Senator Elisha Abbo has announced his defection from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Senator who is representing Adamawa North in the Senate announced his defection in a letter addressed to the House.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan read the letter during Wednesday’s plenary session.

In the letter, Senator Abbo explained that his decision to defect to the APC is because of the mismanagement of the PDP in Adamawa state by Governor Umaru Fintiri.

Senator Abbo has been in the news for assaulting a woman in an adult toy shop in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, earlier in September, awarded N50 million damages against Senator Abbo, to be paid as compensation to Osimibibra Warmate, a female attendant at a sex-toy shop, whom he assaulted.

Justice Samira Bature gave the order in her judgment on the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Warmate against the senator.

Earlier on July 3, 2019, the lawmaker was caught on camera physically assaulting a woman in Abuja, two months after he allegedly committed the act.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, Abuja has awarded N50 million damages against the Senator representing Adamawa North, Senator Elisha Abbo, to be paid as compensation to Osimibibra Warmate, a female attendant at a sex-toy shop, whom he assaulted.

Justice Samira Bature gave the order in her judgment on the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Warmate against the senator.

Premium Times had on July 3, 2019, reported how the lawmaker was caught on camera physically assaulting a woman in Abuja, two months after he allegedly committed the act.

In the video, Abbo was seen descending on the woman after she pleaded with him not to physically assault the shop owner whom the Senator had accused of insulting him. He said the shop owner called him a drunk.

Following the video which went viral, many Nigerians condemned the act, calling for the lawmaker’s arrest.

This however forced the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to order a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the purported assault of the victim by Senator Abbo.

On July 3, 2019, the IGP directed the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Ciroma to provide personal and round-the-clock supervision of every facet of the investigation including the forensic analysis of the video currently in circulation as well as the actions and inactions of the policeman seen in the video footage.

Also, the leadership of the Senate and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform under which the lawmaker was elected, both condemned the act and summoned the Senator.

Abbo Apologises, Begs For Forgiveness

After much criticism trailing his action, Senator Abbo publicly tendered an apology for his alleged assault.

The lawmaker, who spoke during a press conference on July 3 at the PDP headquarters in Abuja, begged for forgiveness.

He was close to tears at the briefing, saying it is not in his character to assault women.

Pleads Not Guilty

The police had on July 8 filed charges before a Magistrate Court in Zuba, Abuja with one count of assaulting Warmate.

Abbo however pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him.

The presiding Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, had dismissed the case after upholding the no-case submission filed by Senator Abbo.

The complainant, Warmate, through her legal team went on to sue Senator Abbo in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed before the FCT High Court.

A Zuba Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Senator Elisha Abbo, the lawmaker charged for allegedly assaulting a nursing mother.

The Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, adjourned the case when it was called on Monday, at the request of the prosecution counsel, Mr James Idachaba.

Mr Idachaba had informed the court that the lawmaker was earlier arraigned on preliminary investigation.

He also said the police needed to properly investigate the video, which allegedly showed the crime, being an electronically generated evidence.

The prosecution counsel prayed the court to grant him an adjournment to complete investigation in the matter and to enable him serve the counsel to the defendant all the materials he intended to rely on.

Counsel to Senator Abbo, Mr Adegbite Adeniyi, did not oppose the oral application made by the prosecution counsel.

He, however, prayed the court to direct the prosecution to ensure that all the evidence to be relied on in the course of the trial were served on the defence team before the next adjourned date.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ilelah granted the application for adjournment.

He also ordered the prosecution counsel to supply the defendant’s counsel with all the materials he intended to rely on in the course of the trial.

The case has been adjourned until August 20 for hearing.

Senator Abbo was arraigned before the magistrate on July 8, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail.

The court had subsequently adjourned the case until July 22.

Gunmen Kill Senator Abbo’s Uncle, Abduct His Stepmother

 

Armed men have killed Senator Elisha Ishaku Abbo’s uncle and abducted his stepmother during an attack on his house, the embattled lawmaker has said.

Abbo, who is being tried after a video of him assaulting a woman went viral, told reporters that the gunmen invaded his house in Mubi North Local Government of Adamawa State on Saturday.

He said, “Gunmen invaded my house this morning around 1:00 am. The people who entered my compound are about 13 in number, all carrying AK-47 rifles.”

The lawmaker added that the assailants abducted his stepmother who gave birth just less than two weeks ago.

He explained that in the course of the incident, his neighbours raised an alarm which prompted the attackers to fire gunshots into the air.

He added that in reaction to the alarm, his uncle came out of his house and he was shot dead.

The deceased has been buried and the fate of his stepmother remains uncertain.

Sex Toy Shop Assault: Senate Committee Insists On Continuing Investigation

 

The Senate adhoc committee investigating the allegation of assault against Senator Elisha Abbo has insisted on continuing its investigation, despite the matter being in court.

He is being investigated over a viral video in which he was seen physically assaulting a woman in a shop in Abuja.

The Senator on Tuesday appeared before the committee and a confrontation ensued between him and one of the committee members after he objected to being questioned in the presence of the media.

According to him, he only obliged the invitation of the committee out of respect, as the matter was already in court.

 

 

The committee eventually obliged the senator and went into a closed-door session.

Meanwhile, the victim was absent. She was, however, represented by her lawyers who stated that she was receiving medical treatment and they were not authorised to speak on the matter, as it would amount to subjudice.

Sex Toy Shop Assault: Court Grants Senator Abbo N5million Bail

Senator Elisha Abbo has been granted bail in the sum of N5million.

The Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District was granted bail on Monday by Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Ilellah.

This was after the lawmaker was arraigned by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police at Zuba Magistrate Court, Abuja.

He was granted bail in the sum of N5million and the sureties must have verifiable addresses within the Federal Capital Territory.

The case has since been adjourned to July 22nd for hearing.

Senator Elisha Abbo has been arraigned on one count of assault and has pleaded not guilty.

He was arraigned on Monday by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police at Zuba Magistrate Court, Abuja.

The senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District had earlier apologised to Nigerians, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and women in general, following a viral video in which he was seen physically assaulting a lady.

Adult Toy Shop Assault: Senator Elisha Abbo Granted Conditional Bail

Senator Elisha Abbo, the lawmaker representing Adamawa north, has been granted conditional bail by the Federal Capital Territory police command.

Senator Abbo was granted bail at about noon on Friday after meeting the conditions for his bail.

The police, however, did not disclose the specific terms of the bail.

The lawmaker had turned himself in on Thursday evening following an invitation by the police headquarters at the FCT, over the assault of a nursing mother at a sex toy shop in Abuja.

It also remains unclear if the lawmaker will be charged to court.

A video which went viral all over social media had shown the lawmaker hitting a lady following some misunderstanding at the adult toy store.

Protesters on Wednesday stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja demanding the prosecution of Senator Elisha Abbo for assaulting a lady at a sex toy shop.

The protesters including popular activist Aisha Yesufu said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, who is representing Adamawa North Senatorial District must be prosecuted alongside his police orderlies.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, condemning the act assault and demanding justice.

The Nigerian Senate has set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate allegations of assault against Senator Elisha Abbo.

Six men and two women have been chosen as members of the committee which will be headed by Senator Sam Egwu.

Senators Stella Oduah and Oluremi Tinubu are the women in the committee that have been given two weeks to conclude it’s investigations.

The matter was raised as a point of order by Senator Uba Sani.
