SGF Appears Before Senate Committee To Defend Budget

Babachir LawalThe Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has presented a budget of 9.88 billion naira for his office in 2017.

Mr Babachir Lawal appeared before the Senate committee on Federal Character to defend the budget of his office.

He told Senators that the proposed 400 million Naira is for the purchase of vehicles for former Presidents, since they were all due for change of vehicles usually procured at the end of four years.

According to Mr Lawal, his office also budgeted 2.69 billion naira for capital projects for the year 2017, just as he lamented that funds appropriated to the office of the SGF in the 2016 budget, was grossly inadequate to meet some of the responsibilities of the office.

Nigerian Army To Begin ‘Operation Rescue Finale’ In Northeast

Tukur Buratai Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General on Operation Rescue FinaleThe Nigerian Army says it is set to commence and execute another operation in the northeast nicknamed ‘Operation Rescue Finale’ aimed at rescuing persons still held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, announced the plan on Monday in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Chief of Army Staff Conference.

He says Operation Rescue Finale is a consolidation on the stabilisation phase of operations already executed in the area.

The Chief of Army Staff expressed the belief that a well planned and executed Operation Rescue Finale would bring about decisive elimination of the Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria’s northeast.

He said that even though the Nigerian army in the preceding quarters of the year 2016 faced daunting challenges, the Nigerian Army in its resolve would continue to discharge its constitutional roles towards ensuring peace and stability in the country as well defend the nation’s democracy and its territorial integrity.

The conference, holding at the Imo trade and investment Centre, was declared open by a representative of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

It has as its theme: “Consolidating on the gains of counter insurgency operations towards achieving national security”.

Mr Lawal assured Nigerians that with the renewed vigour and commitment of the Nigerian Army, terrorism and insurgency would soon become a thing of the past

Meanwhile, the governor of the state, Mr Rochas Okorocha, commended the Nigerian Army for the sacrifice and commitment to the protection of lives and property of all Nigerians and the protection of the Nation’s unity.

With the speech of the Army Chief, hopes were raised that the Operation Rescue Finale by the Nigerian Army would give hope to families of the Chibok girls and other families whose children might still be held captive by the Boko Haram terrorists.

The Nigerian Army says the choice of the southeast to hold this year’s conference is in consonance with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff to move the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army to dialogue with all regions of the country with a view to finding security solutions peculiar to the people.

It is also expected to x-ray the Operation Python Dance recently launched in the southeast with a view to make the Yuletide a pleasant one.

Buhari’s Appointments Are Based On Merit – Oshiomhole

Adams-OshiomholeThe Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent appointments of his Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Comptroller General of Customs and Presidential Liaison Officers to the National Assembly.

According to the Edo State Governor, “the appointments were based on merit and not political sentiments or ethnic consideration, as some tribal jingoists would have us believe”.

Sanitise The System

The Governor, in a statement by his spokesman, Peter Okhiria, said that Nigeria as a nation had come to a point where the best hands needed to confront the peculiarity of the problems.

“It is not all the time we descend to the level of geopolitical balancing; we need to employ unusual methods to solve an unusual problem.

“The level of decay in the country at present requires very seasoned hands and incorruptible Nigerians that would help to translate the APC agenda of change for the benefit of all Nigerians. We must not reduce governance to political patronage of bread and butter,” Governor Oshiomhole stressed.

The Governor also congratulated the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Comptroller General of Customs, all of whom he had very close relationship with and whose credentials he said stood tall among their compeers.

Governor Oshiomhole wished them well in their new jobs of helping to sanitise the system.

He also suggested that rather than condemning the President for taking bold steps, he should be commended for having the uncommon courage to take plausible decisions in the appointments he has made so far, as he settles down for the real task of governance.

He said: “If we must make a huge difference in the lives of Nigerians, things must be done differently. We cannot continue to apply same template in the recruitment of persons and expect different results”.

The appointed officials have been sworn in on Monday by President Buhari.
