

According to the Lagos PDP Spokesman, Taofik Gani, the party’s intelligence report revealed that the APC has recruited thugs and some persons to impersonate youth corpers, security agents and INEC staff in order to manipulate the elections in favour of the APC.

“These persons will wear the uniforms of youth corpers, various security agents and be present as INEC electoral officers.

“The APC has concluded plans to deploy these impersonators to identified polling units where the official INEC officers, security agents and youth corpers will be compromised to concede their functions.

“Some official officers for the elections will not even appear at their units to allow the impersonators function as electoral officers,” he said.

The Lagos PDP has called on INEC, security agencies and the NYSC to paste the names of the officers for each polling unit at the said polling units to prevent the planned impersonation.

“As a party, we have trained our agents to be vigilant and any manipulation at polling units or at any stage of the process shall be repelled.”

The party has also announced the declaration of support by 13 political parties and other groups.

“In the last four days, we have received 13 political parties and many groups who have pledged their supports for PDP in the coming elections. Of significance is the declaration of support by the Lovers of Raji Fashola (LORAF),” Mr Gani added.
