Dumping hundreds of bodies in the Southern Philipines where hurricane washi claimed lives totalling 1000 became a major problem in the heavily hit Cayagan De Oro and Iligan as there no funeral parlours or morgue to take in the bodies.

As of Saturday the morgue and funeral parlours were filled to a point where admittance was being rejected and more bodies were being discovered by the day since on Saturday.

Government data revealed more than 957 bodies have been recovered in different parts of Mindanao Island, while 47 remain missing.

Sacks and plastice bags was the last resort for every corpse discovered as there were shortage of morticians, formalin and coffins.

Rescuers had no choice but to dump the remaining corpses in city landfills along with the accumulated garbage from the typhoon, although relatives of the dead were not happy with the recent development.

Cagayan De Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano said they had to dump the bodies in the landfills as the number of decomposing bodies can no longer be supported by the morgues.

A mass burial is being planned by the local government so to prevent health issues over unclaimed bodies.

The Philippine Navy will also send 400 more coffins from Manila to help with the burial of the bodies.

Typhoon Washi slammed Mindanao Island while people slept late on Friday and early Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare.
