Rivers Govt, Real Madrid Sign Ratification Agreement

 

Rivers State Government and Real Madrid Football Club have signed a ratification agreement for the development of Real Madrid Academy, Port Harcourt into an international football academy.

The agreement signing ceremony took place on Monday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home of Real Madrid Football Club. The signature event held at the Presidency Reception Centre of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The signature of the ratification Protocol was executed by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and the Executive Vice President of Real Madrid Football Club Foundation , Enrique Sanchez.

In an address, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike said that the State Government is preparing the Real Madrid Academy as a veritable pathway for the empowerment of Rivers Children.

He said: “We are preparing the Real Madrid Academy as a veritable pathway for our young stars to be international football talents and for them to realise their dreams.

“We will offer them exposure, nurturing opportunities and mentorship by world renowned professionals at the Real Madrid Academy “.

He informed the Real Madrid Football Club management that the Rivers State Government has already exhibited seriousness by developing the needed infrastructure at the Real Madrid Academy in Port Harcourt.

He said that in establishing the Real Madrid Academy, the Rivers State Government took into consideration the culture and reality of the state.

“Taking the interest of our youths, the Real Madrid Academy is designed for culture and holistic programmes with a comprehensive package for the acquisition of high level knowledge in a comfortable and inspiring environment “, he said.

He added that the Real Madrid Academy will also serve as an avenue to grow the economy of Rivers State, which is the second largest in the country. Governor Wike urged officials of Real Madrid Football Club to serve as ambassadors of Rivers State to the rest of Europe.

Executive Vice President of Real Madrid Football Club Foundation , Enrique Sanchez commended the Rivers State Government for its commitment to using football as a tool to empower youths.

He assured the Rivers State Government that the Real Madrid Foundation will continue to partner with it for the training and exposure of Rivers Children .

Sanchez said that the partnership with the Rivers State Government will be expanded to include local schools in Rivers State.

The Director of Institutional Relations in Real Madrid Football Club, Mr Emilio Butragueno said that Real Madrid appreciates any authority that promotes the wellbeing of children irrespective of their background.

He thanked Governor Wike for the initiative of using football as a platform to reach out to different categories of Rivers children.

Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, Ambassador Susan Aderonke praised Governor Wike for his investments in the development of football .

“This is a legacy that Governor Wike is leaving for Nigerian Children. We are happy with his investments in developing the future of our Children “, she said.

Earlier, Director of Institutional Relations in Real Madrid Football Club, Mr Emilio Butragueno took Governor Wike and his entourage on a tour of facilities at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Area Manager of Real Madrid Foundation for Africa and Middle East, Mr Inigo Vallejo coordinated the signature event witnessed by official of Interact Sports led by their Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jihad Saade.

Wike, PDP Celebrate As Rivers Governor Wins At Tribunal

The Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal has affirmed the election of Mr Nyesom Wike in the March 9 governorship poll in the state.

It dismissed the petition filed by the governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Mr Victor Fingesi, describing it as an adventure to “discover the non-existent”.

The Tribunal also declared that in the end, nothing was discovered by the petitioner.

Shortly after the judgement delivered on Saturday, Governor Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) celebrated their victories at the Tribunal.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike in company with other PDP leaders in the state declared that nobody ran against him in the election.

“It is so painful that someone could say that no election held in Rivers State. There was nobody who ran the election against us.

“But for connection, how can anyone say he ran election against us in Rivers State?” he questioned in a statement by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu.

The governor said he would not be distracted by the antics of the opposition, adding that he would continue to promote the interest of the state.

He was exited that justice was done regarding the petition challenging his victory and thanked his legal team for their commitment.

The PDP National Chairman, Mr Uche Secondus, who was also present, congratulated the governor on his victory at the Tribunal, stressing that nobody should have challenged the election in the court.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the PDP has also congratulated Governor Wike and described the Tribunal’s verdict as an inevitable triumph of justice over forces that sought to undermine the will of the people in the state.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the party noted that Wike’s victory in the election underscored his popularity.

According to it, the governor is committed to the good of the people as evinced in the infrastructural development and empowerment of the people since he took office in 2015.

“The PDP describes Governor Wike as a highly dedicated, innovative and patriotic leader whose commitment to the wellbeing of his people and the overall stability of our nation has remained a reference point in contemporary Nigeria,” the statement said.

It added, “While commending the Tribunal for upholding justice in the matter, the party urged all its elected and appointed public officials to continue in their dedication and selfless service to the people, in line with the manifesto of the PDP and vision of our founding fathers.”

Police Nab Alleged Serial Killer In Rivers

 

An alleged notorious serial killer, Gracious David West was today arrested by the Police in Rivers State.

According to the Force, the 26-year old killer from Buguma LGA of the State, who is also a member of the Degbam cult group was arrested along East-West Road en-route to Uyo from Port Harcourt.

Commissioner of Police Rivers State, CP Mustapha Dandaura who will be briefing the media on this significant arrest on Friday, said that the suspect has since made useful statements to the Police.

Mr Dandaura further stated that investigation is on with a view to ascertaining the suspect’s motives and possible accomplices.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University, Professor Blessing Didia, has been relieved of his appointment.

A statement posted on Governor Nyesom Wike’s twitter handle said the decision was with ‘immediate effect’.

Similar, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the institution, Professor Magnus Oruwari, was relieved of his appointment.

The university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Opuenebo Owei, was appointed as the acting vice-chancellor.

Governor Wike also suspended the ongoing employment exercise at the institution.

DPR Seals Filling Stations In Rivers, Kano

 

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has sealed over 30 filling stations in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The sanction follows the engagement  in fraudulent activities  and attempting to sabotage the efforts of government in the regulation of the industry by the affected stations.

According to the DPR Zonal Operations Controller for River State, Mr Bassey Nkanga, the erring filling stations were sealed because they’ve made it a habit to tamper with their equipment.

“Before this time, we had a meeting with IPMAN and the marketers and we advised that DPR will no longer tolerate any form of illegality and attempt to cheat the public in any way,” he said.

Reacting to the closure, a motorist commended the agency for the intervention, stressing that such act would curb corruption within the system.

Speaking to Channels Television, he regretted that most filling stations do not dispense petroleum products in the right measurement.

“We buy fuel of N1,000, N2,000 and it is not complete. That is what they do everywhere and if you people continue, kudos to you. You are doing a very good job and I appreciate it,” he said.

Similarly, some fuel stations within Kano metropolis have were also sealed off after their management were found to be under delivering or operating with expired documents.

The River State Police Command has arrested a gang of armed robbers after they snatched a jeep from a Port Harcourt based women.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, the armed robbers were escaping with the vehicle and some cash when they ran into a stop and search point.

In an attempt to escape, they got engage in a gun battle and as a result, one of them was killed.

Another was arrested while the third member escaped, however, with gunshot wounds.

The vehicle was, however, recovered and has been returned to the owner.

Meanwhile, Omoni has assured residents of the command’s determination to clamp down on criminals.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has issued an ultimatum of one month to roadside mechanics, car dealers, street traders, and private taxi park operators to vacate the streets of Port Harcourt.

He gave the order at a meeting with some artisans and traders on Friday at the Government House in the state capital.

The governor explained that it was important for them to comply with the stipulated period because his administration was committed to restoring Port Harcourt to the garden city status.

“I am giving all groups one month to leave the roads, he said, adding “Within this one month, you should find alternative locations to carry out your businesses.

“By the first week of July, the state government will swing into action. Port Harcourt must be clean, whether you like it or not.”

Governor Wike noted that he convened the meeting to avoid unnecessary conflict and to negotiate the time for all the traders, mechanics and car dealers to leave the roads.

He said, “Our roads are now mechanic workshops, our roads are now markets and motor parks. There is this spirit that makes the traders and mechanics believe that you can only make money on the road; we will end that spirit.

“Your activities litter the roads. There will be consequences for mechanics using the road for their trade after the one month period. The vehicles being repaired will be seized.”

The governor warned that the state government would not allow the operation of illegal motor parks and car shops along the roads.

He said that police and other security agencies have been co-opted to serve on the implementation process.

In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Usman Belel, gave assurance that the command would work with the State government to ensure that the artisans leave the roads.

However, representatives of artisans and traders requested different timeframes to vacate the roads.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike taking the oath of office as administered by the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyaye-Laminkara, which signalled the start of his second term at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

 

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says his government will never surrender the people’s freedom to anybody or entity.

He stated this on Wednesday during his swearing-in for another term of four years at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The governor said, “We are not a conquered people and we will never surrender our freedoms to anybody or entity, whether internal or external.

“We will therefore not accept to be subjugated to a headmaster and pupil power relationship; neither will we abandon the collective interest of Rivers State for the sake of political expediency.

“We are for the rule of law, democracy and mutual respect as autonomous State entities and co-building blocks of the Nigerian federation.”

Wike whose second term begins today declared that he will always place Rivers State first in all his actions.

He also promised not to disappoint the people of the state, stressing that his administration is not in opposition to the Federal Government.

“For us, in all things, it is Rivers State first; Rivers State is the measure; Rivers State before others. This is the essence of the political mandate and burden that we will bear for the next four years and we will not disappoint you.

“We will continue to stand up for Rivers State and defend her interest, no matter the challenges or what comes at us,” he stated.

Wike took his oath of office to commence his second term in the presence of thousands of Rivers people and other prominent Nigerians.
Similarly, the Deputy Governor, Ipalibo Harry Banigo was sworn in for a second term.

Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyaye-Laminkara administered the oath of office for the governor and his deputy.

After mounting the saluting dais for the ceremonial police rituals, Wike drove in the ceremonial open roof Land Rover Utility Vehicle to exchange pleasantries with the jubilant crowd.

Wike Suspends 12 Local Government Chairmen In Rivers

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has sacked the State Commissioner of Power, Hon Shedrach Chukwu.

This is according to a statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

In his communique on Monday, Nwakaudu said the Governor directed the sacked commissioner to submit all Government Documents and Property in his possession to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power.

The sack comes a day after Governor Wike recalled the 12 Local Government Council Chairmen earlier suspended by his Administration.

In a statement on Sunday, the Governor charged the recalled Council Chairmen to diligently serve their people and shun all forms of lackadaisical behaviour in governance.

While charging the recalled Council Chairmen to tackle security challenges in their respective local government areas, Wike warned that any Chairman who continues to act in breach of extant laws would be shown the way out.

Operatives of the Anti Kidnapping Unit in a sting Operation on Wednesday rescued the four staff of NEMA, who were kidnapped on the 23rd of April along the East/West Road, Rivers State.

The victims who were rescued unconditionally have been debriefed and released to their waiting families. 2. In another development, Operatives of the IGP Monitoring Unit, Aluu at the wee hours of yesterday, stormed a kidnapping camp at Ozuoba.

The hoodlums on sighting the police, engaged them in a gunbattle and in a return fire, one Stephen Eze Matthew ‘m’ aka ‘Wenekanma’ a notorious armed robber/cultist and the gang leader of Dey-gbam group terrorizing Alakahia and Choba Communities was fatally wounded.

The police say a manhunt has been declared to arrest members of the gang who fled the scene.

In a similar operation at Eleme today, the IGP Monitoring Unit, while working on some clues, stormed a camp at Agboncha sand field forest, belonging to a notorious kidnapping kingpin, Amebe.

On their arrival, there were greeted with severe gunfire resulting in the death of the owner, Amebe, while two others were arrested.

Exhibit recovered include: one pump Action Gun and five live cartridges and some expended ones.

The war against armed banditry in the State is still raging and the command says it will stop at nothing until crimes become a thing of the past in the state.

A spokesman for the command, Omoni Nnamdi, enjoined the public to remain unwavering in their renewed commitment to support the police and make the State safe and secure.

The police in Rivers State have denied reports that forty-two persons and seven policemen were killed in the State and also that a corpse was hijacked at Ahoada LGA.

According to a statement by its spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, the command said the reports are baseless.

Omoni stated on Sunday the police more than ever, is poised to fight all manner of crimes and criminality in the State, not minding the unnecessary distractions.

He said the reports are false, unverifiable, unfounded, malicious, fake news and do not bear the true semblance of the situation in the State.

“They are but smear campaigns intended to lower the rising reputation and integrity of the Command and portray Officers and Men of the Command, as being docile, complacent and not living up to her requisite obligations,” he said.

He stressed that the Command under the watch of the Commissioner of Police, CP Usman .A. Belel is irrevocably committed to tackling crime and criminality headlong and nobody or group no matter how highly placed in the Society will be spared by the Command’s dragnet in this regard.

The spokesman also informed that the reports which he termed as spurious, are being investigated with a view to ascertaining their veracity and sources and unmasked the brains behind them.

“Anybody or group implicated either directed or indirectly in these acts of treachery will be dealt with in accordance with the Law,” Omoni said.

He advised the public to disregard and discountenance the reports, reiterating that they are fake and only exist in the imagination of their authors.

Omoni who issued the statement on behalf of the state’s Commissioner of Police noted that CP has appealed to the residents of the State to remain steadfast and trust in the police’s ability to protect them.

Gunmen Kidnap Two Oil Workers In Rivers

 

Two members of staff of an oil company have been kidnapped by gunmen in Rivers State, South-south Nigeria.

The victims were said to be on their way back from an official engagement in Bayelsa State when the assailants opened fire on their convoy, forcing them to stop along Rumuji axis in Rivers.

In the process, the driver of the escort vehicle was reportedly killed while the victims were dragged out of the car and taken to an unknown destination.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Saturday.

He said the Commissioner of Police in the state had mandated a tactical team of joint security agents to comb all the adjourning bushes in search of the kidnapped victims.

Omoni revealed that the team which was directed to stop at nothing to nab the kidnappers stumbled on two other persons earlier kidnapped and kept in the area.

He added that the operatives killed one of the kidnappers during the operation.

The command’s spokesman said the police were in pursuit of the hoodlums to rescue the kidnapped oil workers.
