Prior to the recent agitations for secession by some ethnic groups in Nigeria, late elder statesman and politician Maitama Sule had shared his dream of an inseparable Nigeria.

Maitama Sule died Monday in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt’s capital while receiving treatment for an illness.

Speaking at a gathering of Northern leaders in 2014 in the heat of the Boko Haram insurgency, the elder statesman had called on Nigerians to embrace unity for the country to take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

“I have a dream not only for the North but for the entire country, Nigeria. I have a dream that Nigeria will be truly united one day.

“I have a dream that Nigeria will have a buoyant, a strong economy. I have a dream that Nigeria will have a political cloud that will enable her to lead the rest of Africa and the blacks all over the world.

“I have a dream that Nigeria will take her proper place in the comity of nations and will be one of the leading nations of the world.

“By the grace of God we will see the end of all the crises in Nigeria, by the grace of God we will come to know peace and stability in Nigeria,” he said.

Maitama Sule was also known for his popular quotes, one of which reads: “Everyone has a gift from God. The Northerners are endowed by God with leadership qualities. The Yoruba man knows how to earn a living and has diplomatic qualities. The Igbo man is gifted in trade, commerce, and technological innovation. God so created us equally with purpose and different gifts”.
