Mr Afolabi Imokhuede, an education consultant has said that vocational training is not the duty of universities.

He also blamed the society for making young people feel they cant succeed without a university degree.

He added that most of our graduates don’t even know how to write their own curriculum vitae, he regarded this as a shame to our education system.

He said this on Wednesday, on Channels Television’s morning breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, where he came as a guest.

Mr Imokhuede said “the issue with technical colleges is that they have outdated curriculum, dilapidated equipment, they lack fund and they have issues of neglect. A lot of graduates are not fit for work; productivity is a function of skill which most of them lack”.

When asked about the ASUU strike he said that the government does not seem to understand that education is the bedrock of development and to show understanding they have to decompose the entire education system.

He added that the president of the country was once a lecturer and the minister of education is a professor, so they know the problems in the education system. “All educational institutions should be made to stand on their own, we’ve got to come to a realistic plain field. How will funds be generated if universities do not have autonomy, the quality of output cannot improve unless we deal with the issues we have on ground”.

Mr Imokhuede stated that Nigeria has a mindset problem, he said Nigerians are one of the greatest entrepreneurs in the world and graduates have to start setting up enterprises.

He concluded by saying that most universities don’t have the fund to perform research that will improve learning for students, and this shouldn’t be a problem for us at this stage.
