Number three seed, Stan Wawrinka, has crashed out of the Madrid Open after he was defeated by world number 52, Benoit Paire 7-5 4-6 6-2.
Wawrinka becomes the first big-name casualty of the men’s tournament with Murray, Djokovic and Nadal all making it through to the third round.
Prior to tie, the pair had met a total of nine times with the Swiss world number three coming out tops on seven occasions, leaving the 28-year-old Frenchman with two previous wins.
Roger Federer will face Stan Wawrinka in an all-Swiss final at the BNP Paribas Open, after defeating Jack Sock 6-1, 7-6 in the second semi-final.
The 35-year-old Federer is through to his seventh final at the Indian Wells and is looking to win the title for the fifth time.
He takes a 19-3 ATP head2head rivalry lead, over Wawrinka into the final and has won their past three meetings, including a five-set battle in the Australian Open semi-finals in January.
