Kaduna APC Passes Vote of Confidence On Buhari, El-Rufai

APC National Chairman Assures Citizens Of Stable LeadershipThe enlarged caucus of the All Progressive Congress (APC), in Kaduna state, has passed a vote of confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai for their policy directions and style of governance.

These were parts of resolutions reached at the end of a meeting of the state caucus, held in the state capital.

The essence of the meeting was to appraise the performance of the APC led administration in delivering good governance to the people in the state, and discuss issues facing the party and how to move it forward.

The caucus dismissed insinuations that there was division among its members, but insisted that they are united and therefore won’t be distracted by those who hide under guise of criticism to pull down the APC government in the state.

In attendance at the meeting are all the major stakeholders of the party in the state including members of the state exco of the party, Governor El-Rufai and his deputy, Bala Bantex, Speaker of the Kaduna state House of Assembly, Aminu Shagali, the Senator representing Kaduna North, Otman Hunkuyi, National Assembly Members as well as local government and ward executives among others.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, governor El-Rufai’s Special Adviser on Political Matters and Inter Governmental relations, Uba Sani, maintained that the era of paying or rewarding blackmailers is over in the state, saying the Kaduna APC has no division or faction.

Sani, stressed that the present government under governor El-Rufai, is transforming the state and not to share money to politicians who criticize or blackmail for settlements.

“Kaduna state APC caucus meeting was well attended by governor Nasir El-Rufai, Deputy governor, Bala Yusuf Bantex, Senator representing Kaduna North zone, Suleiman Hunkuyi, the entire State House of Assembly leadership and members.

“All members of the caucus are here. We discussed the progress of our party and all our discussions went well.

“In Kaduna state, we have only one APC, we discussed on how to reposition the party for service delivery to the people of Kaduna State”, Sani expressed.

The stakeholders, including Speaker of Kaduna state House of Assembly, Aminu Shagali, said that they would remain united and ensure that the APC emerges victorious in the forthcoming local government election slated for July 2017.

They also commended governor El-Rufai for his memo to President Buhari which they note was done in good faith and aimed at moving the nation forward.

“Our elders also gave us useful suggestions; we don’t have any faction or division in Kaduna State APC.

“Our party leadership at ward level to state is intact, so we don’t have faction. You know this government does not settle or pay people for settlements. We are not going to settle anybody who disagrees or criticize the government.

“The governor has told us clearly and he was elected to develop Kaduna State and not to share money. In Kaduna State, even a blind man knows that there is transformation going on in the state”.

With four months to the local government election in the state, stakeholders at this meeting said they would not be distracted by any group whose interest would be to cause crisis in the party.

Tunde Bakare Calls For Restructuring Of Nigeria

Tunde Bakare, NigeriaThe Senior Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, has joined the call for the restructuring of Nigeria’s federalism.

He made the call during a church service, in which he delivered a ‘state of the nation’ address.

The former vice-presidential candidate said that it has become important, more than ever, to create a system whereby states of the federation can be independent.

Bakare began by reviewing his 2016 forecast, which he reminded the church, came to pass, before making his 2017 forecast, anticipating a better year.

“Years from now, generations yet unborn will point to this year as a turning point for the Nigerian nation,” he said.

He then spoke on the need to reduce the 36 states of the federation, into the 6 geo-political zones; a move he believes would make the states healthier and more financially robust.

“These 36 states overwhelmingly sustained by allocations from Abuja cannot guarantee functional infrastructure such as world class roads, railways, airports, housing and urban development,” he said.

In further justifying his recommendations, he said: “We must restructure to correct the flaws in our federal system. A federated state is defined as a territorial and constitutional community forming part of a federal union.

“In a true federal system, previously sovereign states agree to confer their individual sovereignties on a central government.

“In other words, the states create the federal government, as was the case with the original 13 American colonies. In Nigeria, the federal government creates the states.”

Support For President

Pastor Bakare also said that the President is on course with his anti-corruption fight although he also admitted that there is need for things to be done faster.

“We have seen some progress in the anti-corruption war with the relevant agencies recently extending the fight to elements within the judiciary suspected to have been major impediments to the successful prosecution of the war”.

He disagreed with those who see President Muhamadu Buhari’s administration as clueless and called for more support for the President’s administration, as he believes in his capacity to do things in the interest of the country.

Furthermore, the pastor stated that he wants to see an immediate action on the part of the President, especially in reviewing appointments at the federal level.

Unions Call Nigeria’s Attention To Universal Health Coverage

Universal Health Coverage in NigeriaHealth unions have come together and appealed to the Federal Government to pay attention to the issues of universal health coverage in Nigeria.

The workers made the call on Monday as they marched through the streets of Abuja to mark the 2016 Universal Health Coverage Day.

They also used the medium to press home their demand, ahead of the presentation of the 2017 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly.

The civil servants urged the government to increase budget for health from the current 4.5% to the 15% adopted by the African Union 15 years ago.

A founding partner of Health System Consult, Nkata Chuku, lamented that only eight countries in Africa, excluding Nigeria, have tried to implement the Abuja Declaration of 2001 where African leaders committed to use 15% of their budget to fund the health sector.

Reality In Health Sector

Chairman of the National Immunisation Task Team, Ben Anyaele, also noted that the current dwindling national revenue was not an excuse for the government not to fund the sector adequately.

According to reports, government earmarked 221.7 billion naira out of the 6.08 trillion naira it budgeted for 2016 to fund the health sector.

Some demonstrators, however, alleged that the reality in the sector was a far cry from what government claimed to have spent.

A medical doctor, Henry Ewunonu, urged President Muhamadu Buhari to revisit the Abuja declaration before submitting the 2017 budget to the National Assembly.

Ondo Election: INEC Raises Alarm Over Security

Ondo Governorship Election, Ondo Governorship PollThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised security concern over the attitude of politicians in Ondo State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, says the actions of some aggrieved politicians in the state since the political parties conducted their primaries is capable of undermining the security of the state.

“The mindset of the political class, especially the politicians that belong to the leading political party on what it takes to win elections usually involve violence and malpractices among their followers.

“There is an urgent need for the political class to change its do or die attitude to good conduct in politics and a political caution of violence has to be done away with in our political parties.

“Our political parties must imbibe the culture of sincere eternal party democracy in the interest of the nation’s democracy,” he said.

Mr Agbaje made the remarks on Thursday at a meeting with members of the civil society groups in Abuja, to assess INEC’s preparation for the elections.

‘I Will Resign’

On the sideline of the event, the senior INEC official also explained why the electoral umpire published the name of Mr

The decision has led to massive protest in Ondo State, southwest Nigeria.

“It is the court judgement of that day that forced us to say it is this person and that means if another higher court comes with a judgement to say it is Eyitayo Jegede, (we will obey),” he noted.

Agbaje further revealed that he had made a commitment that INEC would obey the ruling of the Appeal Court if the ruling favours Jegede.

“If the Appeal Court says it is Eyitayo, the commission cannot say no, but if it does, I will resign my appointment as a commissioner,” he stated.

Meanwhile Mr Clement Nwakwo, who is a member of one of the civil groups, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, had a different view about the procedure of selecting candidates.

He advised the politicians to address issues of candidacy in-house, instead of approaching various courts for such decisions.

“I do not think that INEC has any major role to play in deciding who the candidates are (and) that’s why they have taken the decision.

“It is really for the political parties to sort out their mess for the court to really not become a theatre of deciding who candidates are, but the political party themselves making those decisions in line with their own process and the rule of law,” he recommended.

The PDP faction led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has equally been optimistic that “justice would be served” and called on all PDP faithful across Nigeria as well as the general public to remain calm and continue to support them.
