The Federal Government has advised persons living in rural communities to desist from acts of open defecation, saying it is largely responsible for the outbreak and spread of cholera.

Speaking in Abuja at the 2013 Annual Physicians’ Week organised by the Nigerian Medical Association, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu decried the number of deaths recorded through cholera as 74 persons have so far been confirmed dead, out of 333 cases reported.

Professor Chukwu appealed to states and local government authorities to scale up their sensitization campaign in order to arrest the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases.
