25 persons have been confirmed dead and dozens injured after a stampede occurred at an over one hundred thousand crowded All Night Vigil crusade at Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The state governor, who visited the scene of the incident alongside the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 9, Philemon Leha, Assistant Inspector General of Police of C Department, Kachi Udeoji, and the state commissioner of police, Bala Nasarawa, vowed to unravel the cause of the incident. They stressed that whoever was the brain behind the incident would not go unpunished.

The vigil was a special one, as November 1 was All Saints Day in the church calendar and that accounted for the over one hundred thousand faithful that gathered.

The governor, who attended the vigil with the governorship candidate, Willie Obiano, the National chairman of APGA, Victor Umeh and others had left at 3:30am shortly before the close of the service at 5:08am when the incident happened.

According to various eyewitness accounts, the stampede was caused by the overcrowded church ground. Others said shouts of fire outbreak threw confusion amongst the people who reacted and scampered for safety.
