Police Parades 30 Suspects, Recovers 10 Vehicles In Ogun

policeAs part of its renewed onslaught against criminals in Ogun state, south-west Nigeria, the Ogun State Police Command has arrested about 30 suspected criminals across the state, including a four-man gang of armed bandits which specialise in snatching vehicles in the state and neighboring states.

Parading the suspects at the state headquarters of the Police Force, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Muyiwa Adejobi said the arrest was made possible with useful information from members of the general public.

Among the arrested suspects are 16 suspected cultists and armed robbers.

The items recovered from them included guns, flat screen TV, arms and ammunition, ten vehicles and fabricated master keys being used by the suspects.

The PPRO informed the public that the command would not relent on the latest determination to reduce crime and criminal tendencies to the barest minimum in the state.

The suspects confessed to the crime as a 34-year-old car dealer claimed to buy the cars between 200,000 and 250,000 naira.

The command has however appealed to members of the general public whose car were stolen to approach the command with prove of evidence and claim their vehicles.

Osun Stakeholders Hold Summit To Improve Financial Downturn

osunThe Osun Stakeholders Summit was held in Ile-Ife, Osun State south-west Nigeria on Saturday.

The submit was held to share ideas on how to improve the current financial downturn in the country.


Speakers at the Summit all agreed that in spite of the financial crisis of the nation, governors can create corridors of prosperity with the resources at their disposal.

They were of the view that the economy could be enhanced if the nation’s constitution is restructured to allow the states to go under their soil and generate wealth with the resources instead of dependence on federal allocation.

The summit also agreed that the culture of integrity, accountability and transparency must be given its rightful position ‎if frivolity in governance is to be curbed.

The speakers also said that the government needs to accord the civil service its rights rather than use consultants to carry out what they term as “shady deals” to cover tracks of misappropriation and fraud.

Unpaid Salaries: Osun Workers To Resume Strike

osun strikeLabour leaders in Osun State, South-west Nigeria, have resolved to continue with the on-going industrial action until the state government fulfills all the points raised in the agreement reached in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed with the workers on payment of the two months salaries.

Speaking on the position of the union after hours of meeting, the state Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Bayo Adejumo, maintained that workers will not return to work until the full payment of January and February salary is implemented.

The labour leaders said they have reached a decision on the way forward for the Osun workforce and have also taken a position on what they termed as “breach of agreement” on the state governments part having signed a Memorandum of Understanding with government to offset two out of the seven months unpaid salaries.

It is said that the decision on who to read the resolution of the labour leaders became a difficulty before the Chairman of the JNC read it out, and was silent on whether the strike continues or is suspended.

Earlier this month, there was an agreement between the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Osun State Government as the 6-weeks strike embarked upon had been suspended.

The Chairman of the Union, Jacob Adekomi, said that the Union agreed to suspend the strike as government has fulfilled its part by paying the two months arrears.

12 Students Die In Auto Crash In Ogun

Ogun-StateAbout 12 persons suspected to be students of the Ogun State owned Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, have been reported killed when a container crush a fully loaded bus.

It was gathered that the incident occurred along Sagamu/Benin expressway near Ilishan Remo North Local Government of Ogun State in south-west Nigeria.

According to the commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Tommy Hamzat, the truck driver, who was driving against the traffic, lost control and collided with a bus heading towards Lagos and killed all 12 occupants including the bus driver.

Report has it that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of the Olabisi Onabanjo university Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

A spokesman for the police, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, also confirmed the incident.

The company made the declaration during its 45th Annual General Meeting held in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, south-west Nigeria, AIICO reviewed its 2014 Fiscal Annual Report and Financial Statements, where effort were intensified towards ensuring quick service delivery and profit on investment for its shareholders..

The General Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AIICO, Edwin Igbiti, explained that no dividend was declared by the company for the 2014 financial year.

He stressed further that AIICO was able to grow shareholders’ funds by 11% from 10.3 billion Naira in 2013 to 11.5 billion Naira in 2014, retaining earnings of 275 million Naira from negative retained earnings of One billion Naira in 2013.

Some of the shareholders, Sunny Nwosu, and Okesia Boniface, shared their expectations for the insurance company.

They noted that it had become the indisputable leader in all markets in its key business lines in life assurance and annuity, general insurance and special risks, pension management, asset management amongst other services.

The shareholders also commended the management of the insurance company for improving the financial strength despite the challenges in the operating environment in the 2014 financial year.

The Chairman of AIICO, Mr Oladele Fajemirokun, however, promised that the company would sustain the momentum for profits and market leadership, by becoming a truly world class financial services group and economic powerhouse.

The meeting also adopted the re-election of directors and the reappointment of three members of the audit committee.

The event was rounded off with a birthday song for the Chairman of the company who clocked 65 years.

AJimobi Launches Waste To Energy Project In OyoThe Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has launched an energy project to produce at least five megawatts of electricity through waste.

This development, according to the State Governor, was in line with his administration’s strategy to complement electricity generation and distribution in Oyo State in south-west Nigeria.

Governor Ajimobi made this known on Saturday during the ground breaking ceremony for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) driven Waste to Energy Project at the Ajakanga landfill in Oluyole Local Government of the state.

He said the project was aimed at sustaining the environment and virile economy amidst global challenges.

The Governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to turning the idle dump site to an economically viable entity.

He also stressed that it would address other socio-economic and welfare needs of the people such as education, health and also enhance the environmental transformation programme of the State government.

Governor Ajimobi assured residents living around the largest dump site of stable power supply, job creation and economic exposure among other numerous benefits of the PPP.

On further benefits of the project, the General Manager, Ibadan Solid Waste Management Authority, Engineer Joseph Alabi, explained that the money spent in maintaining the site could now be diverted to other needy areas.

Governor Ajimobi added that the initiative would serve as a prototype, as he planned to replicate the project across the numerous dump sites of the government in the state.

Police Arrest Six Suspected Fraudsters In OyoThe Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspected fraudsters who duped a number of people the sum of 800 Million Naira.

With the establishment of the new Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Oyo State, south-west Nigeria, the latest conquest was the discovery of a one stop centre for all manners of crime.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, told reporters on Saturday that his specially trained squads would continue to ravage the underworld to rid Oyo State of criminals.

He also vowed that the onslaught against criminals and men of the underworld in Oyo State would not relent in anyway.

The police made the arrest at a trado-medical clinic at Bopa area of Oleyo in Oluyole Local Government Area.

At the said clinic, unsuspecting patients were lured into the frightening world of the syndicate of six con artistes led by a former Fuji Artist popularly known as Fuji Santana in his musical days.

Fuji Santana, whose real name is Akeem Olayode, lures terminally ill people from various sources to their dreadful shrine in the dense forest.

He promises them healing and longevity in exchange for huge sums of money ranging from 15 – 50 million Naira.

The suspected fraudster was not ashamed of his achievement from his career of over six years which include three state of the art cars and two poultry farms worth about 15 million and 100 million Naira respectively.

The people of the nearby villages expressed joy at the breakthrough, revealing that they had been living in perpetual fear and that the village heads had been of no help.

The arrest was the 4th of its kind in two Local Government Areas of Oyo State since February, in rare breakthrough recorded as a result of the Oyo State Police Command’s commitment to ending the activities of criminals in the state.

Ogun Customs Impound 90 Sacks Of Indian Hemp

customs impound bags of cannabisThe Ogun State Customs Command says it has intercepted and seized 359 parcels of substance believed to be cannabis sativa (indian hemp), stocked into 90 sacks with duty value of over nine million naira along the Imeko border town of Ogun State, south-west Nigeria.

Handing over the substance to its National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) counterpart, the Ogun State Area Comptroller of Customs, Haruna Mahmud, reiterated the commitment of the command in its anti-smuggling drive, in order to reduce smuggling activities to the barest minimum.

While sounding a note of warning to smugglers along the Ogun border posts, the Area Comptroller asked for more synergy and cooperation among security agencies in combating crime in the state.

In its revenue generation drive, Mr Mahmud said that over two billion naira has been generated in the first four months of the 2015 fiscal year, while 361 seizures with duty paid value of over 300 million naira was recorded by the command.

Fuel Scarcity Bites Harder On Abeokuta Residents

FuelThe persistent fuel scarcity in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, South-west Nigeria has continued to take its toll on the residents.

Channels TV crew who visited several petrol stations in Abeokuta, gathered that about 95% of the filling stations in the metropolis had no supply of fuel, adding that there were long queues where the product was said to be available.

There were unconfirmed claims of the commodity being hoarded by some marketers and exploitation of residents who have to buy the commodity at exorbitant rates, far above the official pump price, as a result of this ugly development.

However, there were fewer vehicles on the road with many residents stranded at bus stops across the state capital, leaving the people desperate and frustrated.

They are also demanding explanations from relevant authorities concerned, as their means of living depend on this essential commodity.

Ogun Legislators Promise Good Leadership At State And National Levels

OgunOgun State members of the 8th legislature at both state and national levels have pledged their commitment towards effective legislation to give better and new direction to governance in the state.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, made the promise on behalf of both returning members and members-elect, in response to the advice contained in papers presented at a seminar held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital in South-West Nigeria.

He promised that the lawmakers would provide the much needed leadership and legislation as well as better representation for the good of all.

The seminar was organised for returning and newly elected members of the Ogun State House of Assembly and members of the National Assembly of Ogun State extraction, having secured victories at the polls.

The 26 members of the 8th legislature of the Ogun Assembly and those of the National Assembly were groomed at the seminar with the requisite knowledge in the act of legislature with emphasis on the need to work as a team towards one goal – the progress and the development of Nigeria and Ogun State in particular.

There were lectures on the law making process, legislature and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria with the call on the third arm of government to legislate for good governance and provide effective checks and balances.

Different speakers also challenged them on the fight against corruption and the need to address the cost of running government.

Osun State Government Partners With NGO To Train Teachers

teachers_NTIThe government of Osun State, South-west Nigeria in partnership with a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Charles Bebeye Ndiomu Foundation, have setup an initiative to train school teachers for effective education in the state.

The trainees, who were 40 in number, were selected from different public junior secondary schools of the three Senatorial Districts across the state.

According to the Osun State Deputy Governor, Titilayo Laoye-Tomori ‎and other speakers at the workshop tagged ‘Train the Trainer Initiative’ in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the training was setup to revamp the education sector by equipping teachers, particularly from public schools, with adequate and efficient knowledge and skill for better performance in classroom management.

A Technical Consultant, Ani Bassey -Eyo , and another Consultant, Ifeoma Udong, were speakers at the workshop.

They stressed that the education sector required a total overhaul for better performance of the students, stressing that private firms and NGOs could partner with the government to help rehabilitate teachers for productivity that would be beneficial to the society.

The State Deputy Governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Education, Lawrence Oyeniran, ‎said investing in education had always been on the top of the government’s list, hence the partnership with the Foundation to assist in retraining the teachers, to increase student’s performance and decrease teacher anxiety.

Some participants at the workshop, Abidemi Adeoye and Tunde Abolarinwa, said they now have more classroom management tips to facilitate better teaching and learning for all parties.

However, with the necessary skills for managing classroom activities and accommodating individual needs of the students, there would be a major improvement in the performance of the students in all ramifications.

Real Madrid Beat Atlético To Qualify For UCL Semi-final

Real Madrid-UCLSpanish giants, Real Madrid FC have qualified for the semi-final round of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), after securing a 1-0 victory over city rival Atlético Madrid on Wednesday.

Javier Hernández right-footed a shot from the centre of the box to secure the victory for The Whites, following an assist by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid forward scored in the 88 minute of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, after a goalless draw at Atlético Madrid’s Vicente Calderón Stadium.

Hernández had earlier fired shots from the right side of the box in the 11th and 12th minutes of the game, but missed to the right.

Ronaldo also lost an attempt in the 13th minute, after a left footed shot from outside the box.

Tiago Mendes’ (Atlético Madrid) header from the centre of the box in the 61st minute was also blocked, as several fouls were committed by both teams.

Italian side Juventus, also held Monaco to a goalless draw at the French side’s Stade Louis II, which  helped Juventus qualify for the semi-final round of the League.

The quest for the champion continues as both teams would be paired alongside Barcelona and Bayern Munich who won 2-0, 6-1 respectively on Tuesday to qualify for the semi-final round of the UCL.
