The Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi

Reactions have been trailing the suspension of the Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi and one of those is from the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) condemning the suspension of the governor by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

Mr Amaechi, whose re-election as the Nigeria Governors Forum Chairman generated a split in loyalty amongst the governors of the States as it was claimed by a faction of the Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang that the elections was rigged, was suspended by the PDP National Working Committee for violating the party’s constitution article 58 1 B, C, H and M after an emergency meeting which was held in Abuja.

In press statement released by the ANNP’s National Publicity Secretary, Emma Eneukwu the party described the suspension of Mr Amaechi by the PDP as a colossal affront on democracy and a dagger in the soul of its practices.

The party said what can be seen as a crime that the governor has committed to warrant his suspension from the party is because he won the National Governors Forum election by 19 to 16 votes scored by his closest contestant which to the ANNP does not cut across as a crime.

The party stated that even though the decision of the PDP and their internal dimension is being respected, they are constrained to react, going by the wider implications of the Nigeria’s democratic practice as committed democrats, thereby wondering how a political party that lays claim to democratic usages could rise to suspend one of its own for winning an election.

The statement said further that the action rubbishes PDP’s claim to any democratic credential, as it has clearly shown that it practices despotism and the tyranny of a cabal and it is worrying at the dangerous development, asking  Nigerians to take due notice of this charade and place it in perspective in view of the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

The ANPP claimed that they are alarmed at the unwholesome development and urge all lovers of democracy to remain vigilant and join them in their resolve to resist this burgeoning cankerworm.
