lasuThe Lagos State government has approved a 34-60% reduction in school fees of the Lagos State University (LASU) in a bid to end the protest of the new fees by the students.

Briefing journalists on the recommendations of the ad-hoc committee on LASU fees in Lagos on Wednesday, the special adviser to the governor on education, Mr Fatai Olukoga, said the reduction are on the grounds that some of the fee components should not have been applied across board and certain charges could be reduced on compassionate grounds.

Academic activities in the school had been grounded for days due to protest by students over fees hike. They had demanded that the state government should reduce the fees.

Representatives of the State University Students Union had submitted an open letter to the government during a meeting between the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, and the Union.

Mr Olukoga, stated that the government would remain committed to the development of the State University and would continue to deploy resources at its disposal towards the provision of a conducive learning environment with up-to-date facilities.

The government accepted that the fees and charges payable by students for incidental services and material are amenable to a downward review because some of the fee component had been applied to students across all level when in fact they can be justifiably limited to students at a particular level only and because some of the charges included could still be reduced on compassionate grounds.

The government, however, pointed out that in LASU, the budget for recurrent and capital expenditure of about 10 billion Naira for 2014 was partially funded from fees amounting to only about 10 per cent while the government provided the remaining 90 per cent.

It is expected that with the fees reduction academic activities will commence in full.
