Neighbouring Countries’ Cooperation Can Checkmate Boko Haram – Governor Ahmed

The governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has stressed the need for cooperation between neighbouring countries of Nigeria – Cameroon, Chad and Niger – as part of strategies to checkmate the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east.

Supporting the Borno State Governor’s claims that ‘the Nigerian military is incapable of crushing the insurgents’; Governor Ahmed urged the state Police Command to strengthen security operations at the state’s border towns to forestall infiltration into the state by criminals,

In a meeting with the new Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Ambrose Aisabo on Friday, the governor pointed out that other countries prone to the activities of the insurgents were not as hard-working as Nigeria in tackling the problems.

“The operation of insurgent groups transcends the shores of the nation and security operatives must explore the possibilities of cutting off sources of the insurgents as a way of halting the menace,” he said.

The governor of Kwara also emphasised that Nigerians needed to appreciate that national security, threatened by insurgents in the northern-eastern part of the country, was beyond religious interpretation.

“It is a systematic foisting of an ideological perspective on the country,” Governor Ahmed said.

Mr Aisabo described his posting to Kwara State as a routine, devoid of political undertones, promising that he would work within the ambit of the constitution and police regulation to ensure security in the state.
