Edo-Lawmakers-FightResidents of Benin City are lamenting ‎the discomfort they are experiencing as they now have to walk longer distances due to blocked major routes by the Police to guard against possible violence that may result from the crisis in the State House of Assembly.

The Police have cordoned-off major and minor roads around the Assembly Complex resulting in heavy vehicular traffic which makes residents complete their journey on foot.

Some residents, who spoke with Channels Television, called on the warring parties to embrace peace, lamenting that they are the worst hit in the crisis.

The crisis in the House began when majority of the lawmakers suspended four Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers, including the deputy speaker of the House, Festus Ebea on allegations of misconduct and misdemeanour .

After the suspension, four of the suspended lawmakers and five others held a session and passed a motion suspending the  speaker of the House and few other members of the House, insisting that they had been suspended without an offence..

The speaker of the House further secured a court order restraining they four suspended members of the State House of Assembly from the premises of the House of Assembly.

On July 2, the House impeached the Deputy Speaker of the House citing same allegations of misconduct and misdemeanour and elected Victor Edoror to replace him.

This act thickened the on-going crisis which began over a month ago.

Prior to their suspension, the suspended lawmakers had decamped from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party. There were talks that the Deputy Speaker, Ebea was also making plans to decamp to the PDP.
